The starting gates need to be offset in someway. The current start system is a stupid and dangerous game of tetris. The current system is also a bad business model as it takes out talent for no reason.

If gates 1-10 were 1/2 a gate in front of gates 11-20 and 11-20 were 1/2 a gate ahead of gates 21-30 and so on it could provide a way for safer starts as the riders would converge into the first turn more naturally.

Why not just have the fans vote on where they want everyone to finish, and decide the championships that way? OP would be happy as the racers wouldn't even have to start any races, or travel to the races, or even train and practice? That should eliminate most injuries right?

The day motocross and supercross go to some other type of start is the day I am done with it. It's just right as it is. It was tried long ago with Ultracross and sucked.

That’s not the grates, that start configuration has always had that type of crash through the years at Red Bud.

You ever gone into a first turn with 39 other guys aiming the same 15ft section of track before?

Correlation is not causation.

I posted up in a previous thread some pictures of random first turns from the first four races this year.  There is nothing to suggest that riders are being bunched up into the first turn.

I always thought the old Red Bud start was dangerous to start with.   I'm one of the few that thought the GP start was better.

First turn pile ups are a part of racing and will never go away.  But what can go away is the lame starting devices and RPM monitors on the bikes.  Ban them and force the pros to have some throttle control off the gate.  Get rid of the metal grates too.

I think the OP was meaning the grates as the issue. Like some have said the grates make it easier for everybody to get a good jump off the start and keep people closer . But the downside is with everybody closer there is less room for everybody. And everybody being closer gives more people the chance to get the holeshot and more people are holding it on later into the corner.

I don't know really where I stand on that idea. I feel like there have always been guys going down in the first turn. Now maybe You get the top guys going down more often than they used to with making it easier to get a good launch. Where in the past it might have been more of the guys that are not front runners going down. I'm sure that if You overlay some video of some starts You could see how the start's are different now.

That start configuration at Red Bud has always had that exact crash the grates have nothing to do with it…The OP has multiple posts about the grates, about whoops in SX etc….he won’t be happy until all the racers are in those big blow up suits so when they crash all they will do is bounce….

I don’t think the grates are necessarily the issue, I think the gates should be staggered to spread the field out more in some fashion.

it’s dumb to watch 50/50 shot if there’s a pile up or not.

It’s the way the first turn is configured…go back and watch past races through the years at Red Bud and you will see that exact crash. I even brought this up in the Hangtown crash thread and said the old Red Bud start had crashes like that all the time…and here we are..

You would still have pile ups even if there was a staggered start.  The speed is the issue.  The grates, starting devices, and RPM gauges all contribute to the higher speeds into the first turn.  Slow them down a bit off the gate and the pile ups aren't as severe.

Well we can't say they had NOTHING to do with the crash. But we also can't say they had everything to do with it.

So what were the reasons for the same type of crash in that first turn over Red Bud's history that happened without grates, start devices etc...It has to do with that first turn...not the grates...

Are we here for the pile ups or for the racing? No better than the nascar fans who sit during the racing only to stand up for a crash.

Utterly amazing that in 2023 first turn pile ups are a concern. It is part of the sport since when, 1960?  OP should think of the children and start a petition to end first turns by just having straight line racing with no more than 3 at a time, brackets and such. Be safer that way.

So would really short start straights keep the speed down and the first turn crashes less severe? Hard to say as there is a whole lot of excitement/energy/competitive testosterone flowing in the first turn. I vote to get rid of all start devices/rpm lights/metal grates, etc. These guys are The Best in their craft. Let them prove it!!!

The first 100 feet should be deep beach sand thats smoothed out for each start.
