what a joke. If you are a solid 17-18 place guy but live breathe and dream moto then you are screwed and cannot live your dream without taking a loan out to do it.
PGA tour.... golfers pay their own way and similar privateer aspect to it.... if you make the cut you're usually making $10,000‐15,000 purse money to finish last place, so 60-80th or so. I get that there's more money and broader appeal, better TV deals, etc.... but this is embarrassing. Would take very little effort for riders to unionize and put an end to this but too many people making money off them that will convince them not to do it.
MXSports doesn't care if privateers follow the season round for round. They have agreements with all the OEMs to send their riders to it and then they know they can fill up the rest of the gate with regional pros who don't mind taking their stab with the big boys for bragging rights. It's a system that's worked for them for 40 years. Don't expect them to change it much.
Dont forget that a pro license for outdoors is now 550. It was 350. you're a 1000 in before you ever get near a gate.

Just as a note, that's per moto. I believe the total purse per national is 100k now when you combine both classes and both motos.
Pro moto went from around 70k per event to 100k in 2023.
Supercross went from 125k-ish per race (combined for both classes) to 180k-ish per race in 2023.
Considering Supercross has a lot more fans coming through the gate / buying tickets / more expensive ticket options...I'm not surprised.
Even though the payout is not enough....it's good to see that they are making small changes to help. That increase is barely enough to keep up with current inflation.
Hey, I have a stupid idea...........how about the promotor, tracks, and racers all share in the ticket sales? I mean good turn out or bad they all get a percentage. More ticket sales mean more purse for that race for the riders. It would be like a progressive purse as you get to see how many tickets are sold per day and how the purse increases with each ticket sold! Ok.......bash away Mx Sports supporters! lol
I'm not the county recorder so I have no idea but it happens. I also said maybe there's a chance.
TGO is becoming a joke. This is why they deserve talent ditching outdoors to race WSX. Complete disgrace and an embarrassment to our sport and the athletes.

Does any other mx series pay out more ? Anywhere in the world ?
My local county fair.
Pays out 100k. ??
No it was a joke but for how hard and brutal the outdoors is this really is pathetic. You can stock shelves at Walmart and make more than 7th place in 2 weeks.
I think the biggest thing we forget is most of the top 20 will have a salary to race, contingency depending on how well they do, gear deals, other sponsors, and then purse money.
One difference between MX and golf, I believe would be that top riders have a salary, sure it may get cut some from injury, but they get salary plus bonus for race results. Golf I can't imagine they have a salary. In both fields they would have gear and possibly outside sponsors.
I still think the payouts are low, but since these guys are making other money it's not as bad as it looks.
Top 20 guys like this guy? Seems not ok with this.
Or this guy?
Doesn’t the tracks pay something like 1 mill to MXSports for the right to hold the race. Seems like that could be the purse money to me.
Pit Row
Or him.
Get 17th place every race (SX and MX) didn't bother looking up 17th in SMX you would get around $69,260 in purse and contingency money with KTM. I would imagine the 17th best 450 rider in the US would be getting other sponsors as well.
Here again, do I think they should be paid more, yes I do. I would be in favor of the riders getting a purse + a % of ticket sales (3,5, 10 %?) split between all 80 guys that make the motos, but I don't run MX Sports so I can't help the racers there.
Ok now subtract travel expenses, mechanic, race bike, bike maintenance, entry fees, and riding facility fees.
Add in salary, if applicable, and pay from sponsors.
These guys know the payouts, so either do better or get another job. I don't recommend trying to live life as a pro motocross/supercrosser as a privateer. If you aren't able to get on some sort of team to get a salary or offset some of the costs you mentioned then they are probably better off just doing a few rounds for fun or for a challenge.
In the real world, should the top 20 O/A for the full season make $100k+, maybe, there is a lot of risk involved and a lot of sacrifices, but the promoters aren't sharing enough of the pie for that to happen.
I wonder if MX sports sends out 1099s as well?
I don't know the fee for tracks to host a national, but MX Sports does have to pay $1m to DMG for the rights to the nationals.
If your top 20. Hell if your top40 and not some sort of hook up on bikes your doing something wrong.
I know guys no where near national level that get bikes from dealers. Or cost price bikes.
Strip them. New plastics, sticker kit, kit suspension, bars, Wheels, clutch and ignition cover.
Ride them for 6-12 months. Put all the new shit back on them and sell them off the dealer floor. Sell them for 2k under retail. The dealer cuts even. Or if your paying you get enough to buy the next new bike without loss.
It won’t change until the riders don’t show up.
You mean like when a majority of the guys with name recognition are hurt from supercross and when others go race somewhere else for more money or just decide to take the summer off because it isn't worth it? At some point just having 40 guys on the line isn't going to bring in the fans and their money.
Its a start but still might not change things.
Real question, have DC (mx sports) and Feld ever got in a room and asked these guys what would you like to see differently about supercross or motocross? What can we do to improve motocross? What about supercross?
The thing I realized is everyone has different opinions and thoughts. By asking the questions someone might bring up something genius that no one else thought of before.
Track the data, per round, to see what MX sports has to contribute to the overall purse.
Overall entries, X entry fee’s = pre-paid purse money. Add racer guest pit passes charge, for a grand total of pre-paid purse money.
All of these nickels and dimes amount to a purse that the riders almost pay for themselves. All those guys that don’t qualify on the day, paid the same fee’s as the winner. The numbers don’t lie. This system is a cash cow, always has been.
I lived a breathed to be a rock star but that's not happening either. Don't know why you guys seem to think because someone has a passion and a dream that they are owed a comfortable living by racing, if you are good enough you get paid and if not then face reality and find another way to make your money. People pay money on the national level to see the best of the best.
