Looking to get the wife a bike to do some light trail riding with me. The dealer said it would be perfect for her since she is a new rider. She knows how to ride a motorcycle but is a bit timid in the dirt. She is 5’11 and about 135lbs. Is this a good bike for a beginner just looking to get out or is there something more suitable. She did sit on a 230 and she said she felt cramped. Any advice and or experience would be great as I have never rode one and don’t know anyone who has one.

My partner Anna is a pro mountain biker and a NETRA B rider for hare scrambles and enduro (she's overall podium'd C Class races with over 150 people in them). She's 5'3" and 120lbs-ish. She really, really did not like her 2023 Husqvarna 150i. The things are just very hard to ride if hills are involved, and we got lots of them. 150's have a ton of power, just none where it's easy to use.

While far from a beginner I think a 250 with a wide open powervalve (no hit) just makes more sense. Not an issue for new people, but she also found the 150i had a lot of head shake we just couldn't tune out.

That being said she runs a 150SX at the MX track. She's faster on a 250F but meh.

Last ride I was out on I saw several gals on Beta Xtrainers, they looked pretty cool. Slightly smaller frame overall, torquey motor. I know people have been frustrated with TPI bikes, myself included.

It is literally the perfect bike for what you are describing, my wife has a 2018 150XC-W. She is 5'9 and the height was never really an issue for her we did respring it for her weight so keep that in mind if she sits on a stock bike it will feel pretty tall but with the correct springs when it sags it feels much better.

She had rode pit bikes before so knew how to ride she had a CRF230 for about a year then got the KTM in May this year and already won a couple sprint enduros on it and was feeling very confident until she tore her ACL last month but she'll be back Sad

We are currently selling the Husky 150i we got for my better half.  The 150 just requires to much riding input for it to be fun for her.  She actually prefers my 450 EXC and rides that almost exclusively.  We will be getting her a 350.

125/150 can be pretty tough for new riders to get a hang of, especially in hilly terrain.

I’d go for something more like a crf250x/rx, wr250, 250xcf, good torque and can be short shifted, very versatile bikes. KDX200 if willing to get something a bit older.

We are going to go to the Honda dealership to sit on the 250rx. I personally think she will like it better as she can just twist the throttle rather than dick around with the clutch when going up hills and what not.

Unless you have some huge hill climbs or something the 150 does just fine up hills the XCW is quite a bit different than a SX. The newer four strokes are very herky off idle and low speeds shes rode my 350 and hated that feeling. Also even a 250F is going to be 20+ lbs heavier than a 150 and feel even heavier than that.

This is where electric will be a game changer in the future and even is now if she isn't going to be riding for 3 hours.  Nothing like being able to program how much power and when it comes on and to what extent

I myself despise the 250F for slower trail riding. Like tight single track. Constant clutch work and off idle snap that 4 strokes can have. Double wide/flowing single track, doesn't bother me. Its just when it gets slow I prefer a 2 stroke. Love my 125sx for both moto and trail. However not a beginner rider

Beta X-Trainer all the way for a new female rider. Power is super linear and is a tractor. 15% smaller than the 150XCW. My kid has a 150XCW and it is fun to ride but can be a hand full when you get into the meat of the power. A few of my riding buddy's wives have Trainers. They are fun to ride and fantastic in the woods.

I rented one in Moab earlier this year and it would be a great bike for singletrack. Its only downfall was riding on roads or trails where the speeds were above 40 for extended periods. I owned a XC250 TPI bike that I sold because I could never get it to run really clean. The 150 seemed much better and had pretty much the same low end that the 250 had.

My wife rides an xcfw350 lowered with a recluse, loves it. Xtrainers aren't so great on two track or forest roads, vibrate, no fuel range, shit seat.

The Beta e bike would be a better first time dirt bike.

KTM has a few XCW150 leftovers, maybe that is why the dealer said it would be perfect?

I think it would be a great bike for her. Every bike has its strong and weak points.

5'11" and 135?  That's dang cool.

My girlfriend liked her 150sx a lot for the track, but enduro/offroad wise, most of the fast girls over this side of the pond (UK, lots of mud, roots and hills) seem to be on 300's just like the dudes are or occasional 250F's, but of course by that point they are experienced and bike fit from constant riding and all that.

I can see a 150 XC/EXC/XCW or whatever else they call them being good fun and a great choice (with the lower gearing and smoother delivery) if she's a little timid or a beginner, or if it's the other end of the spectrum and she's fearless and you're concerned she might deck herself hard with more power 😂

There's a guy on YouTube who looks an average rider and rides a 150 tpi bike off road for trails and stuff and he rates it. I think he has a video called 'is a 150 enough?' or something similar which could be worth a quick look.

I sold my 2021 150 XCW-TPI to a guy who bought it for his wife who is 5'5".  Perfect bike for her: light, nimble, very easy to ride, no kickstart.  For me personally, my new 300 is much easier to ride.  But for a beginner, the 150 is perfect.

I was running through the neighborhood last week and a guy had a !!!300!!! Beta XTrainer out front, so I ran over there to look at it.  The guy was maybe 5'2" and it looked perfect for someone that small.  My GF-Partner-Wife is also 5'11" and she needs a big bike.  The XTrainer would be too small for her.

My wifes 2018 has a Lectron and the $150 RK Tek head insert and the difference is night and day so I would certainly recommend that no matter what generation you get. The head gives it such a smooth transfer of lugging to on the pipe and you can just stay in that sweet spot lugging in apex of corners then scream it on corner exit plus for hills and technical stuff its perfect.

This is a super common mod for the XCW 150s and makes a huge difference. I rode a 2024 150 XCW last weekend and the TBI did feel very smooth down low but felt like it was either down low smooth lugging or screaming and ready to shift didn't really have much of that sweet spot meat of the power you need for woods riding especially when its slick.
