Alright folks. Curious who has recently been to the ranch and can give me some insight.
Bought a Ktm 300sx this summer after a few years off riding. I’m a runner/cyclist and lift weights and am in the best shape of my life at almost 35 years old. That being said, whats it take to be a qualifier (not top 20 competitive) older guy.
I’m a vet A rider and won races in +25 locally a few years ago but am curious if regionals are just blistering fast dudes.
I understand that racing and gauging it is the only real way to know, but any input is welcome. Thanks!
There's no +35 class at LL anymore. However, there's a big difference between +25 and the +30 classes. If you've done well in +25, you'll do just fine in +30 at the Ranch. Difficulty of your qualifier all depends on your area, how many they take, and who shows up.
Yup, your only options are +30 and +25.
+25 is anyone over 25 and not currently racing pro.
+30 is anyone over 30, not currently racing pro, AND cannot have ever scored a professional point. In other words, a rider in this class could have qualified for in SX and MX, raced an entire season or seasons so long as they never placed better than 21st in an individual moto.
In other other words, dudes are legit FAST in both classes. Always still possible to qualify (regional speed per class varies greatly), but if you're not pro-level speed and you do manage to make it to LL's, don't expect to be running up front.
Until recently, if you qualified for a SX you got at least one point. Daytona was the one exception because for several years they qualified 30 I believe, but no longer do that.
Short answer is yes, regionals are pretty blistering fast. In my opinion the regionals are gnarlier than the national in terms of speed and aggressiveness. Everyone is fast and charging as hard as they can because they've put so much effort into getting to Loretta's. If you're super fit and fast enough to get there you could probably thrive at the ranch because it's so damn hot, the track is so damn rough, and the motos are longer, but the regionals, in my experience, are a sort of hair on fire affair. Both 25+ and 30+ generally have some of the most entries, and both have ex-pro or high end amateur national level guys taking up the bulk of qualifying spots at a given regional. There are only 6 per, (4 in certain regions like out west) so that leaves you scratching and clawing for 3 moto scores that can get you a 5th or 6th o/a. It's hard. So, you've absolutely gotta get great starts and after that, you'll find out. No matter what anybody on here says though, if you can get it done it is super rewarding.

Faster than most people think. Most people underestimate the speed of the +30 class. I qualified in 25 & 30 the last 2 years. It seems 25 is more front heavy, falls off quicker. It’s like there are 3 speed levels. 30 is a lot closer especially from about 10-30th place.
I’d do 2 regions for sure if you are serious about trying to qualify! Just show up try your best. Everybody has good days & bad days, especially in amateur racing. But yeah it’s gnarly.
The fact you say "best shape of my life at almost 35 years old" must say alot about your fitness at 20 25. lol.
I mean not really. Im 32 & in the best shape of my life. I was fit at 20-25 as well. Just keep progressing. My main difference nowadays is need a little more rest & recovery time
Not to be a dick but imo if you have to ask you aren't fast enough. The guys I know that run those classes and don't even finish at the top are top local A guys. They ride 150-200 hours per year with multiple bikes and the regional races ive followed over the years are stacked. But with that being said some of the guys that qualify from them also qualified in other regions. Its no cake walk.
I’ve been lifting, running and cycling through most of my life. I’m stronger, more enduring and understand recovery better than ever. Being in the best shape of my life at 34 doesn’t correlate to the fact that I’ve been athletic and exercised most of my life.
This is the exact type of feedback I was looking for. You’re not a dick at all, that makes sense and I appreciate it
The answer is pro. Pro is the speed because every single vet class at Loretta's is open to pros. There is not a single amateur vet class there.
Dang that’s pretty eye opening when you say it like that!!
Glad you didn't take it like that. I'm friends/ride with a guy that's been there the last 10 years. Every year it seems to get more competitive because more and more guys that are fast standouts make that +25 or +30 age group and the older guys age out. Hes had 1 top 10 in a moto probably 8 years ago. He rides, traines, and preps harder each year and it seems like its harder for him to make it. He also does multiple regions, one year he did 5. I would say its like another job unless you were a top 10 national speed on a factory team at one point. The conditions and style tracks hes trained on your average rider would struggle to even turn a lap because its so tore up rutted out and rough. So when you hear guys like keefer say how hard the track at lorettas is times what you think by 10. Just like the guy on pulp last week saying how he didn't even jump the little finish line table because it was so rough. My friend would do multiple 30-45-60 minute motos on tracks like that 3-5 times a week for 2 months before lorettas. So when nicnak says faster than people think its absolutley wayyy faster than most people think. You have to be a local standout and then be dedicated to it like another job.
Just something I remembered that might help you understand the speed more. He finished in the 20s one year i believe overall in +25 +30. We went to redbud vet fest later that summer and he absolutely waxed the 25 30a guys. He only got beat one moto of the regular 450a support class by some younger kid. He fell say mid moto in one of the vet classes and was pretty far back and still managed to win. So hopefully that gives you some gauge of speed.
It doesnt matter where you live. Regionals are blistering fast in 25 and 30 and 40 for that matter. If your not attending national races through out the year and understand the speed of them you prob arent going to make it...LIke some said usually regionals are tougher then the ranch
Give it a shot. Qualify at an area go to regional and if you make it go.
Racing at Lorettas is something you will never forget.
Who’s your friend ?
Makes you wonder how fast is that Ky. Kid that did LL 2 yrs in a row on a 07 cr125 in 125 b/c. At Tomahawk reg he got a 2nd in 1 moto. It’s on Matty B,s yt great wo racing. I think he got a 11th 2 yrs ago. A local rider here went 1-1 at a regional at Wi. & Millville he’s mainly top 3 sometimes top 5, but these kids r real fast 1 mistake & your dropping 3 positions.
Pit Row
The speed is FAST. Dudes I know who rip were barely able to crack top 20 at Lorretta's in +30.
Look at previous year results, and see who you’ve raced against lately, if there’s guys you beat a lot, your good, if the guys finishing last at Loretta’s beat you always locally, then you have a lot of work to do to make it.
Can look at last year lap times too, I’m sure there’s a huge gap in speed from the 1-10th place guys versus the 30-42nd place guys.
The only thing you can do is just do it and find out. I think what you will find is that local racing doesn't even matter in relation to Lorettas. Guys come out of the woodwork that you have never seen and are pro level fast. The guy above that explained the regional being extremely intense is very accurate. Especially the first moto at a regional. Guys are so aggressive that it's like being in a street fight.
The only exception might be a regional in California. They don't seem to be very well attended, vs the other parts of the county. Knowing in your mind that there is 40-60 gnarly guys on the gate (gates) and 6 move on to the dance can be very overwhelming in itself.
If you are 35 in the 30+ class that also hurts you because every year a handful of fast new guys move into the class and after 5 years it adds up and you are no longer one of the young fast guys. The sportsman classes are almost as fast as the open classes because they are full of A riders and pro riders that didn't score a national point.
All of this is what makes it mean so much and why they shouldn't cheapen the event.
One thing not many people consider is the depth in the 25 and 30 classes. After many years off, I tried to qual in 2023 25+. I rode maybe 6 times total before the regional so didn't have high hopes, managed to get a good finish in moto 1 well inside the top 10. Moto 2 some dude took my front wheel second corner and thats all she wrote. Unless you are legit gnarly pro level you have to pull a top 7 start and just try to maintain to qualify and that's your best shot. Moto 3 got a decent start and shuffled back in corner 2. Made maybe 3 passes the whole race, finished way back. The class is just deep and very fast lol.
30+ is a bit better for sure (some of the dudes I beat in 25 did qual in 30) but its still similar. Gotta get a really good start all 3 motos and try to stay up there. Mid east, North central, and south east regions are fucking stacked. Try to do any of the others if your geographically close.
68 on the ktm singer. Was 86 the year lars raced.
Yes he’s fast…
Pro tip- you can't give a fuck about who's in your class. Great results are a product of the work you've done at home and the level of racing you are doing on a monthly basis, leading up to the event. All of this leads to confidence that will silence the noise around you.
Fitness- sounds like you have a solid base. Now, make it sport specific. Know your practice days, plan your moto's (long, sprint, intervals). Practice going from 0-100% effort with no practice laps. Know your armpump, lean how to manage it without crashing.
Lastly- practice starts more than ever. You may pull pin 40 and have to clean up a 25th place start. Be ready to deal with any of that adversity for moto 1.
Hope this helps.
