Hunter Lawrence?

Edited Date/Time 2/5/2024 3:40am

Some folks around here were predicting 1-2 finishes for the Lawrence Brothers in SX.  Some even speculated that Hunter is the better SX rider of the two.  So far, Hunter sits 10th in points, two spots behind privateer Dylan Ferrandis.  His best finish of the year is 7th.  This would have sounded like blasphemy prior to the season opener in Anaheim, but does Hunter score a SX podium this year?

Poll

Does Hunter end up on a SX podium in ‘24?

I will admit I expected more of him but he has time to turn it around.

He doesn’t seem like the kind of rider who would instantly have great results right away, more like he needs to work towards it. He’s been like that his whole career?

I said no. But I'd like to see him get a couple more dry regular sx mains under his belt and see how he goes. Definitely underwhelming this year

Well he did miss a round, so to sit in tenth after missing a round isn't to bad, I would think he would get better, guess we'll find out.

The top 10 in 450 have all won or easily capable of a 250 tittle, it’s nothing compared to the 450 class, guys like Wilson and Barcia etc won 250 easy as but have struggled. Hunter will improve all season and next year as well, Jett is a fast learner but has had to go back to new lessons to fix problems.

Are you talking about the main that he failed to qualify for? That would be another strike against him, not something to give him credit for.

Especially when the one he missed wasn't one of the shit show mudders. You could almost excuse him if he didn't qualify for one of those

I thought Hunter would have had better results, but it appears after a horrible debut at A1, he’s settled for the long slow build.

He will land on the podium. He’s building. He has some top 10s under his belt. I expect him to land on the podium at least once before the year is over.

Excellent post. Was wondering this myself as I was challenged before the season started when I questioned the push that was being made to say he was going to be near the front. Yeah he won a 250 title but it was no where near a title to say he would muscle in with the current 450 guys. I just don’t see Hunter as being “all that” and is riding around right where I thought he would be. Thumbs down me but it is what it is. No coulda, woulda shoulda in this game.

If he gets a start, he could possibly land on the podium under ideal conditions. JMO.

Unfortunately at some stage in their careers there have been quite a few of the top guys not make mains before, Villapoto is one that comes to mind, sometimes shit happens.

When Ando skipped the whoops last weekend, I absolutely said in my head "he took the Huntah line!"

I was expecting more out of him before the series began. I gave him a yes vote on the pole, he seems like a very smart rider who is staying within his limits. When he’s more comfortable I’m thinking he well be getting into the top 5 with an occasional podium. At least he’s not crashing his brains out trying to get up front. He and Justin Cooper should both improve as the series moves along

I was thinking he was gonna be more 'up there' but I'm sure life comes at ya pretty fast in the top ten of a 450 SX main haha so I expect his results to get better and better once he feels more comfortable

You can see that he rides a little hesitant - evidenced this weekend in the heat. Had a great start, but just didn't have that raw intensity or speed that the front few did. A great finish position nonetheless, but 15+ seconds off at the end. Don't often see him hanging it out or out of control, which could be to his detriment, almost like he's too in control.

Could argue that he looked better in Paris.

Have seen him hang it out when needed, and his raw speed can be stupid fast. Think back to Tampa (I think?) last year where he absolutely sent it into the whoops a few times, and took 7 seconds out of Thrasher in 2 laps to steal the win.

I don't like him. But he will end up in the podium this year. I hope Justin Cooper also lands there.

If he's been hurt since a1 than maybe, if he's been healthy this whole time then no, that said like always anything can happen.

Probably not as sharp as I was expecting, however, the guys in front are no joke. Would be good to see him with a start

In some races he's finished ahead of Eli Tomac, Chase Sexton, Cooper Webb, Jason Anderson, Ken Roczen, and Justin Barcia, who have all had podium race finishes this year.

I'm no Hunter fan, but all we hear is "deep field" and then we're surprised a guy in his rookie 450 season isn't top 5? 🤷

Besides losing his shit in that LCQ, he's been in front of both factory Husky's hasn't he? Both with experienced guys on them... I appreciate that isn't a great yard stick right now, but still.

I get that he's not off to a flying start and some were maybe a bit optimistic, but it's probably better than going balls out and smashing himself to bits?

I was expecting 7-8s.

After Paris pp were hyping him. But u could tell his paces was slightly behind Kenny. The only reason he beat him was he started infront.

I expected it to be chase eli and jett. Then Kenny, then ando, Hunter, webb, ap, bam 5-9 with some mookie in there.

Webb and ap have far exceeded my expectations. Hunter and eli a couple spots off. The rest pretty much what I expected but Kenny and mookie have been so inconsistent.

He will get there. Good on a 450 in MX but I guess theres more to handle indoors. His spray it 250 riding style worked for SX, but the 450 needs more finesse and maybe he is still working that out?

Remembering back to when he hobbled away from the camera with his wife helping him walk, with the back injury that had him pulling out of an SMX championship.

Injuries like that are no joke.

And take longer to fully heal than the short off season these guys have.

He's doing just fine right now.
