The 1985 championship was won by Jeff Ward who only won the 8th round in Houston, Jason Anderson and Eli Tomac still have a shot!

Unless he has an injury or one or more DNF's, Jett will prevail.

94 is looking good if Jett goes down.

3 and 21 will both win a round.

And the list is missing Rick Johnson, Ward, and Bailey!

So if this is one of the most stacked fields ever... when its all said an done at the end of the season... Does the winner of this years SX championship hold more weight then previous title winners?

and what headlines do we see for this years 2024 champ?

Good questions. For the first question, I would say no, it doesn’t hold more weight than previous titles. You race in your era.

Question number two is to be determined. We’re lucky enough to see it happen live.

Go Triumph!

I would say that it depends on what transpires over the course of the season that will determine how the results are viewed in future.

If 8 of the 10 fastest are lost to injuries in the next 2 rounds and there's a significant difference between the 2 remaining contenders, then I'd say it won't be respected as much as if everyone stays healthy and it's a knock-down drag-out every weekend.

One thing that does seem to be more common now than in the '80's is how important the start is in determining the winner (hence startercross) and I think two things contribute to it more than others: 4-strokes and standardized tracks/obstacles. The bikes are easier to ride, therefore the riders make less mistakes that allow passing opportunities for competitors and the tracks in the '80's didn't have the standardized obstacles that allow the factories to build virtual replica practice tracks so the team riders can work on shaving a few hundredths of a second off here and there. The '80's tracks were much more random and sketchy in their designs, in general.

Yeah we should be comparing top tens because the mid eighties truly had a lot of name recognition throughout.

Imho no. Each year is it's own animal and in my book there is never an asterisk whether it was a stacked field or 19 guys chasing MC Wink

If a poster's favorite rider wins, it was a stacked field, if they lose, the field was depleted due to undisclosed injuries, or unfair AMA penalties or lack of AMA penalties.

If you ask @Magoofan that was due to MXA.

It would be amazing to see Roczen win the championship. God knows he's been swinging the bat for a LONG time!

Cooper Webb. Dallas is always good to him, he gets it back on track this weekend.

You might be right. Tomac going back to back. Historically the first back to back winner is usually the champion.

I agree the vet classes 30a, 40a, 45+,50+ @ Aztalan are stacked.  Mostly x Profeshenals . Payouts better than a Canadian national. The 125 class is stacked too , riders in the top 5 at big am races.
