Have you ever injured your shoulder or collarbone while using old-style armor with suspended shoulder (hrp, and other vintage's)?

I broke my collar bone at Red Bud with one on. But it was going through the ruts wide open on my 125 in 4th.  It was after you came down the dropoff after start and when it used to go straight.  1997 I think, It was a great way to spend my July 4th weekend, in the hospital, not.  Made it a whole 1/1000 of a lap. Lol. I still trusted it enough to continue wearing one throughout my racing.  I guess I just found the limit of it's protection. I never felt comfortable without it on, even after that. I also wore the neck donut.

The Thor protector didn’t hv suspended web shoulders like the HRP chest protector now. And the only one sold or available.  Get the bicep protector that snaps to the chest protector.  It keeps in place better.  Actually my hrp stays in place with out them. I didn’t install them yet. But it would help. I  hv a 98 fox also it’s heavier & moves around a little since I cut the arm protectors off.  You won’t notice the HRP on , Very light too. I didn’t get the donut. I bought both kidney belts too.  The bright blue bio foam is sharp & has the best feel & protection of any 1 ever made. You feel better with it on & you can move easily yet.  There discounted So cal jerseys r Very sharp, 20 bucks. I bought a pair of So Cal pants too with HRP big vinal on the back of the legs, real sharp . But 34 or 36 I swim in them.  Very nice gal ordering Carrol I think was her name.

Thor was or is crap. Get the HRP flak jack 200 I think the model is . Add bicep protectors that snap to Chest protector.  When you get it you’ll wish you order 2 just in case your Large model is out of stock, etc

I wore an HRP for many years. No shoulder injuries. Just lucky maybe.

A lot of collar bone breaks are from putting your arms out and hitting the ground with them raised up. No armour protects from that. I broke both of mine with an HRP on.

If you fall on your shoulder with your full body weight, will it protect you? What do you think? How effective is it compare modern ce level 2 protectors like leatt 6.5 and other high end ones? Peoples told me that the suspended protector doesnt help you and the modern stuffs are much better.

" A lot of collar bone breaks are from putting your arms out and hitting the ground with them raised up."

But is there a method to avoid it like no raising your arms or something?

In my opinion, too many variables during the crash to say one is better then the other. One thing I like about the newer stuff is it fits better and doesn’t move around as much so there is a better chance of it being in the right spot when you do hit the ground. It’s not fully dissipating the energy of the fall with anything more then a tip over though. If you are that concerned with preventing injury, football or hockey gear are probably the best option.

Raising your arms to break a fall is pretty much a reflex for most people. Not that easy to tell yourself to keep your arms in and tuck and roll while flying through the air.

Never broke a collar bone or hurt my shoulders. Probably lucky like wreckitrandy said.

My HRP Flak Jak I got for my 16th birthday in 86. And the upgrade I made in 2003. You get used to wearing shoulder pads and you feel vulnerable when you don't.

When a guy used my upper arm for a berm once and ripped the upper arm guard off, I took the opposite side off so I didn't look like a goof and I decided I liked the freedom of mobility. So that was the first thing i did when i got the MSR's.

Bring back suspended shoulder cups / external body armour.

They look cool to.

This, collarbone injuries rarely happen from direct impact to the actual bone IMO.

Never with the suspended cups (Fox Roost 2).  When AXO released the Pentagon, I switched to that and proceeded to break 3 times.

I broke my collar bone and scaphoid (shoulder blade) in two separate crashes wearing my 00's No Fear chest protector. Also the only bones I've broken this far. Replaced it with current Leatt, much more comfortable. No shoulder injuries to report since but, like others said, a lot of variables.

I broke my collarbone in '88 wearing a Fox Roost2 (netted shoulders like HRP). I never wore that style of protector again after that. It never fit right or stayed put so it was kind of a good riddance thing once I realized it was adding nothing protection-wise.

I don't buy into the idea that bigger/bulkier is necessarily better for protective gear. There are reasons football players don't still wear the comically huge pads that they did in the '80s.

Thank you so much for the answers! I readed many different opinions about the suspended shoulder protection, so ig the best i can do is listen to those who have worn both for a long time and have injured in both. So what do you guys think, should i get  a modern CE level 2 or go for the suspended protector, which will provide better shoulder protection? Sorry for asking too much or if it seems dumb questions.

Does anyone know the weight of hrp?

Long story short but I was chasing another vital member around in woods at Croom in Florida. Not sure how he made it through but and was close lined off bike from a thick vine and the HRP took most of the blow so it was only a 1 separation. My throat was cut and bruised some also.

The HRP cup cracked from the blow it had absorbed was well worth the investment for another HRP shoulder pad.

Happened early 2000's. 100% now. Shoulder seems to 'hang', looks odd. But seems to work ok!

I saw your post in another topic, glad you were lucky.

And what do you think would have happened to your shoulder if you were wearing a leatt 6.5 protectorjacket?

Btw your hrp looks really worn, if it is opal colored, it is much weaker, maybe if it was new it wouldn't crack and save your shoulder.

Yeah they Look much better. Kinda mad max with a youthful , punk rock look.  Vs under the jersey they all look like a washed up 500 gp rider from 99. Or a dead guy with a swelled chested.  All stiff lookin in Full Dork mode.

Fox Roost 2. Dislocated my shoulder at Tampa SX amateur day, 1992.

The tiny amount of protection from the shoulder guard webbing won't do much in a big impact.

Its actual red chrome and it 100% did its job! I am not a bruiser so You can tell by the bruising how hard of a hit it was.

Without the HRP my entire shoulder and chest would have been a pile of broken bones.

Yeah the netting suspended above the plastic on top . Is like a cushion on impact.  Not sure why riders r saying I broke collar bone. That has nothing to do with a chest protector.  I hv a pointy bone on top of my shoulder from a separation. Suspended net shoulders don’t bother it.  A solid padded piece does.  I don’t wear 1 at all sometimes. The HRP feels like you don’t hv it on . So I usually wear it.

If you want protection, the CE "roost protection" rating isn't enough. You want at least a "level 1" or better "level 2" CE impact rating.
