Ty Davis is a cheater… My dad was the ref for the Adelanto GP for years and caught Ty on multiple occasions cutting the course, he was hundreds of feet away from the course cutting it too. Not just taking an inside “cheater line”. He also cheated in Baja. Of course the old fucks at D37 who worshipped Ty at the time still allowed him to win without any penalties.

No single person in D37 has the authority to overturn a DQ.

And Norm Stuart wasn't even on the competition committee in the 90's, so he wouldn't have even had a vote.

It was the at the high school in brea. Where Ty protested it and they over turned it. Norm was the one there with a loud mouth convincing them.

Malcom Smith and or Dick Mann. Both were great riders and were fast enough to win at any discipline.

If you need proof, go watch On Any Sunday.

I can't really be convinced otherwise either and I'm a huge fan of lots of the dudes mentioned in this thread.  Hell, I like Manni more than Billy, but Billy is just an absolute alien of a rider.

Bottom line, if your name has been mentioned here you are/were a bad mother f'er.

Super Hunky's point of view(may he roost in peace):

"They've been accused of being cheaters of bending the rules to win … of being elitist … of being arrogant. However, the true bottom line is this: The Checkers exist to win. They know the desert better than anyone else … and do their home-work. Like Sam Burg (a longtime Checker member) said: "We've been accused of cheating a lot, but most of the accusations are because we've been so fast that no one else ever saw us. We were in front. Anything goes to accuse the Good, Bad and the Ugly."

There are so many great choices and I am certainly biased towards US riders. That said there are so many world enduro riders that have Mx and Trials backgrounds that certainly should be on this list. Juha, Sala, Peterhansel,Ericsson, Tiainen,Knight, Watts, Ahola, Aubert, Price and many more.

Sammy Miller.

Could do Everything.

Speed - Road Racing = GPs

Control and finesse - Trials

And everything in between.

Cripes, in the 50s he / others would use the same bike for Road Racing(3rd in the 250cc World Championships in 1957 - and, could probably have gone further upwards, but for the Italian manufacturers pulling out of the GPs) and then Trials / Dirt / Grass Track, Enduros / ISDTs and Scrambles - but, of course, highly modified to suite whatever event they were participating in. It was all very seasonal.

And, Sammy Developed / Made bikes. He was a Major part of Bultaco, and the Sherpa Ts, when he knew the Big Old Thumpers time was running out, and then, Honda (Trials bikes). Had his own business, Sammy Miller Products until he sold it in 2007.

I think he still has the record for most Expert (well, highest) Level Trials event wins in the UK, and, perhaps the World. Over 1300.

And, if you're in England, getting to his Museum is a Do Not Miss.

The Sammy Miller Motorcycle Museum:   https://sammymiller.co.uk/

He has a Lot of videos up of it on YouTube, by the way.

And one of his bikes, GOV 132, a 'somewhat modified' Ariel HT5, ranks as one of the most famous Motorcycles in The World - even if most here may not of heard of it.

I think he is now around 90, and he'll still get out and have a ride on one of his many, incredibly special bikes he has in his Museum.

I didn't even thinknof Sammy Miller, agreed. A great one!

Maybe it was a few years ago, but the title says "greatest off road rider ever".

Doug Henry's resume:

1993 and 1994 AMA 125 MX champ

1993 AMA 125 East SX champ

1998 AMA 250 MX champ

250 SX winner

Supermoto winner

GNCC winner ( held off Juha Salminen for the win)

Multi time X games winner

Snowcross winner

Multi time adaptive class winner on bike and sled

Clearly, and without a doubt, the best rider in tha widest variety of disciplines ever. End of story.

I present to you Ty Davis....

125 Supercross Champion

National Enduro Champion

National Hare Scrambles Champion

National Hare and Hound Champion

WORCS Champion

Multi Time ISDE Gold Medalist

ZipTy is the only racer to win an AMA National Championship in all off road disciplines... hare scramble, enduro and hare and hound.

Doug Henry did one GNCC, in the sand no less, hardly qualifies him as the "the best rider in the widest variety of disciplines".  Not trying to be a hater, he's honestly probably my favorite racer of all time.

Was Ty cheating when he won supercrosses, what the hell?

Malcolm is overrated as a racer. Ron Bishop whooped his ass on numerous occasions.

Great ambassador for the sport, but not the best of the best back then.

Malcom  earned ISDT 8 gold metals, competed in trials and many other types of motorcycle disciplines. I believe Ron competed in 2 ISDT's.
