MXGP Crowds (lack of)

I understand the concept of the flyaways races and the thought of getting these guys in front of different markets. I suppose Turkey is considered one of those? Watching the highlights it looked like there may have been 100 spectators scattered about. Can someone explain why “the premier” series in the world is racing on a makeshift track in a construction site in front of no one? This is not a knock on the GP’s or us vs them but I will say at the nationals, the crowds alone make the it look like the premier series, especially to a new fan.

Still looked like more people than some of the national races this year, especially Pala.

So, uhh, yeah.

Pala is a sorry excuse for a national but still 100x better than any of the fly away GP rounds (unless Argentina is considered a fly away round, that track looks spectacular)

I must agree, the track and crowd looks like a local race here in the states.

What they do is get the local country or region to pay to put on the race for marketing purposes.  Thus, they are getting money just to show up and race no matter if fans show up or not.  Of course, they will tell you they are spreading motocross to the parts of the world that do not have it, however why not go where the fans already are right?  If I wanted to make it the true World Championships, then you must visit the USA.   If you did just hit the USA and EU then yes that works and would be the easiest travel.   However, Canada could be in the mix and if I were to do a flyaway, I would pick Australia.  Imagine if they came over to the US first and hit say Gatorback Mx, and then a place in Texas when the weather is cool.  I am sure some tracks would be willing to partner up, but I do not think the tracks are willing to fork out 500K or whatever it is to get the race.

I don’t know why any of these series like MXGP, WSX arent going to Brazil.

Just look at the comment sections anytime Enzo Lopes is on the screen…

MXGP does some pretty obscure locations around the world. Not sure what was expected in Turkey, but it sounds like the race was run and this round was completed successfully.

Youthstream/FIM doesn’t care that these races don’t have spectators. They have already made their money from the Turkish government, who wants International events to pretend they aren’t a dictatorship, killing Kurds in Syria, imprisoning thousands of journalists, etc, etc, etc. Its a PR stunt.

Youthstream would schedule a North Korean GP with their customary 15 rider classes if the check would clear.

It is pretty crazy they only had 20 on the gate and essentially no attendance.

There was more riders than spectators and there weren't many of them!

To me spectators (aswell as a full gate ) add to the visual ambience , i find it difficult to maintain concentration during these races

They go round the world (with multiple rounds, unlike WSX) so.... yeah, world championship.

I agree the AMA Pro Motocross national championship is the premier series at the moment though, and has been for years in most peoples opinion.

Like British Touring Cars or British Superbike or V8 Supercars in Australia all have been at a time, national championships but the best of their type in the world with competitors from elsewhere.

The only reason for the fly aways is because the big boys running the show are filling up their pockets. They don't give a shit if 10 riders show up. Its sad to see because the european rounds are amazing.

What always surprises me in this forums, is how you guys always fail to realise who’s really running things in global mx.

the main reason MXGP is at these difficult locations is because Honda, Ktm, Kawasaki, Yamaha want them there.

There could be another 10 factory riders at each MxGP if the big 4 didn’t stop the us riders from leaving the states.

It’s all about bike sales in AMA & mxgp. See the bigger picture people.

I get part of what you are saying as far as the influence the manufacturers have on the sport, but the idea that 10 factory US riders want to come race MXGP?  Not a chance!   This year in US Nationals there are about 4 riders who were racing in EU last year right?  Next, year even more come to the US I am sorry to warn you.   The MXGP riders are tired of the BS over there, and some of the top riders have made that clear.  I am a fan of the EU riders and have watched MXGP for 10 years now, so I say that as a fan even.   The crew over there at MXGP does some things very well and other things horribly wrong.

Why is it the premier class, because they have more riders ? The depth of talent in the AMA especially the 450 class is pretty poor, so I don’t see how that can be a premier class. You have 2 fast guys and the rest are running around more than a minute down. I agree the 18-20 riders on the line isn’t a good look, but when the gate drops it makes no difference other than there is less lappers on the track to get in the way.

I wrote a long ass, rambling, largely pointless reply that was probably inaccurate anyway, then the forum lost it 😂

I am sure it's subjective and I can't argue with what you're saying 👍

To me it just 'feels' like the American series is the big deal, even in the UK most people I talk to can name more AMA riders than MXGP riders, they're more clued up and up to date on AMA goings on, I have a couple of mates who actually watch MXGP and many more who watch the AMA races... Even as a kid, I knew full well Everts, Pichon, Tortelli, Beirer, etc were bad dudes and watched them on Eurosport, but all the posters and shit I had were McGrath, Emig, RC, Stew...

It's just my gut feel, uneducated opinion, no numbers or facts to back it up, so you may well be right 👍

I also appreciate this season was not a good supporting argument 😂 At least when Chase and Eli were gapping folks last year, the riders further down still looked like they were awake and trying to make some progress.

I think the US riders are already suffering from burnout and the playoffs will make it worse.

US Supercross is THE show. Everything else is scrambling for crumbs.

As for poor fan attendance, it would seem to me streaming around the world makes live attendance less important. Agree low rider and fan turnout still looks bad.

And the depth of talent in MXGP is so deep?

Give me a break.....85% of the dudes racing MXGP couldn't win the B class at Loretta Lynns.

Tell me you don’t know anything about motocross, without telling me you know anything about motocross 😂😂

Says a lot about your DEPTH when you have guys like Kullas and Butron, plus a couple of other guys Jumping in for a few rounds and going top 10 when they would get know where near that in GPs. You have two fast guys that can win a race. Sexton or Lawrence. You have 10 guys in MXGP capable of wining. Your MX2 class is good, definitely, but your big bike class, not so much.

Yes, that’s because currently speaking the factories pay large amounts to keep the top talent  on us based rides, they could instead add extra bikes into mx GP & then the top us guys  might be tempting to travel a bit more.

Also the MXGP series could be adapted to feature more us rounds etc,  but for some strange reason the ultimate powers that be believe  the growth of our sports is best to divide the talent, which makes both series look weak at times.

EU riders often switch to US when they get aged out or don’t fancy racing the top boys MXGP.

MX2 is a feeder class for both series, but I don’t believe any MX2 champ that 100% believe he could win MXGP would side set to AMA. Vialle is definitely not ready for MXGP.

Says a lot about your knowledge, or lack thereof, when you fail to recognize how many guys were out this Summer with injuries.

Does MXGP have a bunch of guys hurt or is the 20 man field with a bunch of mid-pack quality dudes really what they have to offer?

Those 10 guys who are "capable of winning" a GP would come here and be lucky to get top 5 and pretty good chance they'd get beat down by some privateers in the process.

You see....our talent pool is so deep that we have World Class dudes buying their own bikes to go race.

Hell, Masterpool can't get a paid ride here and he'd be a title threat in the GPs

Oh man, put down your pipe it’s clearly having an impact on your thought process. Go to bed and you might wake up with a clearer head and see things more clearly.
