IMO bed size wins. Tundra doesn’t offer a large cab with a large bed. It’s so nice to be able to put three bikes in my bed and still close the tailgate. IMG 9938 0

Why the hell wouldn’t you support the UAW’s?  You say that like you’re proud. With the climate in this country these days, I would be embarrassed to diss an American staple.  I guess you’re one of those people that think Romney was right in wanting to kick that industry to the curb. Go Japan!

Open a thread in non-moto if you want to discuss further.

...and yeah, I'm proud to not support them.

Boys, it's time for a new truck.

Current ride is a 2006 Toyota Tundra Double Cab SR5 4x4.

Generally the truck has been great to me but parts are simply aging out and it's going to get increasingly expensive and I'd like something more modern.

I've owned most brands in the past and have really had good luck with the Toyota Tundra but see that the modern Tacoma is basically the same size as my older version - which worked well, but a tad more cab space would be welcome. I also had a chance to ride in a neighbor's F150 crew cab for quite a while and was very impressed.

So let's hear your thoughts on these trucks as everyday drivers that get moto duty as well!

P.S. if your f-150 has 332,000 miles, it probably doesn't have a 10 speed or turbos. My 22 f-150 has already disappointed a few times unfortunately.

Bingo....    let's see how long the turbo motors last.

It seems like Toyota tried to address their fuel economy concerns by going low displacement turbo induced but idk if I agree with that move. Seems like they have some kinks to iron out and I wouldn’t be willing to be the test rat. Maybe for the future gens

I agree....it's about fuel economy.   It's why most new vehicles are coming with the small displacement turbo motors.

Think twice about owning one out of warranty.

I've been a big proponent of Toyota over the years.....but I'm not onboard with these turbo motors.

At this point I don't want to buy anything made since COVID.    Manufacturers are having all sorts of quality issues since then.

Have the money to buy new, but I will buy  used.     One more reason I'm keeping my 22 year old "beater" V8 6-speed "daily driver".

This thread makes me want to keep my current truck and not want to go shopping for anything new until all the manufacturers get their shit straight.  Call me old fashioned, but a solid well built, non AFM V8 engine mated to a 9 or 10 speed transmission, sounds reliable and low drama.  Ya, its not going to get +20 mpg.  So what, Its not a prius.  Anything turbo / hybrid, et al seems like a recipe for premature failures and drama once the miles hits +100K.  And for any new truck costing north of $60K, the standard ought to be 250K minimum trouble-free miles before any serious mechanical work has to be done.  JMHO

Smart man.      These newer vehicles will not last like the previous versions did.

If you can afford to buy a new vehicle every time the warranty is up....more power to you.

We could do that, but we prefer to keep vehicles a long time.   Don't need to "keep up with the Joneses" and never will.

$$$$ in the bank is more important.

Fun fact on the 10speed transmission, it was a joint development between Ford and GM.

Every GM vehicle I ever owned with an automatic transmission had it fail before 100k miles.

Family members of ours currently own GM junk and the transmissions have gone bad.

It's too bad, I think the Silverado is one of the best looking trucks made right now.    ....but I know better than to buy one.

My 2005 Tundra SR5 Extended cab with a V8 only has 52,000 miles on it. Had it since new and the only big repair I have ever done was the water pump started leaking at about 36,000 miles. It was out of warranty but Toyota paid for half of it. I thought briefly of getting a new truck but heck I am 68 years old so this thing will still be going long after I’m not. Will keep it and maybe find a fun driving car.

Let's not even get into the UAW and bailouts bullshit.

Holding a grudge against Japan for a war 80+ years ago is beyond ridiculous.     That's like blaming todays white folks for slavery.

To discuss this any further, we'll need to move it non-moto.

The German and Japanese vehicles we own now are/have been the best cars we've ever owned.   Hands down.

This is sooo ironic. Guess where a majority of the Japanese manufacturing is? Right here in the US just like Ford and GM. Except not through the UAW. Japanese manufacturing is worse with hiring immigrants through a staffing company that pays their associates pennies on the dollar. Source? I see this stuff first hand as ive been employed in several Japanese's automotive supplier outfits.

I can guarantee you there is not much difference between the manufacturing of Japanese and American branded vehicles here in the US. They're all built the same.

Depending on condition you could prob still sell for over 20k if you wanted to  That is super low miles for a almost 20 year old vehicle

How are the Ford turbos doing past 100k miles?

I went with a non turbo V6 because I was worried about high mileage durability (previously took my 5.3 liter GMC to 250k miles before my daughter crashed it into a school bus). But Im kind of regretting it a little wanting more power.

On the Ecoboost forums theres tons of high mileage success stories. I know there's always a potential for failure on any extra moving parts though, i protected myself with the warranty. I read through GM forums often too and read about more failures there than Ford's.

I bought my wife an avalanche at one time. I bought it with 60k on it. At 90k it killed a motor because of the active fuel management. Same thing happened at 110. Those 5.3s have been touted as bullet proof but that truck bit my wallet hard and ill never buy another 5.3.

I dont know many people that keep vehicles as long as people over 50 like to.

I guess that explains it. I'm 63 and still driving my 2002 F150. It was one of the last F150s to come with a 5-speed, which meant I got a sweet deal on it. I'll keep waiting to get that good a deal before I get a different truck.

The 2.7 seems to be less problematic than the 3.5 but overall they are both great motors, just be sure to keep up on the oil changes. 5k miles MAX. Most of the popular problems (cam phasers, carbon buildup on the valves, etc) with the 3.5 all stem from extended oil change intervals

OP - have you considered? It has a built in camper, gets 35 mpg, cost 5 grand, and is a manual, and is a sweet daily. Name a better rap sheet than that. 96BD0D74-B025-488C-9F74-7BC5EA3A4DE7

Tacoma's look really good, but they're also a V6 that sucks gas like a V8 and makes the power of a 4 cylinder.

Not the worst idea ever. Plus, putting the seats forward and sleeping inside is a bonus.

Yes....I posted later changing my vote.   I did not know the new Tacos came with the turbos.     Absolute deal killer for me.

All I know is I priced out the F-150 I'd buy if I was to get one today and it was 84k before taxes and crap. Like WTF? I'll stick with my 49k OTD 2019 RAM Laramie with 55k miles that's fully loaded and paid for.

My last ecoboost was a 2014, I replaced the turbos at 170k, then other shit started failing so replaced the truck with a newer ecoboost. Great towing, feels rapid for something so large, and the interior is comfy on long trips for the family. Easy choice.

That said, I want a Coyote next and to keep the thing forever.

In the last couple months I have rented a few trucks to haul bikes across the country, a tacoma, dodge 1500, and f150.  I used a bike trailer, and the bikes were all larger touring bike (Goldwings, BMWs, and a couple Harleys).  F150 had the most power, but was not very good at towing, transmission didnt feel right, and the truck as a whole was not stable.  The Dodge was better at towing, but you really had to push it to make it go, and more stable.  The Tacoma surprised me, it was a smaller truck, less power, but was actually very easy to tow with.  My take away, the 1500 class trucks dont seem like much of a step up from the Tacoma class trucks, other then their physical size, when it comes to doing real truck work.
