Why wouldn't a national track have the gate cover plates?

If you don't have them dirt gets packed in around the pipe that has the gate cams and they can fall slow.

Look at the footage of the mechanics prepping the gate for the restart and they are kicking dirt in the hole and packing it round the pipe.

Maybe MX sports needs to require the gate covers.

I haven't been to a race in person for several years but do they not test the gate before each moto?  Seems like maybe a good idea moving forward if not in place already to test the gate after everyone gets in place and has their gate set up.   Like you mentioned mechanics are making all sorts of adjustments it's not hard to imagine a rock or dirt clog jamming it up.  It doesn't happen super often but a quick gate test before the 30 second board goes up could stop it altogether.

That is not a malfunction.

Chase said Jason hit the gate and chase followed.

That's the front wheel holding the gate up.

Just how a self penalising gate works.

I saw the same.  Wonder if they would of restarted if Masterpool got hung up?

Not how I saw it and they wouldn't have restated if that was the case. Their gates didn't drop as expected. Your wheel is also going to be into the gate if yours doesn't drop right and everyone else's does and you go. Gate malfunctioned all weekend. What do you think is more likely? The gate malfunctioned yet again or two pros got anxious and ran into a normally functioning gate?

Looks to me chase hit the gate. How else would his holeshot device come unlocked unless he slammed his front wheel in to the gate?

Nobody is debating whether or not he hit the gate, but hitting it because you jumped and hitting it because yours didn't drop and everyone else's did are not the same thing.

On the broadcast I thought Sexton and Anderson hit the gate. Looked to me that was why it didn't drop.  If that is the case, then Sexton and Anderson are very lucky the race was restarted.

I'd love to see a slow motion replay with a good view fairly up close

I have a hard time believing those 2 rider's loops malfunctioned.

I have seen dirt, especially wet clay, get packed around the pipe hard enough to cause it to fall slowly, but it doesn't look like that was the problem.

Either the trigger was too hard to kick and the gate dropper didn't hit it hard enough the first time or a rider somewhere bumped their gate hard enough to make the gate shake.

If they had been having problems all day with the gate taking a close look at the trigger would be the place to start.

I believe it malfunctioned. But that photo isn't proof of malfunction.

From what I hear the gate wobbled.

So I believe the starter would have tried to dropped the gates. It made them move. Then did it again an actually dropped the gate. Causing it to be such a long 5 second board.

Chase even said. Anderson flinched. Hit the gate and that caused him to hit the gate.

My comment more ment that photo isn't evidence of a malfunctioning gate coz they both have their wheel in the gate.

Looks like Sexton hit the gate because the hole shot device is already released

When they did the test drops after the red flag, a few of the gates were falling pretty slowly due to either bent pins or dirt buildup. They did about five test drops and I watched from the side view, not one time did they all fall evenly. Enough that it's noticeable to the eye.

I said this exact thing right away when I saw them packing the dirt in and around the damn pipe. All that friction slows that gate or makes it stick. The pipe trench should be empty of dirt, or have covers over it the whole way so dirt can't get packed in there. Everyone in motocross knows this. Why didn't they start digging out the trench by the pipe? Just very dumb how that all went down. Time for a gate upgrade so this doesn't happen anymore.

A properly operated and maintained existing one would be ok.

Looked like they spent too much time trimming tree branches.

Some of the gate sections were slow and sticking in the trench.

They look a bit light to drop fast too.

Maybe they borrowed the WSX starting gate?

Yair, good thought for the left 20.

And while you are at it there are a lot of other things at Washougal that need to be improved to bring it to national standard.
