Who was the idiot that came up with this? No MX or SX champion is elected so why cheapen the title with some cheesy term!

Even simply "likely champion" would've been better. Whoever runs this show approves/has some wild ideas.

Tomac lost it by injury, Sexton earned it with 6 wins and the most points at the end of the season. This is not the first time that this has happened and it won’t be the last.

I would blame Leigh Diffey, he used that term last week and it seems to have stuck

Seriously. I'm not getting this "asterisk: thing. If Eli would've won this year he woulda had 7 or 8 (unlikely 9) wins. With a handful of funky rides just like chase.

If you win 6 races and get the championship, you earned it. If a rider gets zero and somehow fumbles into a championship, then we'll talk.

The fact is, 18 points back isn't that much when a race win is 26.

Keep telling yourself that.

From 3rd place and 18 points down.   The top two guys go out with fluke injuries.

So if tomac won the championship would have he won it by default?

All the other contenders were out due to injury.

And tomac only had the points lead coz chase crashed multiple times.

I'm an Eli fan. I'll start there.

All riders must play the cards dealt.

While it was most certainly a gift to Chase, or, luck, if you will. From 2 guys, not just 1. (Damn that's a solid pun right there!)

He still earned it and was the last man standing. No one can argue that.

I'm glad to see someone else get it that busted his ass for it.

Same as most every other year. Other riders went out at the end instead of earlier is all. #@NO*

If only there was some way to determine who was overall best through the year, you could like, give them "points" based on where they finished, and like make wins worth a little more, and if they don't finish or don't line up, don't give them any of these "points", then at the end of the year, you add them all up, and whoever did the best, adding up all the wins/losses/etc, would be the champion. What do you guys think?

A lot of people don’t grasp this reality from the comfort of their recliner.

That idea is so crazy, it just might work.

You can only beat the guys that line up. Some people want to act like it’s a pro racing in the c class.

From the beginning of time, Nuthangers have bitched that their favorite rider didn't win and that the actual champion isn't really the real champion, because unexpected events happened.  Chase Sexton earned this Championship and good for Honda winning every AMA title up for grabs.  If Tomac ( Yamaha ) and Webb ( KTM ) fans can't handle it, try  some of this.

I'm just disappointed by how the season ended with so many guys hurt. This really sucks going into the outdoors and takes a little zing out of the season for me personally. I felt like it was finally getting back to a spot where we could see a few guys in the hunt.

As far as Chase earning the championship, I'm on the fence. He was there the whole year but he was also on track to be third in the series. The last mud race was what set that up with him and webb back in the pack and missing the podium. He'll have it in the books and the check is written so he is the champ.

Chase is an extremely worthy champion.  At the same time, the term "champion elect" is one of the dumbest terms I've heard used in a long time.

For those people that think Chase's championship should have an asterisk (does anyone actually believe that?), what if Eli was injured at the first round and was out for the rest of the season? Would Chase still have an asterisk? What's the difference? The champion is whoever has the most points at the end of the season after all is said and done.

So stupid.

he won the title, earned it by going fast, winning races, and crashing lightly…perfect recipe.

no gifts in this sport, none.

Here’s why I have no problem with this title. Chase was the fastest rider all year. He gave away a ton of points early, but the truth is no one was faster. I’d be interested to see how many times Chase ran down and passed both Tomac and Webb in races, and compare that to how many times either Webb or Tomac chased down and passed Sexton. It seems like a Sexton passed those two more than the other way around, but I truly don’t know. The year Sexton won his first 250 title he had nothing for Forkner, that was not the case this year. If Chase were just rolling around in third every race and ended up with the title, then yes I might agree it was an “elect” situation, but that was not the case here. Thats my 2 cents anyway……

What happened to being called the "points leader". I'm not a fan of "champion elect".

I think the term "Champion Elect" was used, because mathematically, Eli was the only one close enough to win the Championship other than Chase, but since Eli got injured, and the likelihood of him racing SLC was next to nothing, he was theoretically eliminated, although not mathematically.

Basically, Chase was gonna win it, but it wasn't official until Eli didn't enter the heat race at SLC, and that's the term he used.

Its because he was going to be champion but was not yet due to tomac needing to not show up, so technically they couldnt call him champ yet even though he 100% was going to be so they needed some type of term to use that they never had used before and it just ended up being that. Wasnt that big of a deal.

Sexton was fastest a lot of the time, but also crashed most of the time when he was leading.   I'm sure Tomac could have ridden faster if he wanted to, (does beast mode sound familiar to anyone?) but he's smart enough to know that to finish first, you need to stay on 2 wheels.

Tomac's injury and loss of the title was a fluke.  He didn't crash himself out of the championship.

When they were both racing, Tomac had an 18 point lead, and was well on his way to the championship.
