He didn't even finish last season's SX, and he's done it this year with a team that started building a bike and themselves with no backup data from the ground up in December. With all that he is close to contending for third in points to his old team mate who started the year much, much farther ahead in development.
Based on current momentum I’d say he’s closer to battling Barcia for 4th than he is battling Chase for 3rd. Still an impressive year none the less.

I do agree with this, but I do question where it went wrong..
When this sixth generation CRF450 was built for '21, Kenny was raving about it and reeling off wins in the first half of the SX season. Then mid way started to go off the boil and started blaming the bike. Then again like you say in 22 it was a disaster and also Chase in 23 having his issues.
If the problem is the bike, why didnt Kenny run his early 2021 set-up last year? He was openly talking about how the '21 bike was a marked improvement from the '20 bike.

I think riders and fans put too much emphasis on the bike? Take more accountability. No bike will ever be perfect. All the bikes(including Suzuki) over the recent years are all really fast.
Kenny has problems battling since his injury. Sextons problem is choking this season. These are not bike related issues.
But going back to Kenny, so far his season is almost mirroring the last 2 and some people are saying it's amazing? Different bike similar results. Tells me it isn't the bike. It's Kenny.
If anything the team should be praised more for making an amazing bike.
the problem with brand loyalty (and you can argue riders too) is that people want their hated brands to lose, social media and these sorts of forums allow people to speak their view like everyone else should have the same view.
Even Eli complained about his setup a few weeks ago and he has one of the best suspension experts on his team!
Have a listen to the Ricki Gilmour interview I posted here; Tomac tells Ricki that in the Outdoors the bike only needs to be close to the mark and he can do the rest, but Supercross is a different story, setup is everything to the elite guys to be able to gain an edge that enables them to preform to the best of their ability.
absolutely, and I highly doubt every bike is 100% out there each week just that you hear about one brand not being 100% than all the others

I reckon anybody else would have ponied up a "big paycheck" for him if he'd decided he liked their bike the best. As a matter of fact...I'd be willing to bet HEP/Progressive didn't have the biggest check of them all. KR has basically said he picked the Suzuki because he liked the bike the best out of all he rode...so it wasn't a decision based on the size of the check, necessarily.
I don't think this is true. Many teams were full, and he carries a lot of baggage. He's not in the position is his career to be able to choose any team he wants to ride for. He's an excellent rider but not a championship contender anymore. You really think Star, KTM, or Kawi would have offered him a big contract? Probably not. Shit he didn't even ride any of those bikes. Probably because there was no opportunity there. He even said he was considering pitting out of the Club MX truck as a privateer.
I really think HEP was really the only team super interested.
I agree he should be paid well. He's an amazing rider. But let's not act like he had multiple factory deals on the table.
I thought this was common knowledge. Which is all the more poignant. Nobody wanted him, but he is having a solid season despite that.

I was also wrong about him if this continues. I thought he would implode like he did last year (and previously) when the results were not what he wanted....by blaming illness/bike/whatever. So far he has held strong and it's been awesome to have him out there battling.
I guess I should have said that any team whose bikes he had a chance to ride would probably have been able to pay him generously instead of how I put it. I mean, you're right in that he didn't ride every team bike, because they were full and didn't have room for another rider on their roster. Heck, PC put together two Kawies for him...and he never threw a leg over either of them. Even though he's not consistently a top-3 rider any more...I don't believe he would ride for nothing.
