Does Jett run the #1 at Budds?

The Lawrence bros ran the #1 plates at the last round of SX since there were no current #1 plate holders racing. With Tomac out will Jett run the #1 two rounds early?

Maybe if it was coming off another HRC bike, but Yamaha currently ‘own’ that big number 1 for another few weeks and they will make Honda wait for it.

Nope. That isn’t his number and until Ironman wraps up, it belongs to Eli Tomac.

Do it like they do in the GP's when someone is crowned champion before the last race, like this, Tom Vialle in 2020, gold #1 in the front number plate but #28 on the side plates.

I thought it was customary to switch over to the #1 once it was earned?

I'm superstitious, I say no, because he's ridden with the # 18 all this MX season and he's been perfect.  Don't want to see putting a Dumb #1 plate on and then he ends up getting crashed into by Barcia at the start and then work his way through the field to a 2nd place and that ends the steak.

Me too. At least that's what I thought. I would also think the team would want to run it as well.

He'll have to run the number 1 next summer.

The only time I can remember anybody running an early # 1 outdoors  was RC.  But he had the title from the year before anyway  back then he could have run 1 or 4 the way the rules were.  So it really wasn't early  since he was the current, former and future  National champ.

Now they make the winner of the title run the number 1 plate the next season , no longer an option like it was for RC to run 1 or his regular number.  So in 2024 Jett will be #18 in SX, and 1 outdoors.

Will SMX have its own # plate for those 3 rounds each year? if so, will that allow a rider to pic a single digit # like the SX (450)and MX(250 and 450) champs do?  Since they are awarding national points for those rounds now those points will count towards a earned number.

The SMX champions will be able to choose a single digit career number or two digit career number.

Riders finishing in the top 10 in combined point across SX, MX, and SMX will be able to choose a two digit career number.

I feel like he should be able to. He’s the 450 outdoor champion.

I guess it makes sense to do it like that.  Otherwise the play offs are really just renaming off season races.

No reason to be flamed, 2 time world champ should be getting good results.

No need for Jett to chose any single digit number. He will be stuck with #1 anyway for the next years to come 🤷

I actually like the #18.

He should keep it as his career number.

Tomac is the #1 for '23 MX. Jett is #18.  And like someone else said the defending champ has to run the #1. I'm glad they changed that rule. All those years of RC we never saw a #1 out there except for that one odd race

For everyone saying Tomac is the champ right now, hes not. He no longer holds the reigning champion. Im not a jett fan, find him kind of annoying but he should be able to run the number 1. He is the current champion.

But AMA rules are they must wait till end of season

Now that this is on my mind, I might be changing my opinion. Running the number 1 plate during the season could be seen as a guy running a red plate in moto 2 after taking the points lead in moto 1.

to conclude, I have no fucking idea where I stand on this.

No. Jett is not technically supposed to be able to run the #1 until 2024 Motocross.  Hypothetically because if Tomac wanted to race the last two nationals, he would be running the #1 plate (YES Vitards! I realize that isn't happening, which is why I said hypothetically).

Now the question is, why were the Lawrence's able to run the #1's at the last round of supercross this year. Well technically they were not supposed to be able to. I, among others, were confused as to why they technically weren't supposed to. For the reason that, in the past if rider(s) wrapped up the regional championship before the East/West shootout finale they were able to run the #1(W)(E) plate. After looking into it, the reason that riders in the past were able to run it was because the East/West shootout was not a points paying race.  The race format went like this:

250 E Main Event (points paying race)

250 W Main Event (points paying race)

250 E/W Shootout (NON points paying race) - therefore, running the #1(W)(E) plates was allowed as it wasn't a points paying race and both the East and West had wrapped up there respective series earlier in the race program.

Fast forward to today, the E/W shootout is a points paying race. The race format at the finale goes:

250 E Heat race (qualifier for the shootout)

250 W Heat race (qualifier for the shootout)

250 E/W shootout (points paying race) - therefore, neither series was wrapped up until the conclusion of the 250 E/W shootout.

Apologies, as I know all of that can be somewhat confusing. It got me at first as well. The conclusion is that the Lawrence's were NOT supposed to be able to run the #1(W)(E) plates this year at the final round. But sometime you say, "what the hell" and officials made the call to let them. I assume because Christian Craig was the only rider that could have hypothetically lined up in that final race with a number 1 as he was the 2022 250 W champ. However, A.) Craig was already in the 450 class and B.) Craig was injured at the time anyways.

He did not earn the #1 plate for the 23 season Tomac did.

This. It really is that simple, and I don't understand why so many people think it's OK to run #1 in a season for which you are not the defending champ.

Why does anyone have a red background at the first round

I don’t think there’s a rule saying that can’t be done, is there? I like that idea.

I think they were just trying to hype the E/W shootout by running #1E and #1W plates. Pretty sure they've done it before a few times. It wasn't anything special just for the Lawrence's

I don't think so because it was 2004. We didn't do the MXdN that year right?

Ah, I forgot he ran it on the Honda. I was thinking about the time he ran it on the Suzuki at Glen Helen for the MXdN announcement. That may have just been for practice, though.
