or one of your kids does.

back when I first got started in this sport I was oblivious but I have learned a few things.

This is personal experience and how I handle things with what I know now.

If you go to the ER and say you got hurt in a dirtbike crash, that is what is reported to you insurance company. They will of course cover you but will also look to hold someone else liable to recoup their cost.  This 100% happened to me when my son made his first trip to the ER.  The insurance company called and said we see there was an accident, we are looking to see if anyone else can be held liable.  I told them the hospital reported it wrong it was a bicycle crash and no-one else was involved. Luckily they didn't press any further than that.

so now when we have to visit the ER (now called the ED) these are the steps I take

1. Remove all gear that i can without risking further injury.  get back into street clothes if you can.

2. Be vague in when answering questions. Do not disclose the name of the track spare the details abut how you were jumping 50ft in the air etc.

3. Get out as fast as you can.

Obviously get the care you need but don't be in there spilling the beans and risking the track getting shut down over it.

That is all.

Ready, set, fight

i get taken to hospital,  the nationwide mandatory Accident Compensation Corporation system pays for the ambo or helicopter, and all health care , and after a one week stand down, 80% of my income is paid to me till i am able to work again,  (or in my case as a business owner, the amount i insure and pay for is paid to me)  (the standown is usually paid for by the sick days which you have (10 days a year)

we don't have insurance issues closing down tracks here,

if you accept ACC payments, you can not sue for personal injury,  police however can prosecute promotors and clubs under health and safety law,

we also dont have ad's for personal injury lawyers on bill boards,

this sort of freedom really sucks. Wink

Side pipe the insurance co is still calling in a few days. Get all that answer the phone on the same page. The investors etc get paid Big money . There report states injury on Mx bike changed story to bicycle injury.  Then we never seen a bicycle injury of this magnitude. Where recording the conversation it’s a felony etc to lie.  They live in huge houses & drive 200k cars ok. They’ll pull up data on bicycle crashes & say that’s impossible.  Say you threw the bike out. If any neighbor has a camera don’t say you threw it out at your house. Get Mx bike looking non crashed. Cover everything or it’s pay the 190,000 bill

If you mess up your acl just remember it was a soccer accident at a public park. You just stuck your leg out wrong. Guess it's a common injury for that sport.

I've used "Riding my bicycle" twice...., "I was trying to keep up with the kids" It worked flawless. No questions asked.

Tough to get out of it if you're in gear but we've definitely used the crashed a pedal bike or skateboard excuse for many collar bones. Gotta love the American health care system... 🙄

It’s not the healthcare system that’s causing this particular problem. They do cause lots of other ones though. Its the greedy insurance companies who take your premiums with a big fat smile, stuff it in their pockets, then do everything they can to not pay when they should. Biggest scam in human history and we all pay it because we’re forced too. And yes I’ve used the old “fell off a ladder at home” excuse myself. Not proud of it. I’m generally an upstanding honest guy but just like everything else these days you just get bent over for it.

“I got hurt when I fell off my bike (don’t specify which type of bike) and nobody else was involved.” I’ve reported that same story the last 2 times I ended up in the ER (once by helicopter, once by ambulance) and nobody ever pried for more info.  Doctors don’t fill out reports mentioning that they cut riding gear off you.  The big thing they want to know is if anyone else was involved.  Both times I was racing, but I would NEVER mention the “R” word to an insurance company.

I have had a lot of bicycle and ladder mishaps.  My doctor told me last time to stay off ladders.

We use Spot Insurance for BMX. They cover 100% and I don't have to develop a story as to why I got hurt. I broke my femur 1.5 years ago and they covered the surgery and all of the PT to get me back to normal.

I always make them hurt themselves riding the dirt bike in the cow pasture.  My insurance also mentions "competition events"  Even though you are only practicing at the mx track I don't want to have to explain the difference to people that don't know shit later and only look for an excuse to not pay.

It pisses me off with the amount of time I have to spend on the phone/online making sure the insurance company pays their part.  I should get discount for all the wasted time them fucks cause me.

When you get to the ER, tell them you fell off a horse, Poor horse, we had to put the him  down from the accident.    Oh yeah,  don't forget to have taken your riding gear off

1. Blame the track for being too difficult or dangerous
2. Call your daddy so he can call the lawyer

Oh I forgot, take off your Eks Brand googles so you can wipe your tears.

Yes especially considering most tracks have an ambulance on site and transport people to the hospital from the track quite a few times per year.

You make a good point. Chances are if you are getting a ride to a hospital via ambulance, you arent gonna be able to change out of your clothes. Title of this article may be worded wrong too. If you wad yourself up at a track, you definitely arent changing into your street clothes before entering the hospital or er

It depends on what policy you have selected, but I pay 26$ a month and am covered 100% up to at least the first 20,000$. I also have regular health insurance through my work, so Spot is supplemental.

I found out about it when I was out west working at ski areas. A lot of ski bums dont have health insurance, or even a job for that matter. They buy this policy instead because it is specifically for injuries sustained while recreating

USA BMX Annual | Spot Insurance

This is what we have, but they may also have one for AMA, or another sanctioning body.

Yeah Im not sure if its sport specific or not but I initially got it because of snowboarding, and figured it was worth holding onto because of motocross. Ive heard of people straight up not having insurance at all and the bill being covered 100% for broken legs or collar bones.

Im not sure what happens if its a compound and/or sugery is required

Rule 1 that I've taught since he learned to ride: If you can move, get off the track. Getting landed on will kill you. We've been there when that's happened and it is horrifying.

Rule 2 is spend the $$$ on a LIfe Flight membership. Every year.

Public OHV area is our go-to if there's no ambulance involved. It's sadly funny that now, after 12 years of my son racing, one of our first conversations once we know it's not a really big injury with an ambulance ride, is "how did this one happen and where?". Usually held while I am driving him to the Urgent Care clinic or ER. We've gone home and changed too - broken collarbone that he was fine dealing with for a couple hours.

Other thought - when he was young, say up to 11 or 12, he was a wuss and every crash was drama. Now, even in the big ones, he's calm, cool, and collected and knows what's wrong by the time I get to him. "Dad, my arm's broken. Not bad so no ambulance please. I can walk to the truck." He's definitely gotten tougher.

If I crash really hard I like to scream a little bit. Sometime its anger, sometimes its pain. Really adds some flair.

I tore my ACL, MCL, PCL, with tibial plateau fractures "playing basketball". Doc said it was the worst basketball knee injury he'd ever seen. 😄

Wait til insurance companies are using AI to scrape your phone and vehicle location data to determine where you were prior to arriving at the ER to determine if they need to pay or sue.

I'm a little like your son. When I have a bad injury, I get really calm and quiet. I once told the EMT exactly what was wrong (dislocated shoulder,) and asked him to help me pop it back in. He said, "Hell no! I'm only here to get you to the hospital!" Wussy.

They are already using AI to deny claims....

Ask United CEO how that's going...
