In my many times in Switzerland *, I've been constantly reminded by my friends and colleagues, that the German I hear them speaking, is "High German".

Not that I know but a few words in German, or, indeed, "High German".

My tactic, wherever I go, is to learn a few , well, quite a few if my Bear Brain can fit them in, Words and phrases in the languages that I expect to encounter. Deliver them with a smile, and  with the addition that I'm a dopey old monolingual Australian, and I get by swimmingly, wherever I am. People, for the vast part, are so patient, accommodating and helpful. And, contrary to what so many whinge about, I have No difficulty with The French..........

Someone wrote above that they are surprised with Euros knowing a couple of languages - cripes, I've been at tables where it's a merry go round of near  a dozen. It's incredible to see and hear.  For my part, I like to entertain others with Aussie slang, idiom, and use of The Language Of The Gods : 'Strine!

And, that the Euros generally speak better , well, 'correct' English than most 'native' speakers makes things pretty bloody easy over there.

By the 'CH', I'm assuming you are Swiss, crusty_xx

PS : Ken really does seem to speak really rapid fire in his native German! He sounds like so many Aussies with English - we are often criticized for speaking too bloody quickly.

A good friend of my wife is Swiss. Over the course of an evening with this guy, he had separate conversations going in English, Japanese and German all at the same time – and we were drinking. He was also translating the German and English conversations to his Japanese wife throughout the night.

When I hear him speak German like that, I think  he still speaks German regularly. When you have lived abroad for so long, you always get something of an accent and sometimes you can no longer think of the right words.

But I often have the feeling that talking with an accent when you live abroad for a few years, certain guys do it to attract a little attention.

I can almost understand what he's saying, but he's speaking too quickly. I don't speak German very well, but I did take one semester in college and my family has German heritage. That language has a familiarity and a homecoming to it. Little phrases pop out, like when he says "for me," or "the people." Man, I should take some more lessons.

I am just happy that I don‘t need to learn German as a foreign language.

^Dude, it's better than Japanese. They basically have three different languages, depending on who you are talking to or about. Shocked

Key take aways:

Him being able to run whatever parts he needs on his bike (specially different suspensions) which wasn't possible before on any team. He basically said "If I wanted a horn on my bike, they would install it for me".

Overall being more healthy and fit in general, which results into having more fun than ever right now.

Him not feeling healthy and confident was one of the main reasons he didn't attend the MXON over the last years apparently.

Plus this years WSX rounds not happening allowing him to participate at the MXON even though they got their second kid just now.

Yes, there many things, it was a long interview and we could add much more. Wink

Ha, we've got dialects in different areas (in Germany) also. The German I was exposed to when I was a kid, very different from hochdeusch. But I get in certain areas of the states and have no clue what they are saying here also.

Japanese isn't that bad. There's regional accents and there's different slang in different areas, but the language is still the same. The only one that's actually different is Okinawan, and that's only because they didn't even consider themselves Japanese until relatively recently.

Pretty sure Falcon is talking about Keigo, honorific speech differences.

You will not be getting laughs from the Dutchman. I think they take things quite literal, especially conversing in a foreign language.
