Any body else’s kid do this?

My kid will beg to go out and ride, I agree, we spend all this time gearing him up (he always insists on wearing all his gear-boots, pants, jersey, chest protector, etc) and he rides about two laps and he’s done lol. He’s only 3, going on 4 here shortly, so I know his attention span is pretty short lol On the plus side, I never have to ask him to wear all his protective gear, he always insists on it lol.

Yup.  Grandson is terrible doing that.  Then he will go and ride all day the next time.  Enjoy the process, it's frustrating at times.

I love that he’s into it but here in NY the weather always sucks, especially this time of year, and he’s always begging to ride and gets super upset when he can’t, then when he asks and we actually can, it’s two laps lol

My son would do that but when he was ~8. He always brought his bmx bike along and would spend the rest of the day riding bmx on some jump he would find or make in the pit area. Good times!

My guess is that he really likes to wear the gear, and that maybe he likes riding, but it still scares him a bit?

I bet $1 that one day it'll just click, and he won't want to stop, ever Smile .

2 laps you say? That’s almost all of the old guys that I see at the track.

I’ve seen guys go out and come back after about 20 minutes. I think to myself that this guy may not be the fastest, but he sure can put in the laps. Then after a while I go out and see a group of about 5 grey beards sitting off the back of the track out of sight. They still only riding a lap or two.

Take him trail riding somewhere that’s fun…nicely laid out…and has terrain that’s interesting and even “scenic”.

That’s one way to get him out there for longer rides. You’ll need to stop and take a few minutes now and then…to let him recover/chill…probably. Take some water and some kind of snack, too. Laughing

This is often also better for them to get more time or a longer duration ride that helps with developing solid fundamentals.

But, aside from all that…just change the mission. Change the environment. Make it an adventure.

Good luck!

I’m guilty of this lol Ride for two laps, then spend 15 minutes trying to catch my breath and get some of the blood out of my forearms haha.

The track we go to has a little kiddie track, going to bring his bike when we go this year and see if he wants to ride it. I know he’s only 3 and his mind is all over the place I just find it hilarious how he feels like the world is going to end if he can’t ride, and then we spend more time getting ready than riding most of the time haha. Kids are absolutely crazy and it’s been quite the learning experience raising them lol.

I’m sure this plays a roll too. He conquered the Stacyc (which he would also ride for short periods most of the time) and now we’re on to a pw… definitely a huge adjustment for him. He loves that he has a “real” bike now but it’s definitely tougher for him to manage and I worry that maybe he’s not having as much fun on it. I try offering him the stacyc instead of the pw but he’s pretty much over it and only wants the pw haha.

Loads up in perfectly clean truck with a new bike to the track for practice. Signs up for +35A but it’s been a few months. Unloads the pristine bike and gets new gear on. Does a few stretches and listens to the bike idle as it warms slowly.

2 laps into the watered deeply tilled track and pumped up like a rock. No big deal it has been a while. Second session (45 minutes later) 2 more laps with better pace. Confidence growing, still get pumped up.

45 minutes later practice 3 and the track is brutal. 2 of the best laps have confidence mooning only to discover it’s because your arms are jello. Another 45 minutes, a Red Bull, 3 Ibuprofen, and a ham n cheese later back up for practice 4. This time the legs are jello and the arms feel like they are folding on every large breaking bump. Cranked out 3 laps just to prove you’re still a boss in your final session.

Rest of the day is spent hanging out in shorts and flip flops drinking beer and boasting you still “got” it until you are convinced to miss Sunday evening dinner with the Mrs. for Hooters with the boys.

My kid raced his first beginner series on a CRF 150 and took 3rd in the points. He hit a huge growth spurt and is about 5'5 and 140lbs so i got him a 250f. Went over the bars practicing at home 3 weeks ago and now wont touch anything but the pit bike. Looks like i may have bought myself a brand new 250f. He's 15. Id take a 3 year old at least wanting to ride over being too scared to ride at 15 years old.

Don't push him to ride more than he wants and keep it fun. My son just turned 8 and is finally asking to ride longer. Having other similar aged and skilled kids around riding helps as well. I had lots of buddies get out of riding because their dad's were complete assholes.

You gotta get a $25k 4 seater side by side with ac and a rocking stereo for him to drive through the pits too.

Amateur nationals are expensive!

Had a PW50, then TTR50, now CRF110s for my  8 and 9 year old boys.  They didn't take to the PW as I thought they would, until I got them Stacycs.  After a few weeks on the Stacycs (and confidence building) they wanted to ride their dirtbikes really bad.  Now I cannot keep them off and every ride is "not long enough."

For mine i think he enjoys wearing the costume (mx gear) It's like Halloween every week :-)

He gets to tell his pals at school that he's a "racer" LOL. He begs me to take him racing - but doesn't have a competitive bone in his body and really doesn't care if he's last or lapped. He'll stop mid moto to help kids pick up their bikes or maybe stops to adjust his boots/goggles etc lol.

He likes it so i guess I'll burn our $$$ so he can play Mr dress up lol.

Drives me crazy - but i guess big picture is he's having fun. For me FUN was competing and trying to be my best - win.....for him ??? I have no bloody idea. Kids are weird. He's 10 btw.

3 yr old......good luck. They are like crack head squirrels on normal day...LOL.

Just be happy he isnt in front of a phone.  My 9 year old isnt getting a phone period until 16.  The saying is when you want their childhood to end get them a phone.  I take him to the track he knows we are there all day so he rides, plays in the dirt, finds some kids to play with, rides some more, drives his traxxas, rides around the pits.  Like it used to be when I was a kid I just never got a dirtbike.  Kids need to entertain themselves and be bored.

Apparently, my brother and I did the same thing on PW's. My dad says we would take 2 laps and be done...can't ever live it down.

I never would push any of this on him, I dont even ask him to go out and ride (I wouldn’t have to anyways lol) The second he isnt enjoying it or has had enough we stop. I like that he likes the sport but if it gets to a point where he’s not enjoying it and wants to play basketball or something, it would tear me up on the inside a little bit, but I’d sell the bike and go buy a basketball hoop for him with a smile on my face.

When he rides his Stacyc I will ride my pit bike with him, but he’s still too new on the pw, he still has quite a few tip overs. He’s still super young. Sometimes due to his size and intelligence I forget that lol.
