Hi Guys, we are planning on moving out to Australia from the uk, in around 18 months time. We have family in Perth and friends just outside of Brisbane. Motocross is a massive part of our lifestyle. My son is 9 years old and competing in the uk nationals. I just want some info regarding the areas above for riding/racing. Obviously Australi is way bigger then Uk, so is there a junior nationals season, or just local clubs. Also do most people use caravan and van or 4x4 for the race weekends mainly, or race vans motorhomes. I couldn’t see many motorhomes with built in Garages when looking in classifieds over there. But plenty of caravans. Cheers guys, look forward to hearing from you’s.
The southeast corner of Queensland around Brisbane has a big (for Australia) racing scene with multiple tracks within a few hour’s drive. There’s club days, a big series (500 riders), state and national title races.
Depending on your level of investment, you’ll see everything from utes, minivans, enclosed trailers, caravans and motor homes at the races.
most people just have a ute and load the bikes in the back. If your racing a lot, A sprinter van or hiace are always going to be the main vans here. And normally the towns the tracks are located in, the accommodation is pretty cheap being rural areas.
youll find its a fair distance to travel anywhere around AUS, lucky QLD has some amazing tracks and events as mentioned above.
And prepare for summer time coming up, QLD gets bloody hot. Might be a good idea to get the young ones a surfboard haha
IF your located in Brisneyland you have at your disposal many tracks within a 2ish hour drive.
QMP, Toowoomba, MXfarm, Kilcoy, Willowbank, Conondale, Gold Coast MX and the recently re-opened Warwick.
A new track is opening up in Gympie as we speak.
Unfortunately, Coolum has gone and i honestly think the club is done as they can't get a relocation from the local council. This may change though but coms have been near to none. The Coolum club are hardworking people and it's not a good sign with little comms coming from them.
I live close to the centre of Perth. As much as I’d love to recommend Perth if your son is likely to be racing at a national level the east coast is a far better location. National series rarely make it to WA.
Not that Perth is lacking for motocross - we have half a dozen tracks within an hour or two of the city plus the famous Manjiump track about 3 hours drive away.
Motocross is primarily a winter sport in Australia as the summer is mostly too hot.
For club days most people transport their bikes on an open trailer or the rear of a Ute. Next level up would be a van or fully enclosed trailer.

Mind if I ask what is behind the move to Aus?
Something else that might be worth considering is the cost of property, Brisbane/Sunshine coast is now the second most expensive region for housing at the moment. This definitely brings some negatives but the positive is that ive seen some amazing places in Qld for sale with home moto facilities that id love to call home.
Australian junior national championship is held over one weekend, location changes each year...

South East Queensland is the go for Motocross in Aus. The state Shell series is huge and has mutiple rounds a few hours from Brisbane. Heaps of practice tracks and you can do the national series with a sprinter van easy. 3 rounds were in Queensland this year within 2 hrs ish of Brisbane.
As said above, South East Qld around Brisbane is the place to be for moto. A few clubs within a couple hours drive for club days, Sunshine State series which gets 500 plus riders, Qld titles etc.
As for vehicles, we use a 4x4 ute(truck in america) and tow an enclosed trailer. We stay at caravan parks in onsite cabins when we travel to races that require overnight stays.
Vans such as a sprinter or similar either with or without a trailer are common
Jayco Base stations are very popular if you want to stay at the track.
Hey Ando what’s the name of the track just east of Perth that has a lot of pea gravel? Chidlow? Went there for a Aussie Junior titles years ago and can’t remember the name of the track.
Family in Perth and Brisbane?
Cripes, whatever of those 2 places you go to, you'll be Very Bloody Far from those at the other end of the Continent! The drive is something like 4300KM, Flight is 3606km.
I'm always surprised at how New Australians (and well, so many Australians that don't ever get out of their Cities or Towns) just don't realize how effing vast this place is.
If you are into racing, and keep at it again here, you'll certainly learn to travel, and see and do some great stuff. It won't be cheap though.
I'd say Brisbane might be The Go for you, but then, you've got to put up with the Bloody Queenslanders...... They are our Deep South here in OZ.
Deep South in the far north 😂
BSA & Harley Davidson motorcycle club? The track is located at Noble Falls, about an hour from Perth.
South East Queensland is very hard to beat for moto choice! I have been riding every weekend lately with a choice of tracks at our disposal!
Victoria is pretty good for riding and racing. Park4mx, city west mx, ridepark, Chesney vale possibly a few more public practice tracks also. Winter here would be pretty similar to what your used to. Summer is fucking hot tho 😂
Hmm don’t think so, but thanks. The 2003 event came up in conversation on the weekend, but no one could remember the name of the track. Poured rain and was freezing, should have been memorable 😂
AJS at Wanneroo maybe but that's a sand track.
Or maybe Lightweight Motorcycle Club at Byford?
Cheers mate
Just basically wanting a better life for our children. England in my eyes on the decline. Fortunately where we live is a small village. But the country is just no longer where I want to raise my family.
Pit Row
Thankyou
Thankyou
Thanks for all the info appreciate it
Yeh my auntie and uncle moved out to Perth in 80s. We have good friends just south of Brisbane who moved out there probably 10 years ago. All happy and said they wouldn’t give up there lifestyles in Australia. Appreciate the info, we’d never give up moto, that’s why I need to make sure we choose the right area. We currently use van and caravan at races in the uk. Caravans in aus are totally different beasts tho!! I’m well aware of the size that’s why was curious about the nationals series. Thanks again
Great news
Eric Walter Park in Chidlow?
Located here: -31.8709117, 116.2662818
That’s it, cheers!
If you move to Australia, don't move in spring or summer, coming from England you will find the heat unbearable, move in autumn, March/April, it will give you time to acclimatize!
Ha, never heard of it, but then again I'm not up with the junior scene.
The WA Junior Club which operates out of Chidlow started racing at the track in 1983, my dad was Vice President and Mum was Secretary at the time. We started at the club in 1974 for my Brother and 1975 for me ( i was 4 going on 5), that was the 4th track for the club that i rode at. When they got the land i was one of 3 kids doing the test riding for the original layout, it changed a few times over the years i was there, 1986 was my last year as a Junior.
couple of cool stories from those days, in 1983 Rick Johnson went to Perth for a sx in Fremantle, while he was there he come and rode a club day at Chidlow, originally just to do a couple of hot laps. He ended up borrowing a YZ100 and raced the older age group, he got beat and came 2nd. I cant remember if it was the next day or weekend but he did a riding school which i went to that was pretty cool.
If anyone else can remember the EP Performs Gear that Billy Liles rode in, well in 1984 Gregg Primm and the other guy from the gear company went to Chidlow also as they sponsored Lee Hogan. The other guy who still rode and Lee teamed up in a father son race and smoked everyone. All the other dads drank piss, smoked and were truckies haha. Fast forward to 2005 and i managed to get into the Primm museum in Vegas and Gregg was there that day so got to rehash an old story.
Love hearing stories like this!
Aussies are not afraid to tow with any type of vehicle ... If you end up with a family SUV or even a station wagon to start with, you could hookup a open motorcycle trailer or a rail across the back of the SUV.
Once you attend a local race or open practice, you'll quickly get a sense of what's available vs what's popular.
