Loved the racing today, definitely nice to see chase and shimoda win, and seeing kenny lead was awesome. I think smx is a cool concept and its nice seeing the sport innovating. One area where I think they need to keep on innovating is with the split screen. They seem to be using it wayy too much now. They didnt used to use it sooo much in the past, only when two important things were happening at the same time, but it seems like over the last year it has changed to where it is now half of the race. I understand theres a lot of things happening at once on an mx/sx track and they want to try to show those things, but I think its having a detrimental effect on the viewing experience. Instead of making it so you can pay attention to two things at once it feels like the screens are so small sometimes it makes it so its hard to pay attention to either.
If theyre dead set on doing it maybe instead of having the pole position off to the left in its own box, then two other small boxes on the screen with racing in them, maybe they could have a line across the entire middle of the screen with one full screen battle on top and one full screen battle going on on bottom. Then they could just have the rider positions scrolling sideways across the top of the screen taking up minimal space. The way it is now the box with rider positions in it is huge and is in its own separate box off to the left taking up half the screen. Its definitely important to be able to keep track, but it shouldnt take up soooo much room on the screen. If they could try something like that maybe it would make it work out a lot better.
Why can’t people just be happy we can watch every race live…
The main battle should be full screen and any other battle they show should be a way smaller box off to one side.
They should take a page from the MotoGP playbook. Not only is the second angle off to the side, they place it over the list in the position that the rider is in.
The coverage is the best its ever been but nothing wrong with a little constructive criticism.
The split screen drone cam is the absolute worst (from MX). They were showing two ends of the same battle today on split screen and it was unnecessary.

Man I am just not a fan of the split screen staying on for minutes at a time. I catch myself no longer watching the race anymore and just listening.
yep.
Exactly I think its 98.5% of the way there, the split screen just needs a little bit of improvement if theyre going to use it as much as they do now. If nobody says anything then things wont get changed. I mentioned in the original post the racing was great tonight and its an exciting series that Im fully behind. Theyre just always trying to get better and push the sport forward and this is one those things that could get a few % better. No hate or complaining as he said just a little constructive criticism.
We all want the sport to grow and reach as many ppl as possible and the tv show is a huge part of that. If a small tweak can make it easier to follow on tv then thats good for everyone.
Being bored to tears I started to comment/post on the split screen. I would be watching the top split screen and RC would be talking about the bottom screen. By the time I figured out he wasn’t talking the top screen I’d look at the bottom and they would change to another screen or camera angle. I’m kinda like the comment above, might as well listen to it. In my simple cowboy logic mind. You can only talk about one screen at a time and I for whatever reason I seem watch the top screen. My TV at my lake place is only 50 inches. I think the split screen would be easier to keep up on big 75 inch TV.
it’s still better than no racing at all, I probably shouldn’t complain.
Can't stand how much they use it. I think split screen is okay for a quick replay of a pass or crash that just happened but to use it constantly like they do is very distracting and it brings down the overall quality of the broadcast.
It was even more infuriating during outdoors when there would be good racing going on in 250s and they would cut to that POS "Thor Battle Box" to show a 450 guy putting on his helmet.
Because it's 2023 and we're all paying subscription fees for the coverage - coverage which is very often woefully bad compared to other sports.
The split screen drone shots were so busy you could barely make out what was happening. The drone was making me nauseous as well.
I can only watch one at a time. Total waste. Make it interactive, with 20 cams on each rider 100% of the time. User choice, and switchable on demand, with replay and slo-mo too. Isn't this the 21st century?
The split screen is now sponsored so even if it’s not needed they will use it. I think the split screen needs to be redesigned. When you go split screen remove the scoring tower thing for example and make the two screens a similar size. Start from a blank page and design it from scratch.
I'm a International viewer with a Video Pass subscription. Yesterday was the first time this year that my stream sucked balls. It kept stopping to buffer throughout. I was not streaming live but was I estimate about a hour behind the live feed.
The first 250 moto was just about bearable, then I reallt struggled with 450 moto 1. It got so bad that I called it quits and still have not watched the 2nd motos.
My fiber line is good. 150 up and down. Netflix and all the other shit we have streamed perfect.
I'm was and still am pissed. The split screen appears to often and stays to long. As Warren above said, a quick split screen for a pass elsewhere will be great.
The drone is ok I guess but in moderation....with "moderation" being the operative word here...something the producers still have yet to understand.
I'll log in later to see if I can watch a couple of motos and hopefully the feed /stream will be better.
I think the drone worked decent enough out doors but I was getting motion sick today. It was just too much back and forth left and right through the tight confines on the track layout. X32 on the split screens, RC saying SMX world championship over and over, and weege commentating like he is talking to children about what a rhythm lane is and SX vs MX… they wouldn’t even acknowledge Vialles 2 -MX2 world championships because we are too stupid to know there are other MX championships in the world other than SUPER DUPER MOTORCROSS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP!!!
Yea its near impossible for humans to pay attention to two different things happening at the same time. So when the split screen happens you have to pick one or the other if you want to pay attention, or try to look up and down a lot and get bits and pieces from each. They should just focus on one battle/storyline at a time for the majority of the race and only use the split screen when two cant miss battles are happening at the same time. Only use it when absolutely necessary, not half the race. Then when they do use it they can use the full screen.
Agreed the Split screen was no good yesterday. It shrunk each screen so much you couldn't see what was happening on either screen. Either make it in the corner like PiP or limit the use to no more than 1 minute at time. Nothing that exciting was happening that we had to have it split for half the race.
Or just create a Jett cam that is always in the corner since that is all the annoucners cared about.
We need to stop calling it a split screen and call it what it was on Saturday, a Lawrence brother screen.
Following Hunter around in ninth was a bit irritating.
Pit Row
I have a 85" samsung TV and sit 14 feet back from the TV and I want the whole screen filled. When they do the split screen and with the background its like watching two 27" screens, really sucks. Looks like motoGP has it figured out
Dang, I liked it so much better than the battlebox - they just made it fit the whole screen. I think it's the best it can be right now.
Just dump the split screen idea. Bring back the Speed channel style scrolling names, that way I get more viewing space.
I'd assume they're using the split screen so much because when they miss any action, people complain. Kind of a damned if they do, damned if they don't situation.
Because we had that in the early 2000’s and times have changed. Per usual we look like complete idiots as a whole. Sound issues you name it. The broadcast team in FRONT of the camera is awesome. The person calling the shots for the past 15 plus years sucks balls
Watching two small screens most of the broadcast (at least it seemed like most of it) frustrated the heck out of me. Pick a battle and show it and when the lead is shrinking and under 2 seconds I know which battle I want to see.
One caveat, the split screen reduces your actual view by 50%. The damn screens are a foot off the edges in every direction lol. Why can they not change the damn tv format? Make it legitimate and not gimmicky. We look like a snake oil salesman every broadcast
Actually I'm on the positive side of this, I think it was a marked improved over the "Thor battle box". But agreed the action they were following some of the time still wasn't great.
I haven't checked this new one but I used a tape measure to quantify just how freakin stupid the Thor battle box with running order graphic is during the nationals... 31% of the screen is showing the actual racing ... 31%!!! and that's both screens combined!
I mean... how does a TV producer say "yep, looks great, roll it!" Even on a 100" TV it would look like dogs**t.
What pisses me off to no end is the split screen to show an interview!! God all mighty why in the earth do we reduce screen size of live racing to show Jett talking!? Show that dumbass interview during the 20 minute waiting period up to the gate drop.
How many seasons have we harped on this and the broadcast crew are still being silly. JUST SHOW THE RACE during the race.
