For everyone in NY, Michigan, and all the areas that get a legit winter, do you all hang it up in the winter months when January hits and it's the coldest part of the year? I live in the FL Panhandle and it was so hot this year that I have to give-in and stop riding from mid-July through the end of August. The heat was just too much.
I was curious if you all up North/NE/NW deal with the same thing in the extreme cold. I imagine you can get by for most of the winter by bundling up but my brother in law is from Michigan and he said it gets to the down to the teens in winter 🥶
About 14 years ago I made the trip up to the then Sandbox in Wisconsin in -20 weather, tires flattened in the trailer and had to use a heat gun to warm the forks up enough to where they'd move once I got indoors. 40 used to be my cutoff for normal riding, but I've ridden outside in 12 degree weather through snow before.
Sand in the winter for me. The ground here gets wet in November and doesn't dry out until April/May. Frozen regular dirt sucks to ride on. It is basically ice.
Funny you post this today when there are heat records being smashed in CT.

Riding off-road with studded tires (grip studs or Mitas studded tires, not ice racing screws) is one of the funnest things you can do on a dirtbike. I was skeptical when I first heard about it, but you have almost as good of traction as dirt.
Rocks you have zero traction, logs you have better traction.
Coldest I would ride is -10 Celsius.
Wear a base layer below your MX gear, cold weather gloves, and maybe a fleece top and you're good to go.
You get that fresh air endorphins of going skiing but MX in the snow.
It's pretty big in Alberta.
9/10 would recommend.
ARC Memlon levers and heated grips make such a difference in the cold. We ride year round and the temps range between 15 degrees to 115 degrees F. Layers are key in the winter and proper ventilation and hydration are key in the warmer months.
I ride down into the 30's, which really is not all that cold. Merino wool base layer and add a vest. Biggest issue is my hands, I use 100% Brisker gloves and wrap my levers with rubber tape so I am not touching bare aluminum.
Honestly, the last couple years we (Michigan) haven't really had a good "Michigan" winter and we have been able to ride sometimes into December. Biggest things for mx is the track owners being able to break up the dirt once it gets cold and the ground starts to freeze. I figure 3 months out of the year isn't that bad for missing riding. During that time I work as much overtime as I can, go to the gym, snowmobile whenever possible, and fix up the race bike. Before you know it the tracks are posting first races and open rides for the year in April. It's a nice break and makes you appreciate riding that much more when the weather is nice. Some guys do ice racing as well, but like I said our winters haven't been great so the lakes haven't been great for that either...
Ha not here it’s 59 now. 10 day forecast has lows of 43-54 at night. I much rather hv hot weather to ride in . I was in Florida mid July ocala , Gainsville & another area. I didn’t think it was that hot. 2nd place I had to run all ovr the property. Then while being loaded I had to sit in a tin shed , that was a little hot. Only in trucking you’ll get tortured like that.
I live in Philadelphia; last winter, you could pretty much ride the entire winter, the sand in NJ stays pretty wet, and you get a decent amount of 40-50 degree days. When it snows, I stay home, but even then, it's mostly just January/February. It does get really hot here, heat index was close to 100, which is my limit, but I still rode yesterday. So, if you are south of Philly, you can get as many rideable days as you are getting now, so long as you are fine with riding when it's 40. Once it's below that, even with the 100 percent Brisker gloves, it's just not fun for me.
North of here, there are some real winters, and I think most people just park it for the winter and take the time to work on their bikes.
I am from Florida and grew up racing there my entire life. Now that work and life has me out in California, I struggle in the humidity. I was back visiting for 2 months in May and June and almost died at Motobros each moto by the first week of June.
I kind of have the life hack now. I live in Tahoe so I have great weather 3 seasons of the year locally to ride. We have a ton of tracks around 1.5 and under drive and in winter you can leave the snowboarding fun and drive 1.5 hour to a track and ride in like 50-60 degree weather.
The politics are ass in this state, but the Moto life ain’t bad for a vet rider.
I’d like to ride in some cold weather, been bad hot summer here in Texas and probably another 4 to 6 weeks of it.
Having lived in the SW and now in the NE - I’d take the heat any day. I don’t even want to think about cold weather (or the short days)
Depressing!
Exactly! I'm in Red Deer. Usually ride 10 to 15 times a season on mitas tires.
I gotta say that the Fly Windproof jerseys and gloves have been a game changer for me. The jerseys are 12/10 I would recommend to anyone riding when it gets below 50°
And wrap hockey tape around your levers helps.
I did a week of riding in the snow in the late 80's early 90's?
We were working cattle at my friend's ranch, and it snowed its ass off.
I stuck my Blazer right away trying to get home for work.
The snow just lifted it off the ground.
So we rode 500s. So much fun, but sucks when you can't see important stuff.
We spent a lot of time digging my shit out of a crevasse that looked like a flat plane.
Snow in Texas on a 500 is fun.
Its fun till you hit the dirt mid January, the dirt doesnt have any give when its frozen. Made me snap my femur clean at the knee. Oh, and laying in the snow for an hour sucked too. Never riding solo in the cold again. Always park the bike end of November.
I can not wait for winter riding. Wet dirt. Temps in the upper 30’s, low 40’s, perfect.
