I went to a couple supercross races in his era. Yes he had long autograph lines but there were a LOT of fans booing him. He had an image at the time of not caring about the fans or generally feeling inconvenienced to take a picture or sign something. And a lot of people got tired of seeing him win / knowing the outcome of the race. I want to say it was Atlanta 05' his epic battle with Reed when a large section of the stands were screaming in unison "F U Carmichael"
