My brother and I drove up from Eugene Oregon for the 1976 Puyallup Trans AMA.
That year I had been following Rodger Decoster and his Suzuki RM370, I had just purchased a 1976 Suzuki RM 370 and was so excited to see him race, even though I new his was a full blown factory bike! Now I’m 78 years old, it was the best day of racing in my life with all the MX legends!
Nice thread Reese.
Brings back some good memories.
Thank you

This is the coolest post I've ever seen on vital. My brother in law lives like a mile from there.. I always hated dragging down there for family gatherings but it's cooler just knowing Roger decoster was there once .....
Yeah I actually rode out there on that same property early 90s. At that time I had no idea they had a Trans-AMA there. Wish I had a photo.
My most memorable experience at the Puyallup Trans-AMA was when Tony DiStefano squared off a berm and roosted me straight in the face, I was just a young kid and had a Black eye from that for about 2 weeks. I can't remember the exact year, but I think it was 1977 or 1978. Also remember some really fast guy out there for a race one weekend that had a Butt Patch that said Magoo, I was not familiar with Danny Chandler, but I was very! familiar with the Mr Magoo cartoon and that's why it caught my attention. To this day I wondered if it was him, but I'm not sure, but he was one of the fastest riders there.
Old time MX history is awesome, thanks for all the old coverage!
I took my son there today after obligatory family gathering. We sat in the target parking lot and looked out at the field in the back , and tried to imagine Hannah trying to run down Roger Decoster.
It was great.
This is just north of the airport off the 161 right ?
Yeah that's it. Right off the airport and along that big row of trees.
Not sure which year race these pics were from, I`m thinking 1974.
How many rounds were there in ‘76 ? Think I was at a round in Southwick Mass in 76.(?)
Good Pics. Maybe a couple years later than '74? The Hondas in those photos were '77. The Suzooks like that were first available in '76 or so. Fond memories of those years.
Nice pics! Based on the Can-Ams, I would say 1976 as they are pre-production 1977 MX-3s.
Thanks, I agree was 1976.
'77, that's Mickey Kessler on the Montesa
Looks like '77. Smith was #9 and Noyce was #156 on the Honda's. RD was #104 in '77 and '78 but '78 hs works bike had the FIM larger sideplates
Pit Row
Red Engined RC500, too
Yes, 1977. '77 Honda RC500's may be the best looking motocross bikes of all time.
I was around 8 years old when the Trans Am series came to Texas and I think I saw it at Rabbit Run mx in Plano TX 76-77 series. I remember the GP riders De coster , Karsmaker , Wolsink and I'm sure a hole lot more.
I was at that race I think it was 77, went in the pits and saw Roger Decoster , also I thought there was a Japanese rider next to him I just can’t remember his name really good times back in the day!!
My dad has probably been to hundreds of AMA races and we go to Washougal and Seattle every year but he still brings up Puyallup all the time. To him that was the peak of moto life.
