What begins?  Dirt bikes have been breaking down for 100 years....

See "Grenaded GasGas 2 stroke" thread for another example.

That recently posted cracked case with the linkage hanging underneath was pretty impressive, disaster style...

These things are definitely too powerful for their own good.

Now you can experience the "electric problem" DNF just like the factory guys do.

Do You think that the entire bike is junk? From some melted connectors? While yes it could have been serious and started a fire. It also might be isolated to a small section of a wire harness and could have been a loose pin in the plug that  caused an arc and heat as a result.  I have not slept much the past few days, almost no sleep last night so I am a little loopy. And not awake enough to look and see if Stark as a diagram showing what those wires go to. Hopefully the damage is very isolated.

Bummer to see some people excited and celebrating a fellow rider having issues with their bike.

At least it is a real issue  and not some delusion or made up conspiracy thing being talked about now.   How about that Gasgas that blew the head apart? Crazy to see a 2 stroke that is normally reliable blow itself apart to that degree. $4K to fix a blown up 2 stroke. That was crazy to see. Glad he did not get hurt with it blowing up in the air like that.

A Letter to the President

Dear Mr. President,

We are auto dealers from across the country who collectively sell every major brand in the U.S. We are small businesses employing thousands of Americans. We are deeply committed to the customers we serve and the communities where we operate, which is why we are asking you to slow down your proposed regulations mandating battery electric vehicle (BEV) production and distribution.

Your Administration has proposed regulations that would essentially mandate a dramatic shift to battery electric vehicles (BEVs), increasing year after year until 2032, when two out of every three vehicles sold in America would have to be battery electric.

Currently, there are many excellent battery electric vehicles available for consumers to purchase. These vehicles are ideal for many people, and we believe their appeal will grow over time. The reality, however, is that electric vehicle demand today is not keeping up with the large influx of BEVs arriving at our dealerships prompted by the current regulations. BEVs are stacking up on our lots.

Last year, there was a lot of hope and hype about EVs. Early adopters formed an initial line and were ready to buy these vehicles as soon as we had them to sell. But that enthusiasm has stalled. Today, the supply of unsold BEVs is surging, as they are not selling nearly as fast as they are arriving at our dealerships -- even with deep price cuts, manufacturer incentives, and generous government incentives.

While the goals of the regulations are admirable, they require consumer acceptance to become a reality. With each passing day, it becomes more apparent that this attempted electric vehicle mandate is unrealistic based on current and forecasted customer demand. Already, electric vehicles are stacking up on our lots which is our best indicator of customer demand in the marketplace.

Mr. President, no government agency, no think tank, and no polling firm knows more about the automobile customer than us. We talk to customers every day. As retail automotive dealerships, we are agnostic as to what we sell. Our business is to provide customers with vehicles that meet the needs of their budgets and lifestyles.

Some customers are in the market for electric vehicles, and we are thrilled to sell them. But the majority of customers are simply not ready to make the change. They are concerned about BEVs being unaffordable. Many do not have garages for home charging or easy access to public charging stations. Customers are also concerned about the loss of driving range in cold or hot weather. Some have long daily commutes and don’t have the extra time to charge the battery. Truck buyers are especially put off by the dramatic loss of range when towing. Today’s current technology is not adequate to support the needs of the majority of our consumers.

Many of these challenges can and will be addressed by our manufacturers, but many of these challenges are outside of their control. Reliable charging networks, electric grid stability, sourcing of materials, and many other issues need time to resolve. And finally, many people just want to make their own choice about what vehicle is right for them.

Mr. President, it is time to tap the brakes on the unrealistic government electric vehicle mandate. Allow time for the battery technology to advance. Allow time to make BEVs more affordable. Allow time to develop domestic sources for the minerals to make batteries. Allow time for the charging infrastructure to be built and prove reliable. And most of all, allow time for the American consumer to get comfortable with the technology and make the choice to buy an electric vehicle.

Sincerely,
Supporting Dealerships

Thanks man for recognizing that.      Just because I don't care for the product doesn't mean I want to see people have issues or get burned.     I had to go back and see what you were responding to because there are a few members who I scroll right past without reading.    Wet Blanket being one of them.

I've seen crimping connectors fail like this before, through either a bad crimp, pin not fully inserted into connector, or a short downstream causing excessive current flow through the connector.

It looks like the connector behind the front number plate..

The only thing in that area that would normally draw any current would be the wireless charger for the phone.

To me it looks like something shorted and used the connector as a fuse but I am not an expert.

Just curious when does your Varg arrive, and what type of riding do you do with that bike in your profile pic?

Part of the marketing strategy of EV's is for the rest of the vehicle to last just long enough for a battery to run out. The cost of battery replacement being prohibitive to time/market value allowing for the sale of a new unit as replacement. It surely has to effect used values as market saturation becomes an issue.

Don't give a shit about cars, EV or ICE, though it's nice to see you quote a reliable source.

For more context here are some more infos from the article you quoted and CR article itself available here https://www.consumerreports.org/media-room/press-releases/2023/11/elect…

Take this coming from the guy leading the study:

“This story is really one of growing pains,” said Jake Fisher, senior director of auto testing at Consumer Reports. “It’s a story of just working out the bugs and the kinks of new technology.”

This is clearly backed up by the difference in reliability between ICE and EV fast diminishing from 80% down to 21% for 2023 model year.

From CR study:

"Tesla Motors, the market leader in EV sales, continues to have issues with body hardware, paint and trim, and climate system on its models, but are not as problematic for motor, charging, and battery. Some EV models from other manufacturers had fewer reported problems related to build quality, but higher rates of powertrain, battery and charging issues. This suggests that legacy automakers need more time to work out the kinks under the hood of their EVs, while Tesla faces above the hood issues."

I have no love lost for Tesla but it's an experienced manufacturer of EV, as a matter of fact, Tesla are middle of the pack in reliability, ranking 14th out of 30, ahead of Jeep, Volkswagen, Nissan, Audi, Mercedes and Chrysler to name a few.

In fact Tesla are the second most reliable american brand (behind Buick in 12th).

Not that this has anything to do with dirtbikes or Stark reliability, so Maverick, how about opening an electric cars category for Magoo who seems so passionate about it?

BMW's are reliability nightmares. I wouldn't put much faith in this survey.
