Will Jett's dominance carry over into 2024 Supercross?

Supercross has more variables that can cause the "best" rider to not win a race. In moto, the fastest/fittest guy in a given race will usually finish on the top step. There's ~35 minutes to get through the pack if he gets a bad start, less lappers in the way and more space on the track to pass them, and generally less random crashes. It's also easier to get a bad start in SX - an MX start is much longer and wider, so a rider can get a bad jump but take a perfect line into the first corner and find a way to come out near the front. A bad jump in SX almost always leads to a bad position coming out of the first corner.

With all of this, it will be a LOT harder for Jett to dominate (or be perfect) in SX than it was in MX, even if he happens to be the fastest guy every week. The possibility is there, but it's a lot slimmer. There's a reason why Carmichael and Stewart both had perfect outdoor seasons but fell far short in SX.

Supercross is always difficult to adjust to. 17 rounds in 18 weeks is a grind. His style won’t translate quite as well in SX on the 450 as it did in MX. He will still be a top guy and get wins and maybe even the championship.

Yes and no. In all seriousness, I feel if he gets the starts he’s going to be tough to beat, but it won’t be dominance like outdoors.

It is much harder to win an SX race with a 10th place start than an MX race. In 17 tries he is bound to get a couple starts where he is 10s down after the first lap. That doesn't mean he won't win the title or even run away with it.

Disclaimer: I’m by no means a Jett fan boy. As a matter of fact I am a proud tomac fan boy. With that being said, how do you think Jett’s style won’t translate well into supercross. The guys riding is insane to me. I’m not being a smart ass, it’s an honest question

He just finished 22 motos with an average start position of 1.5, and grabbing 11 holeshots.

If he continues to start like that indoors, it's going to be difficult to beat him.

That being said, SX is not the same as MX. The riders are usually closer together, the tracks are tighter, and a simple tip over usually results in getting passed by a few guys.

Looking forward to seeing what he'll do indoors.

He could unless they let Degan race a few 450 races. He would dominate!

Not translating as well doesn’t mean it won’t translate well. It’s just perfect for MX. Smooth. Missing the bumps. Effortless. Etc. That particular type of style isn’t quite as perfect for SX and won’t give him as much of an edge as it does in MX.

What nuances of style would he have to improve upon to be better at SX?

I see that.  I missed everything today but just looked at times and I see Sexton on top and 21 & 94 only a tenth or two off Jett.  Is Jett taking it easy or sandbagging?  We shall find out soon.

It was just free practice…. We’ll have a better look at qualifying tomorrow morning.

I don't know.  I can't see the future. I don't know who will be injured, who has Epstein-Barr, and who is on the mend.  I guess I'll just have to watch the races.

He may very well win the championship, but if the main players manage to stay healthy, it won't be an outdooresque season...I have to think Tomac may have a thing or two to say, not too mention Sexton. No way he goes undefeated in SX.

In all seriousness though if Jett can keep on dominating the starts like he has he's going to be hard to beat indoors. I see him winning most races and taking the championship.

It's going to be a ripper of a season for SX2024 with Eli and Kenny coming back into the mix as well

And…just like Danny…

Jett’s gonna have to contend with the absolutely hardest factor of Supercross…

The Random Chance of the Universe (aka, Shit Happens).

Late in the 1982 race season, Danny beat the odds like no other rider before…or since.

Jett wins the most races in the series but finishes a close second!

Hunter top 5.

He will win races but SX is a different animal. I think a few bad finishes keep him from the championship.

Jett has great starts so he will either dominate out of the gate or get pushed around early and we'll have a fight

1/3/2024 4:27pm

Jett goes 17:0 against a weak field.

In ‘23 Chase was regularly faster than Tomac but couldn’t stay off the ground.

Jett can match Chase’s speed, without falling and likely go faster.

Jett, Chase, Eli is my top three pick.

I can 100% guarantee without any hesitation that Jett Lawarance is going to dominate this year.   In fact his domination is going to increase 100 fold..

Yes, one shots, interviews, featurettes,  commentary from the announcers,  video of him putting on his helmet, giving out donuts, riding down the tunnel to the starting line, drinking water from a Red Bull can, etc, etc, etc.   The over-exposure is going to be like nothing we've ever seen before.

I believe it will. Sexton might have something for him in a few races. As much as I hate to admit it Eli and Ken are probably too old now, this season will be the changing of the guard.
