Does Tomac still pass James?

A few weeks ago I’d have thought this was not even a question, but now we’re down to 7 races left considering at this point he’s not racing in 2024. Neck injury, couple lackluster (for ET) rides, the rest of the field seems to be improving and his starts seem to have gone backwards a bit. I still think it happens and am rooting for him but what say you?

Poll

Tomac 51 +?

He looked like a different guy lastnight. I think we're about to see him apply the heat.

He’d be at 51 if he didn’t bunch em at Vegas 2017

He still hasn’t said he’s not racing next year, so he could get quite a few more than 50.

After following closely the careers of James Stewart and Eli Tomac I’d like to watch them in a match sprint thru 50 meters of SX whoops.

SX only in 24, retires with 60 wins

Edit. Meant 2024 not 25

He could get really close to jeremy next year.

He would basically have to win everything through 24 to do it

You think he's gonna go undefeated next year?

Would be awesome to see but I gotta give the nod to James in theory. He's got the brain shutoff mode next level win or die that i dont think Eli has. I think that would carry him to the win.

Probably right. James Stewart went across whoops faster than seemed possible like a maestro on piano keys.  Tomac is the only one that comes close.  ET passed and gapped everyone else last night in the whoops.  He and James did/does the same every year in Daytona.

Stew would be at 65 if he didn't bunch em at several of them. Its all part of the equation.

Agree. Win or die trying was james. He died trying alot of times and that's why his win/championship ratio is a little off.

Reed was just as fast in the whoops.

Reed made most of his ground on Stew through the whoops. was every other part of the track he couldn't get dialed.

Millsaps was crazy fast as well through whoops.

Tomac finishes mid 50's but is not a threat to 72. 2nd best all time wins pretty dang impressive, good on him. What a career thus far.

Hopefully he does!  I love to see records broke and history made.  What's remarkable is every one currently racing is a mile behind him.  It won't be until the next generation of riders come along until there is a shot at breaking his record.... which is second only to the King.

At the time I’d never seen anyone go thru SX whoops like Mike Bell in Atlanta Fulton County Stadium.  Since then no one has been faster than James Stewart in stadium whoops.  Except maybe Jean Michel Bayle.  That dude was something else.

All due respect to Reed, Millsaps, Bailey, Pastrana, McGrath, Karsmakers, Hannah, Bullet Billy Lilles, Ezra Lusk, Carmichael, Dungey, Shae Bentley, Barry Higgins, Keith Turpin, Jeff Stanton, Jeff Ward, Stanton and Pourcel.  Windham, Semics, O’Mara, and Barnett.  Is Webb the modern Barnett?

I would add Windham to that list as well. He was so smooth it was deceiving how fast he went.

There were a couple years where Reed was the only guy on the track doing some of the big rhythms Stewart was doing (mainly '09). He usually just couldn't do them quite as cleanly for 20 laps, would clip his back wheel or float in the air a bit too much compared to James. Reed's whoop speed was awesome though.

So do SMX wins count toward all time SX wins?

No

SX is SX

MX is MX

The Finals are The Finals

Note: if you’ve noticed, they do use SMX over-all statistics… I’m still not sure if I’m diggin that, yet.

Don't you think Eli must have figured something out with the bike in the whoops? He has not been all that great this year in the whoops until Seattle in my opinion. Or maybe these just suited him.
