Boys, it's time for a new truck.

Current ride is a 2006 Toyota Tundra Double Cab SR5 4x4.

Generally the truck has been great to me but parts are simply aging out and it's going to get increasingly expensive and I'd like something more modern.

I've owned most brands in the past and have really had good luck with the Toyota Tundra but see that the modern Tacoma is basically the same size as my older version - which worked well, but a tad more cab space would be welcome. I also had a chance to ride in a neighbor's F150 crew cab for quite a while and was very impressed.

So let's hear your thoughts on these trucks as everyday drivers that get moto duty as well!

The Tundra is the most American made truck on the market, been that way for over 10 years too.

P.S. if your f-150 has 332,000 miles, it probably doesn't have a 10 speed or turbos. My 22 f-150 has already disappointed a few times unfortunately.

F150 vote from me. Ive had a few but im really liking my current one which is a supercrew 6.5' bed with the 3.5 and max tow. I had a 5.0 3.73 5.5' bed platinum and loved it but really wanted the 6.5' bed and towing mirrors (highly recommend even if you hate the looks, unparalleled visibility is my main reason and towing second). Mines just an XLT 302a package, so cloth seats with every other available option. When i do it again, itll definitely be a lariat or higher in the same wheel base and cab configuration. The 3.5 is a monster tow motor for a half ton too. Its like a diesel dragging my toy hauler. Low rpms at cruising speed vs the high rpm i was used to in my 5.0. If i didnt care about bed length, id even consider a 2.7. Good mpg, fast, and relatively cheap for what you get. Im sold on the 6.5' bed though and couldn't give it up now. Gearing is important too. 3.55 or 3.73. i wouldn't consider a 3.31 truck.

I wouldn't even consider a tacoma because its so cramped inside. My wife's best friend has one and its not comfortable. Couldnt imagine riding out of it.

Tundras are nice, but to me, still outdated. Admittedly, i have not been in the newest gen tho. Buddy has one and is complaining about the short bed tho. PXL 20230904 213240202

I love this thing! King size bed and room for bikes is perfect. Wife wants a trailer with a side slide now so i listed this one for 24k on marketplace.

Changing my vote.   The new Tacomas are now turbo too.       You're crazy to buy anything with a turbo and keep it once they go out of warranty.    Doesn't matter who makes em.

My money is stick with what you got or upgrade to a newer pre-owned pre-turbo Toyota.

It seems like Toyota tried to address their fuel economy concerns by going low displacement turbo induced but idk if I agree with that move. Seems like they have some kinks to iron out and I wouldn’t be willing to be the test rat. Maybe for the future gens

I test drove the 3.5 eco and the 5.0.  Knowing I'm keeping it for awhile, the v8 was an easy choice.  That coyote is a solid engine.

Been driving Fords in and out of Baja for over a decade. The current F150 Hybrid is rated at 23/23 and has 2.4 kW of output stock and for $750 can have 7.2 kW. With a 6.5’ bed…it’s pure Moto Hauler.

My current Baja-Bike carrier is a 2019 T150 Transit tats been virtually bullet-proof for over 150,000 and just returned from one of many Baja trips. Again…BULLETPROOF.

Currently, Ford has 1.9% for 72-74 months on 2023 F150s. I’m currently looking for an F150 set-up like the hybrid I mentioned. Gonna pseudo Raptorize it for chasing in Baja/SCORE via the fine folks at Baja HQ.

Whatever you get, I hope you’re happy with it.

You can. I have one. 2018 F150 Lariat HDPP package, 3.5l TT, 10 speed. 2406 lbs of payload, 11,500 towing capacity. I have 110,000 on mine, not trouble free. VCTs are an issue, and I just had the CDF clutch housing replaced under a TSB. With any new vehicle, shop around and get the 120k mile (or even 150k) extended warranty. My 120K mile warranty cost $2200 and it was worth every dime.

I do like my 150. I've got over 35000 tow miles on it with a 3500lb moto trailer and a 9500lb toy hauler. It handles both with ease and is a great road trip vehicle - quiet, powerful, lots of room, has a WIFI hotspot built in. No Tundra, Chevy or Dodge 1/2 ton can tow or carry what I do, safety and under all rated limits, period. Payload and RAWR (4800 on the HDPP) is what matters and no one else makes a 1/2 ton that can match the HDPP. I did a crapload of research before ordering mine and I looked at every truck out there at that time including 3/4 tons. If you are just throwing a bike or 2 in the bed, no worries with almost any PU, but if you work it hard like I do, you need the right tool.

Edit - fuel mileage. 16 around town, 22 on the HWY unloaded, 9-12 towing heavy. There is no free lunch. If you are worried about fuel mileage, get a Prius and don't tow anything. Smile

I have a 2016 supercab with a 2.7 and I do like it. I have 140K on mine and I'm starting to wonder if I should trade it in on something newer with less miles.

100% agree, I have also owned one, piss poor on fuel, and gutless, literally mileage of a v8 power of a I4.  Once I put a good offroad tire on it, I got about 18l per 100km on hwy..  And, as soon as it had 2 bikes in it, it was bottomed out.  Also interior is tiny. Sold it after 1 year. My  new f150 TT3.5 gets 10L per 100km on the hwy, and 14 in the city.

Let's not even get into the UAW and bailouts bullshit.

Holding a grudge against Japan for a war 80+ years ago is beyond ridiculous.     That's like blaming todays white folks for slavery.

To discuss this any further, we'll need to move it non-moto.

The German and Japanese vehicles we own now are/have been the best cars we've ever owned.   Hands down.

No, since you solicited it, I would like to get into the “UAW bailout and bullshit”…non-moto would be fine…for starters, do you realize the UAW paid back that “bailout” with interest?  What if private individuals had to do that?  I can think of a certain orange person who filed bankruptcy and the LARGEST LOSSES IN THE ENTIRE COUNTRY, FOR AN INDIVIDUAL OR CORPORATION, 10 YEARS IN A ROW!…. if he was held responsible for his losses/actions, do you think he would’ve become president?  What would’ve happened to the UAW and ALL THOSE HARD WORKING AMERICANS AND THEIR JOBS if Romney became president?

At least you’re not trying to be patriotic while dissing America, but you are smearing the name of a certain MX hero.

Lots of options out there in the truck world. I like keeping it simple no turbo vehicles. The turbo will need to be replaced at some point. Oil leaks will need to be fixed due to blow by from the engine being under constant boost.
My buddy has a 2021 Tacoma TRD PRO It’s nice but we haul snowmobile trailers in the winter. It struggles and gets worse gas mileage than my 5.3 Silverado and I’m towing a bigger trailer.
This is the last year for the Hemi in the Ram. Unfortunately it comes with E-Torque which is their version of a hybrid. My brother in law just purchased one it drives nice but E-Torque is  just something more to break.
Chevy and GMC offer the 5.3 and the even better 6.2 which are very good engines. I test drove the new 2.7 and didn’t like it at all. I have great experiences with my GM vehicles and love my ‘23 Silverado.
My buddy with the Tacoma has a Silverado on order after he drove with me on a snowmobile trip. I will say the dealer is giving him very good money for his trade in.

But the newer 5.3 and 6.2 gm motors aren't that great. They have a TON of lifter failures. I had to lemon law my 2020 because...

There are some lifter failures. I believe it is due to the active fuel management and many by not changing the oil sooner than what the dashboard oil percentage tells you.My friends nor I ever had cam or lifter problems in hundreds of thousands of miles on are LS and LT motors (oil changes at 3000-4000 miles). I am going to get the Active Fuel Management delete for my 2023 Silverado. With 10 speed trans I don’t like the feel of the motor when the AFM kills  the cylinders.

Awesome I think I got 12-13 years out of mine,  same exact model. Looking again but my kid insists we get another one with cargo in the front so I ended up looking at outbacks again.  Need a new truck first so it's gonna have to wait. Been running 2500hd gas guzzlers so they're out of the equation these days time for something new.

Depends on what your priorities are.   Sounds like you are a "keep a truck forever" kinda guy which basically rules out anything American made in the last so many years as they are all full of electrical gizmos, turbos, and have issues once they get past warranty.

As far as the supposed awesome mpg's of the Ford PowerBoost hybrid, I can tell you from experience that goes straight out the window if you are towing.  Did a bunch of miles in my 2019 Tundra pulling a 7x14 box trailer and a bunch in a 2022 F150 hybrid pulling same trailer.   The F150 will make you cry with the single digit mpg's.. lol   Yes, pulls good.  No issues.   Just keeps the turbos spooled, shuts off the hybrid, and drinks some gas.

I have the 5.0 in my F150

Ill elaborate on the ford motors having owned two of the three main options (leaving out the small non turbo'd gas trucks).

My 5.0 platinum i loved. The 3.73's made it feel incredibly sporty. It also had a tow rating of 10,900 because of the gearing. Itd hang with the best of them and towed pretty dang good, just took high rpms. I ran it to 150k with only a few relatively inexpensive hiccups. I bought this originally because like most, turbos scared me a little. It was like the kx450 of the motors. Did everything pretty well but nothing spectacular.

My 3.5 with 3.55s tows SO much better than my 5.0. When i say better, i just mean less perceived effort. Its like a mini diesel. Low rpm power galore and it really scoots when you open it up. I do think the extra wheel base and higher ply tires on my 3.5 helped the overall towing as well even though my trailers only 5k.

It youre not towing, throw a dart at a board.

If youre towing, the 3.5.

If its new and will have a warranty, 3.5. If its not new and you plan on keeping till it dies, the 5.0 will probably serve you best if i had to guess. I cant keep them long enough for it to ever really matter though.

I bought my 3.5 with low miles, so it still had a decent amount of factory warranty left and i spent 2k on a bumper to bumper warranty to 100k. When i get close to 100k, ill get that lariat in the same configuration if i choose to stay half ton.

Used my dads 22 f350 6.7 for the daytona trip this year and it was excellent. No wind pulling you around like you can experience in a half ton, but its not really a fair comparison and you didn't ask about bigger trucks.

If youre willing to travel, Sarchione in Alliance Ohio. Talk to Joey. They really take care of people there.

Tacoma is too small, plus everybody and their brother drives one.

Tundra is too "megatron" looking, and only comes with a V6 ( and Im a Toyota Guy )

These new F150s are on a new level, and best looking,..by far. F150 would be my choice.

I just purchased a used 2021 f150 xlt with 36k miles on it a few weeks ago, has the 2.7 with the 10 speed transmission, I came from a 2010 silverado 5.3 that I owned for about 9 years, the 10 speed definitely took some used to getting used to but I'm hoping this ford treats me as good as my old chevy cause that thing was rock solid, no major problems in the 9 years of ownership

This thread makes me want to keep my current truck and not want to go shopping for anything new until all the manufacturers get their shit straight.  Call me old fashioned, but a solid well built, non AFM V8 engine mated to a 9 or 10 speed transmission, sounds reliable and low drama.  Ya, its not going to get +20 mpg.  So what, Its not a prius.  Anything turbo / hybrid, et al seems like a recipe for premature failures and drama once the miles hits +100K.  And for any new truck costing north of $60K, the standard ought to be 250K minimum trouble-free miles before any serious mechanical work has to be done.  JMHO

How are the Ford turbos doing past 100k miles?

I went with a non turbo V6 because I was worried about high mileage durability (previously took my 5.3 liter GMC to 250k miles before my daughter crashed it into a school bus). But Im kind of regretting it a little wanting more power.

I searched a long time for a 4x4 Tundra with a 6.5 bed during the Covid period but the dealers never located one for me.
I “settled” for a GMC 1500 AT4 with the 3.0 Duramax. I’ve owned a lot of trucks but I’ve never been more impressed with a power train than this small Duramax with the 10 speed trans. It pulls my 7,000 pound travel trailer with ease while getting 13-15 MPG. In town, it gets over 20 MPG and 25-28 MPG on the highway while unloaded.

Fun fact on the 10speed transmission, it was a joint development between Ford and GM.
