I liked that whole Mc episode.

Gypsy seems friendly and clearly resonates with a lot of folks, riders included. He clearly doesn't seem to have the journalism chops of many of his other contemporaries but his enthusiasm and engagement draws me in. People who interrupt with personal anecdotes have never bothered me though - it just feels like their attempt to draw parallels with what they know and show that what the other person is saying is landing. I definitely can't fault people for not being able to stand him though. There are few criticisms of him that I feel are unwarranted, and I think that if he were to polish up his language/profanity and reign in the personal anecdotes (which seem to have trended towards less frequent) he has the potential to significantly increase his viewership.

I'd love to see his data analytics to see what his viewership demographics are and what his retention rates look like on his full length videos look like.

About your second take with the journalism thing, he was in the media during the SMX Finals for example and asked by far the best and most interesting questions.
He definitely is a smart guy and a big fan of a sport, but he seems to exaggerate all this bro, sick and fuck thing. A little less of it and I think he could attract even more listeners.

But yeah, I don't think he is as bad as some people state, some of his podcasts and guests are awesome and he is the only one currently that delivers this kind of content on a consistent basis. Also big plus to this podcasts for not getting interrupted by commercials permanently.

I can barely stand listening to him or his podcast, but I have to admit he is different than a lot of other podcasters. The only thing I wish he would change is constant interruptions. Just let the guest talk! Please!

Funny enough I just got back on the computer to edit that comment because after thinking about it, I didn't really agree with my own words. I don't really know much about his chops as a journalist and he seems to excel in the one format that I've observed him in (stylistic criticism aside). I'll leave it unedited your anecdote doesn't lose context since I thought it was a good point.

Yes, the 'bro, sick, fuck' stuff is tiresome, but he tends to dial it up or down depending on the guest.  He didn't use a single 'fuck' when he had Canard on the show.  In general, I agree with all the positive comments on here about his show.

$2M 30 years ago is the same as $4M now, inflation at work!

Yeah but that’s Mc’s best year… all in. The $4m number is what a guy like ET is guaranteed just to show up. His all in is closer to $7-9m.

Nowadays a guy like Jett can clear 7 figures easily just in merch sales. Times have changed

Huh? Seven figures in merch sales? I'd need more proof on that.

Easily.

Butteryfilms makes 7 figured in merch sales. Jett and Deegan are raking in merch $$.

If you need proof you don’t understand the power of marketing. Merch is everything. Why do you think everyone is jumping on the bandwagon… for an extra $100k a year? Absolutely not.

Lmao your jaw would drop. But keep believing whatever you’d like to believe.

And on ET… last year;

2 championships = $2m

Salary = roughly $3.5m

win bonus = 12 wins at $130k each = $1.5m

Oakley = $250k

Gear = $500k

Bell = $250k

At the lowest $8,000,000

This doesn’t count heat win bonuses, moto win bonuses, etc  and is leaving out tons of other forms of $$. Even purse $ adds up

Maybe not in merch directly.  In the interview he did with ESPN he touched on a couple of side business/merch things that added up to about 7 figures.

I think these guys get paid to be on the shows in a way.  But not how most people think.  I think an interviewer or podcaster can sometimes lean on the athletes sponsor to get them on the show.  This usually happens when they win or something.  If the said podcaster uses this method to much the athletes will avoid them and so on.

In the case of someone like Ryno or older retired riders, I think it can be a couple reasons.  First, maybe they are doing training or selling something.  They don't get dollars but get publicity.    The other might be a need or want to stay relevant in the sport or in the fans eyes.   JMO

"If you need proof you don't understand the power of marketing." So you're just pulling it out of your ass. Yes some proof would help especially that Buttery is making 7 figures on merch

If you think Buttery is making 7 figures selling merch.... you don't understand well.... much.

Did a quick search....Buttery charges $65 for a hoodie.  Doing some simple math, he would need to sell over 15,000 hoodies just to GROSS 7 figures.  Gross, not net.

Do you really think Buttery is selling more than 15k hoodies a year?

I can't say that I've ever even seen Buttery merch in person and I spend at least 2 weekends a month at some sort of dirt bike event or riding area.

You THINK he doesn't. Only one of us actually has insight on it. Which is why I won't waste my time.

One of my life goals is to casually run into Grant Langston and give him a "G'day Mate!" It would be hilarious.

I think Buttery is probably doing well. I feel like I see some of his merch every time I'm at the track. Granted, it's not worn by people my age, but sometimes you'll see a dad in one of his tees. When the weather got cooler you'd see kids riding with sweatshirts over jerseys.

No he was being an idiot trying to lean in with the typical Aussie anti-American sentiment that has flooded this place, not realizing he was addressing a Canadian
