I agree with you 100%. I traded my 23 KX250 for the KTM 125. If I had the choice between the KTM or the YZ, I would have picked the YZ without a second thought. The reason for that are the things you laid out in your post, but I’m trying to make the best of it.

If the KTM disappoints me, I will sell it and buy a YZ 125.

I was unlucky enough to own the first year of the KTM 250 SXF. That bike had more problems than my 125 so far. I felt taken advantage of by KTM on that deal. That bike was a dog. It would die once the engine reached a certain temperature and would not crank. It would only restart after it completely cooled down.

If my current KTM doesn’t turn out well, I will never own one again.

That’s my fear. I’ve always gotten pleasure out of rebuilding Honda two strokes. With parts availability becoming an issue, it’s time to move on to something more modern.

I’ll be the first to admit, I don’t know sh** about the newer bikes. Hence, my constant reading about them. All I see are, broken pistons, electrical issues, mapping problems, injector problems. The list goes on.

The KTM 300 XC was of interest but, that got crossed off the list. Beta 300 RX is iffy knowing several people having electrical problems.  Husky 300 TX falls uncles the KTM umbrella.

I don’t want a heavy, choked out  CRF450X.
Not interested in a CRF450WE for single track.
Maybe I’m just stuck in my head going over everything but, I think getting what we pay for isn’t too much to ask of the manufacturers.

Hopefully, things work out for you with the 125.

I've got a '17 300XC. I've called it a modern KDX more than once. Great bike... but it's carbureted and still resembles my other 2-strokes from the last 40 years. Not my dream bike but I really enjoy it, no complaints and I haven't had the headaches described on the new NASA -approved models they've been releasing after '19'

Buying used is always risky, but maybe a you could find a primo '19 or earlier 300XC or TX300.

Also have '06 YZ and CR125s. Parts are no issue for the YZ but for the CR (and my '03 CR250) it's absolutely a reality. That CR125 is a blast to ride, but riding it is like having a box of devine chocolate that you can't buy anymore - enjoy every bite because you know that when it's gone, it's gone!

I currently have a 2001 CR 250 and, a 2004 CR 125 parked in the garage. Simple things like RC cables on the 04 are NLA. I heard Motion Pro can make them but, anytime I’ve bought a Motion Pro throttle cable it was too short lol.

I’m wanting to buy a new bike this time around. I just have to figure out which one to pull the trigger on. I might just have to wait a year or, two for the manufactures to figure out their design flaws. Hopefully, they do. It’s insane to think a current, 11K bike can’t be just as reliable as a YZ that hasn’t changed much since 2006.

AHHHHH!!!  Decisions lol.

I hear ya. And aren't the RC stepper motors also NLA and have to be obtained from non-moto specific sources (generic motor)?

Got a buddy that just bought a Beta 300 RR Race Edition. Carbureted, seems like a nice bike but that price tag is tough to swallow.

Have thought about a YZ250X and getting that "Hitlis" PV to see how it works, but I've got a virtually new '07 YZ250 that I could do the same to and simply revalve the suspension, throw a kickstand on and be real close to an X for a fraction of the cost.

I’m a new owner of a 125 XC. I’ve fowled one plug so far. It was my first fowled plug in my 43 years of riding.

I’ve been on a mission since to learn as much as I can about these new beasts. From what I have gathered so far is that there is a period of time after starting the bike where you should not be giving it any gas as the sensors attempt to calculate the EFI settings. Then after the period, most says it’s about 1 minute, you should only give it very little throttle as you ride around and let the engine warm up to operating temperature. Then at that point you are good to go. Many people swear by this method and say the bike has been wonderful since they started this routine.

When I fowled my plug, I did none of these steps, I had already ridden a few warm up laps so I assumed the bike was ready to go. After waiting around 20 mins or so, I started it and just headed straight to the track. My first jump I came to, I was heavy on the throttle going up the face. Once I landed, the bike went bonkers. It was cutting out and bogging badly. I didn’t know it at the time but I fowled the plug. The bike would still run somewhat, but I was able to get back to the pits.

With all of this said, I still haven’t figured out how I’m supposed to do a dead engine start for my scrambles come up.

In 23’ they specifically had it in the manual to not warm it up by idling it. The start up routine you’re describing is for the obsolete TPI. Warm your bike up on the stand as you would with a carb two stroke. Once warm shut it off. Go ride it.

Ugh, that’s what I did when I fowled the plug. I appreciate the guidance. I’ve read a few of your posts over the years and know you know what you’re talking about.

I had found that starting routine online and the guy was describing it as a TBI starting procedure. I guess I’m back to square one. It’s a little depressing haha.

New YZ or this.  Last of the carb'd Austrian bikes.  I have one and I love it.   Rips, super smooth and easy to ride.  No stupid a$$ dealer mapping or electronics to deal with.  Couldn't make it bog or foul a plug if you tried.   No "super secret special starting procedure" to compensate for a flawed product.  Kick and Rip.  Too easy.

Seems like there’s lots of guys in here talking poorly about bikes that they don’t own.

I’ve got a 24 125XC that’s been absolutely fantastic and I would take it everyday of the week over any of my other carb’d 2 strokes.

If I’m included in the comment, I’m only trying to learn about brands I have no idea about. Magazines used to be a good source Way back when. Not so  much anymore. Adding a tooth to the rear sprocket seems to fix everything.

I’m trying to engage with actual owners of bikes to see if the problems  are just rumor fodder or, actual facts. Though this thread is about 125’s and, I’m interested in a 300, it’s hard to cherry pick a good bike without including other models.

If your comment wasn’t inclusive of myself, I apologize and, I’m glad you got a good bike.

I feel I need to tell you that it's obvious you're far too reasonable and civil to be posting on Vital.

Please refer to some of the posts from other members for irrational, bombastic, lewd, hostile, etc., examples before posting again so you can see how it's done. Perhaps some "Hooked On Profanity" language tapes would help you polish your dialogue? Whistling

Dude. You don’t know a mother fucking thing about me. Who the fuck are you telling me what to do? Judgmental Trick!!!  Better? 😂😂

Just kidding. I’m a foreman for a commercial plumbing company. Insults, derogatory nicknames and, everything else are the norm.

I have no issue being decent. Especially if I’m uncertain the response was aimed at me.
But, if it comes down to reciprocation of shit talking, I’m all in lol.

Well, if you're in commercial construction that's the equivalent of a graduate degree in confrontational/aggressive communication! Grinning

Had a worker being verbally berated by a site super while they were going up a stairwell turn around and jump down at the super, planting his feet in his chest, knocking him all the way down to the landing and almost knocking him out. The worker continued to run from the site and last we heard was back across the border. Shocked

Nothing like some of the dialogue and exchanges that go on on the job site, for sure.

Carry on!

Ridden twice. I’m batting .500 for the times I’ve had to push it off the track. I wish I was as lucky as you are, but the fact remains that these bikes are wildly inconsistent off of the assembly line.

When my sponsoring dealer says don't buy one (at cost) but keep my carbed bikes, I listen.

Bit of a tangent, but are the ergonomic changes to the '22+ YZ worth shelling out the extra cash for?

I don't know what sort of financial hit you'd be looking at to make the change, but this thread might be worth following if you're interested in getting the '22+ experience and might save you significant coin -

Too easy.

We had a 22 carb bike.  Bought a 23 fuel injected bike.  Fuel injected bike broke the piston and grenaded the whole engine at 10 hours. .  Sold the fuel injected bike and kept the carb bike.

I do believe they will figure the new bikes out, but it may take a few more years.

I should add that my 125 was great the couple of times after I rode it after my initial incident. It seems I just let the cylinder load up too much with a long idle. Even the green map seemed fine. A little rich, but certainly rideable.

That’s soo crazy. All the problems with the 125 since 98 the 125 has been a rocket & pretty reliable.  Now a 20 yr old cr125 will blow its side panels off.  I can’t wait to hear all the angry dad,s yelling .  There’s no way a 57 yr old skinny trucker just beat my boy. Haha . Ride RedIMG 5650

Yup.. time for lemon law or some other kind of escalation.  Demand a replacement bike or refund.

I looked back at your original post as I couldn’t remember what the issues were with your boys bike.

You’ll  be coming up on 3 weeks! I’m sorry man.

Have they even contacted you with an opinion of what the issue may be?

Beat me to it. Interesting that the KTM and Husky gained about 10lbs.

Too easy.

Beat me to it. Interesting that the KTM and Husky gained about 10lbs.

Are you forgetting?

Heavy is the new light... at least that's what I keep hearing. Dizzy

My son just got a call, bad injector.  KTM paid for the part and labor.

It sounds like getting some of theses companies like Twisted Development (or others) that can program the ecu is the way to go for these. However, it’s touchy since some of these ecus can burn the piston if not set right.

But there are sooo many pre-‘23 125s available, I can’t see a reason to not get one of the holdovers.

Does anyone know if the fuel tank off a 21' 125XC will fit on a 22' SX150?

Update on the kid’s KTM 250SX. 5 hours on it since the dealer fixed it. We are at Red Bull Day in the Dirt Out East. Bike runs fine Friday, go to start it Saturday morning for our race and it’s the same thing all over again. Won’t stay running. I feel bad, he spent a bunch of money on entry fees and now he has to race his pitbike against 250s. Back to the dealer!
