All the preseason laps, all the training, all the heat races and lcq for gate pick choice for it to not matter anyway.

6 seconds into the race half the field down.

Some high quality shit right there.

literally a roll of the dice every start if anyone makes it thru.

i love races that are over before the second turn, time and time again.

What’s your solution? Grid start like it’s F1?

To start with (omg i had to) How about a longer start and a 180 first turn.

If they want to come up with silly rules about a 9 whoop max, maybe they should put down some about a minimum start straight length and some sensible guidelines for first turns.

A gridded start would make for terrible racing.

Drop two gates (20 rider mains) and space them out a bit more. Riders in positions 20-22 are almost always just rolling around anyway - sometimes getting lapped twice.

You know you’ll have that every time we have a left hand first turn….

A 180 first turn means the start straight would need to be taking up too much of the stadiums footprint and cause massive track lane issues

I agree with banning the metal grates and any “starting aides/devices”.  Get back to the best with throttle and clutch control.  The parity these devices provides increases the risk of pile-ups occurring every time the gate drops.

450’s didn’t seem to have a problem with the same start.

Just an observation on the data collected.

One big thing is the bottle neck effect. Detroit gate had the guys on the inside having to drift to the right down the straight.

These pileups happen when the arrow head forms to quickly.

Simply, more space is required in first turns.

What’s a longer start going to do, it’s all about jump.  A longer straight isn’t going to save you from a bad jump, if you got a good jump you’ll have an even better start since you’ll be able to stretch it out more.  90° starts just don’t allow people to slip up the inside like a 180, it’s more so the first corner, not the steel grate or length of the straight.

Never have understood why they added two riders to the 450 main.

It's also resulted in the point system being all screwy which has even spilled over into the abomination of 21st in outdoor MX now getting a point.

Its dumb to have a start where half the riders end up on the floor, but half of that is on the riders, we rarely see stuff like that in the 450 class, its a 250 thing, down to the fact that they all want to win it in the first turn.

I know half a bike out of the gate where i am, off the start, and 2 bike lengths in, you know if you are in the race, or just getting round the turn without crashing,

This is down to riders spending too much time 'busting out laps' , and not enough time getting gate drops.

And if you think starting in rows would be be better, watch MotoGP.

We have rowed starts in Supermoto, and at our big race in Mettet, we have 12 rows of 4, where every row is trying to get the holeshot on their own row, and get through the row in front.  There is always some nimrod that thinks he can holeshot from row 3, and one you are in deep, its skittles , where you have 30+ guys still to come.

And how would you do it ? 4 gates

Its a dumb idea, it just needs a decent start laying out every time, which is easy, yet we have seen 2 of these already in 5 rounds.

If there was a bad injury , the first thing an investigator would want to know is ' why are you going straight at a wall. '

The take home from this thread is simple.

Left hand first turns are bad. Maybe because most people are right handed.

Right hand first turns are bad, because you can’t use your brake.

So obviously the “turn” needs to be taken out of the first turn.

And 250’s are too unpredictable to use to start a race. 450’s much better.

Short start straights are bad. Not sure why.

Long start straights are bad. Riders go too fast.

So we need 450’s on a not too long, not to short start straight with no first turn in it.

This will solve the problem.

45 minute moto’s for supercross, motocross and stupidcross.
That will sort the men from the boys.

and traction control.

Traction control was illegal before all the bikes got all the electronics they have today.  Now it's tuned right in.

Make the start straights deep sand. No start devices, no rpm lights, no traction control. Let them get squirrely before they get going very fast.

Put a wall jump in immediately after the gate.

Also agree.    Any "rider aid" should be eliminated.     It's gotten rediculous.

Try looking at more than 1 race. It may be great for TV when all the riders hit the turn at the same time but that is something Motocross was never about and is leading to catastrophe.

Combine that with cookie cutter tracks where a dozen riders are on the same second and you have startercross to be sure.
