KTM 300sx vs 350sxf

Hi Vital members,

I need your help on choosing my next bike. I'm seconds away from pulling the trigger, but just can't decide on which bike. Any feedback from members that have ridden both would be very helpful to my decision.

Here are my stats

They're very different bikes. Four stroke vs two stroke for one, and the 300SX will have a lot more power than the 350. Really depends on riding style whether you're more of a two stroke guy or a four stroke guy. The 450SXF vs the 300SX is more of an apples to apples comparison from a power perspective.

350. I’d wait a few more years on the tbi bikes. They aren’t quite dialed yet.

If you are looking for ease of use go with the 350. There is an active riding member on here (Langhammx) who has experience with both. Hopefully he can chime in.

As said above Langham clearly knows his shit and is well acquainted with the orange bikes, hold fire for a reply before throwing money down dude 😂

I really wanted the 300 to be awesome and I've paid a lot of attention and it's all sounded a bit mixed if not slightly negative so far, I'm leaning toward Soggy's thought on it.

The 300 has a lot more power than the 350.  My two riding buddies got 300's and I opted for a 350.  We all came off 250 2 strokes and were evenly matched speed wise on the 250's.  I have to work my arse off to keep up with them now.  Food for thought!

I really like my 300.  Took a bit to get used to it, the power is abrupt like a 2 stroke but yet it’s smooth and linear….

I listened to the Keefer podcast about the 350 vs the 300 and it seems he was leaning towards the 300sx even though he is a huge 4 stroke guy.

My friend has a new 300SX, I have a nicely modded 17 FC350, and prefer the 350.  The 300 has a bunch of bottom end power but falls on it's face if you try and rev it, while the 350 has that Goldilocks "just right" power throughout the entire rev range.  The 3honey does feel light and willing to change direction, but I prefer the predictability of my 350.  Both are utterly fantastic machines.  50+ vet intermediate, 160lbs.

I have both bikes… hundreds of hrs on 2 different 350”s, and have 55hrs on my 300Sx. The only issue I had with my 300 was to have the TPI reset after getting the ECU tuned to spread out the monster midrange hit. The 350 is easier to ride but not as fast as the 300 but…. If you are not up to the task of riding the 300,  it will work you…I love the 350”s and feel they are still the best Vet/ old guy bikes… but if you have a 2 stroke itch that needs to be scratched, the 300 will not disappoint you. The tune on the stock 300”s left a lot on the table, map1, the mellow map, feels like a very rich setting, safe but a little sluggish. Map2 the aggressive map is much better but has a hard midrange hit then signs off quickly . I rode mine stock for 30hrs and then had the remap done. I have 1 map I use for everything now and the bike is a rocket… I have heard the issues that some guys are having, fouling plugs, warning lites on…. All I can say is mine has had no such issues, 55hrs, original top end & clutch… and still running very strong…

350 for track 300 for trail. Not saying you can't ride a 300 on the track but they just don't rev out very well like you need on a track.

Who did your remap Sandman? My midrange is just as you described.. monsterous, and thus tires you out way too soon

Thanks for the awesome write-up! I've also never owned a 2-stroke, so it has me second-guessing going with the 300, but on the other hand I don't know if I want another 4t.

Ok, here’s my take on it.

I bought the XC300 for my off-road bike and absolutely loved it. So I sold my ‘19 350 which was totally dialed in and bought the SX300. I tried to like it, but in the end it was more like riding a 500 2-stroke, than riding a 250 2-stroke. I gave up and sold it, then bought a ‘23 350. Best decision I could’ve made.

the SX300 was/is an incredible machine and if I was riding the track as much as I ride off-road, I might have spent more time trying to get the hang of the 300.
But as soon as I got on the ‘23 350, I knew I’d made a good choice, it’s such a great bike. Meanwhile the XC300 is my favorite bike I own. Go figure….

Does Ktm still offer ride days to try models out? If they do I’d try to get to one of them and if not try to get on both to try them out. IMO it’s very hard to get an idea from such a range of riders without knowing their skill and riding style and not know yours either. Two people mentioned the monster mid range of the 300. They are totally right when they say that for themselves , I however wish it had more hit like my last built 300. Matt fisher also described it very well from his perspective saying it’s got a ton of bottom but falls on its face. He rides a 350 and rode a friends 300. I ride a 300 and rode a friends 350 and thought the same thing except I loved how the 300 lights up and then you just need to shift, the 350 felt like it took forever to come to life but then goes forever once it does, it never needs to e shifted. I’ve put 55 hours on my 300 with zero issues and loved every second of it. I’ve ridden a 23 350 at two different tracks and loved it too. I do know I could happily own either bike and would most likely be the exact same speed on them.

I have a 2024 300SX and am very pleased with it. Also owned a 350 (2018 Husky 350), then decided that because I am more of a "lugger" than a revver I went from the 350 back to the 450 (a 2021 Husky 450). I really wanted a 2 stroke in the stable and while I am still getting used to the 300 it is a very easy bike to ride, especially in the white map. Having grown up on 2 strokes and having owned several YZ250's riding a 2 stroke is not lost on me. The green map on the 300 is a whole other level, much different. I can ride the white map without any reservation while the green map requires more respect. I dig the bike though and am quite happy with it. I think this 2 stroke technology is amazing and it can be ridden similar to a 2 stroke. I have much to learn about how to ride the bike better but I have gotten on with it quite well this far. No ragrats, not even one letter.

300SX= fighter pilot

350sfx= donkey ride

just kidding as the 350 is a very capable bike, I ride mine when I”m feeling weak or hungover… if you are not 100% committed to riding a 2stroke and getting it setup for you, then get the 350. I have an FmF factory fatty, stock silencer, +1 on rear sprocket to make 3rd more usable. It can be lugged and rev”d, now pulls into the top end very nicely.

This is my 3rd year riding and picked up a 300 this year. Coming from a YZ250F that i felt never had quite what i was looking for. I am 6'0 185 no gear. Tried a couple 450's last year and thought they were way to much. Bought the 300 blind with no experience on 2 strokes and I must admit i have zero experience with a 350. But i am loving my 300. I ride moto only and mostly for fun. I don't take my races seriously. Only 15hrs on it so far but zero issues or complaints.

For anyone that has a TBI bike the latest KTM calibration from 6/14 is supposed to clean up a lot of the rich low-mid issues/plug fouling.

Can you shift up? Ride a gear higher?

I have spent time on both 23 300sx and 350sxf and personally much prefer the 350. The new 350 is much more of a mini 450 in a sense than the prior version and has a very versatile power nature. The 300 is great for a 2 stroke but did not have the pull I would have liked...seemed like it signed off very early. I felt like the 350 was stronger than the 300 as well.

Sounds like it depends on which end of the powerband you like to ride in.  If you like to ride from bottom to just south of screaming, the 300 is far stronger.  If you’re a rev ranger, then you’ll do your business long after the 300 has signed off. So in that case, the 350 would be for you.   I have a 300SX.  It’s been perfect since hour one and the motor still amazes me.  I’ve ridden a 23’ 350 and it felt slow to me, but I’m definitely not a revver.  I prefer to ride a lower rpm, keep the chassis free and carry momentum.  Either bike is a great choice, but probably for different riders.

I have a vortex and pipe on my 22 350 and can’t picture a 300 being way stronger like some are saying.

 CC for CC a 2 stroke makes more hp and more torque. Even with stagnant development and even with less CC's.
