For any of the National Number questions that people have been asking on podcasts recently, here is where we sit after Hangtown. I have been updating this every Monday throughout the season, and it has been interesting to look at/track.
Deegan would be pretty cool to keep it rolling and lock down his #38 next year for his brand and merch. (something Motocross needs more of!!!)
Levi Kitchen(#47???), Jordan Smith (although he is struggling to get good points in these terms outdoors), Tom Vialle (what number would he choose??), and Max Vohland are some names to look at for potential National Numbers next year as they may be close depending on when some of the 450 guys come back.
Sounds like they are cutting it off at the end of outdoors like usual and the crazy amount of SMX point that you could get from the 2x and 3x rounds.
If no one cares, I will still update it for my own moto nerdy ways ![]()
It will be interesting to see how high guys like Masterpool and Drake can climb racking up points in the 450 class this summer
Tom Vialle (what number would he choose??)
The only way he gets to choose a number is if he wins the 250 outdoor title or ends up top 10 in combined points.
So if deegan ends up top 10 combined he can pick the 38?
Unless there was a rule change with the creation of SMX, anyone finishing in the top 10 in combined points can choose a two digit career number.

1st place - gets the #1 and a two or three digit career number of their choice (as long as it isn't already taken)
Top 10 in combined points - gets a career 2 digit number of their choice (as long as it isn't already taken)
Top 100 - gets assigned a 2 digit number that somewhat relates to where they were within the top 100
I think I have that right?
Unless there are some massive changes in points throughout the year, Deegan has a solid chance at a carreer number, Kitchen, Vialle, and Smith would be long shots at a top 10
I don't think they can get a three digit career number, I think it's only two. But I might be wrong!
Yeah I was just highlighting some of the guys that were close to the top ten (just outside the top ten) and that will be interesting to see how high they can get before some of the 450 guys come back that are already in the top ten.
I am guessing Deegan will be the best bet if he can stay healthy, but I was just throwing a couple more in there that are also close if things go well in outdoors.
Drake is in 44th right now with 89 points.
Masterpool is in 74th right now with 37 points. - Rough he didn't score any in Supercross or round 1 really being in the 250 class, hence his switch to the depleted 450 class.
I would assume they will get up there but not National Number choosing high. The 250 guys that are 5-10 guys will climb at the same speed as them and are starting with a lot more points.
That rule stopped after 2010. Guys like Pourcel and Alessi got their 3 digit numbers prior to the rule change. You're correct saying it's only 2 now.
yes sorry that was a brain fart, meant to say 1 or 2 digit career number
Will smx playoff points count towards next years numbers as well ?
I just checked and yes
Riders that win a 450 SX, 450 MX, 250 MX 450 SMX, 250 SMX Championship will be eligible to choose a single digit career number if available.
Riders who finish in the Top 10 combined points across 450 SX, 250 SX, 450 MX, 250 MX, 450 SMX, and 250 SMX will be eligible to choose a two digit career number.
After that numbers 10-99 will be issued according to highest to lowest total points scored across all 3 series. If there's a tie in points, the tie breaker will go to the rider that competed in all three series.
If a tie remains, it will then be broken by the rider that competed in both the SX and MX series. If each rider competed in a single series, the rider with the best Moto/Main Event finish will be awarded with the number.
Since east is dropping their worst finish to make it equal for the west rounds I wonder if they will also drop their worst finish for combined points as well when it comes to numbers.
where are you seeing this?
I talked to Davey about it in Nashville and he said they were still having discussions about it and that they didn't want to add SMX points into the final tally.
keep going on this chart, do you have points all the way down?
Like to see that too....
When will numbers like 10,16,19,20,22 be used again ?
My guess would be no.
They dropped an SX round so everyone is now on equal footing heading into MX and SMX.
I do like that 250 SX regional champions can no longer choose a two digit career number.
Personally I still wish that 250SX regional points would not count towards earning a national number. Same applies to 250 SMX points.
I hope that's the case, but as of now what I posted is a 2023 Rule Update.
Under Section 3.

Under current rules, all of them should be available for 2024 unless Bogle decides to make an appeal to keep his number. He hasn't scored any points this year, but if he plans on racing AMA SX/MX next year he could keep his number. Same for Brayton.
I just checked with AMA, and yes to SMX points count towards the national number total.
They haven't made a decision if SMX championship in either class will allow a single-digit selection. It's still to be decided.
Looks like Deegan has a great opportunity to get in the top ten with the points listed.
He is #11 now and will surpass Tomac, KROC and Barcia. And could get past Hampshire and AC if he stays in the top 3-4 guys weekly.
But he will need to stay healthy.
It doesn't seem like regional points for national number is a big deal. Yeah, they are only racing against half the field. But also they are only racing half the races, so it kind of washes out.
How will the #1 work for SMX, with the potential for 3 different champions on 450 this year (ex. SX Chase, MX Jett, SMX Webb)
Do they only wear the #1 during their respective series, I would think Feld would want to hype the SMX champion through all series in 2024. Will we see 2 #1s with different backgrounds or something to distinguish them?
Here is a link to my spreadsheet Nerdiness. Updated right now to have Deegan getting #38 as that seems likely if he stays healthy. Also a couple numbers in there that should become available, but AMA sometimes lets X number of years retired guys keep there National Number on hold.

Enjoy!
Keep it going, I was having this conversation with one of Amerine's guys this morning. Hoping our homeboy can pull a double digit for next year.
Updated after Lakewood - Thunder Valley
Two Tabs: One with the overall points breakout, another with the new national number outlook
Deegan is officially in the top 10.
Kitchen looking like a good candidate for a national number (#47 i'd assume) as well if he keeps it going. 450 guys are going to start dropping out of the top ten.

10 - Brayton - has no plans for returning to AMA pro SX/MX racing. #10 should become available for the 2024 season.
16 - Osborne - has no plans for returning to AMA pro SX/MX racing. #16 should become available for the 2024 season.
19 - Bogle - no clue as to plans for racing any AMA pro SX/MX races. However, Bogle would qualify for the one year exemption to keep #19.
20 - Tickle - no clue as to plans for racing any AMA pro SX/MX races. However, Tickle has been successful in getting the AMA to keep his #20 even though he hasn't raced in a AMA pro race since 2021. #20 should be up for grabs in 2024.
22 - Reed - no clue if Reed will ever race another pro SX/MX AMA race. There was talk of him wanting to make a main event when over 40 yrs of age. Reed hasn't raced a AMA pro race since 2020. However, Reed has been successful in getting the AMA to keep his #22 since his last AMA pro race. With his status in the sport, I could see the AMA letting Reed keep his #22. However, my personal opinion is that the #22 should be up for grabs in 2024. I do remember RJ Hampshire stating that he would like to take the #22 when/if it becomes available.

You have Max Anstie listed twice, once at numbers 20 and 22.
You also have Levi Kitchen as career number 47. He's currently not in the top 10 combined points and he hasn't won a title so he would be assigned a number based on points scored.

Thanks for your Duties -MAVERICK- !
I have updated the errors.
On the Levi Kitchen note, these are projections. He is sitting in 11th with 271 points and not far away from 450 riders that will be dropping out of the top 10 here soon if Levi keeps putting in results in the 250 class. Foreshadowed a week early perhaps, but just predictions here.
Jordan Smith, Vohland, and Vialle are a little down the list but also potential contenders at the top 10 overall for national numbers sake.
