I'm not a local anymore but some of you out of towners may want a couple hot tips. Anyone can feel free to add.
It looks like the Red Wings are playing the Avalanche in the afternoon so the town should be jumpin.
Xochimilco Restaurant, about 10 minutes away and the best Mexican food in town.
Best Detroit style pizza (The best style pizza anywhere) is Buddys less than half a mile away.
Little Caesars Arena has some bars and restaurants as part of the facility that you can get to from the outside. Mike's Pizza Bar is good.
Elwood Bar and grill, been around forever. Cool art deco joint.
Town Pump Tavern another cool old school joint. everyone feels like a local.
Because it's St. Patty's Day tonight it's damn tough to beat The Old Shillelagh
American Coney Island and Lafayette Coney Island are neighbors and are the best in the city, you have to decide which you like best.
Greektown Casino is the closest casino but there is Motor City and MGM
If you are into "That Kind of Nightlife" head to 8 mile for the ballet. Trumpps was always solid.
Blackjack
The Coliseum has great live entertainment.
If you have time and it interests you go to the Henry Ford museum. All kinds of American Industrial Era History exhibits.
Sorry just re-read this and saw you were once a local so you’d already know about it
I've only been there once and I forgot all about it. It was a solid choice though. I actually had a great steak the night I went.
I see you're from Harrison Township. I've lived in Harrison Twp and just outside most of my life. Do they still race in Milan or is it just a practice track? Looks like they call it Twisted MX now I spent a lot of Wednesday nights practicing and Friday nights racing there.
The Shop
DeCal Works Huge Plastic Inventory of UFO and Polisport kits.
Free shipping: VITALMX
Luxon 4-Post Bar Mounts
$189.95 - $239.95
This isn't for me, it's for others and that's a great and welcome idea. Good thing to do if people are sticking around Sunday.
Head up to Belmont or 8 mile and take in an authentic rap battle
Fuck the free world
It did reopen as Twisted MX and they do race there.
I haven't personally raced there. Only practiced. It's alright. I much prefer Baja.
Keep your head down and the windows rolled up
Stay alive and avoid any puncture wounds.
The D is a much kinder gentler place nowadays
Cross the boarder at Windslow bridge & make a run for French fries & gravy from Thortons.
Stay alive til morning.
Tons of great bars downtown! The Brakeman is great and walking distance to ford field.
Windsor is infamous for its ballet’s. Plus it’s a 35% discount with the current exchange rate.
I didn't include the Windsor Ballet because I don't know the current status of the tunnel or what Canada is like now. Do the girls at the Million Dollar have plexi in front of them?
Funny side note, growing up a suburban kid the drinking age in Michigan was 21 like everywhere else in the states. It was 19 in Windsor (Which is south of Detroit, so I always tell people I used to have to go south to get to Canada) so basically every weekend it was almost like a class reunion in Canada for all of us suburban kids. Getting drunk in another country and crossing borders to get home. Damn I miss the late 80's.
Yes, it's nothing like it used to be. Downtown at least is very safe and has great places to hang.
Just pretend your in GTA. You’ll fit right in.
Pit Row
Ya it’s great nowadays especially around events. Just got back after spending the night out here… tons of people out and about
FYI, Lafayette was closed down for a rat issue for a while. It was back up to code and open again in October.
There are tons of great mexican places. I’d put Mi Pueblo and Las Galanes above Xochimilco’s, but you can’t really go wrong with any of them. If you want fancy and close to the stadium, Bakersfield is just up Woodward. There is also a badass taco truck near the train station that specializes in birria.
Batch Brewery is excellent, same with Motor City Brew Works.
Downtown is perfectly safe now, it’s nothing like it was 15 years ago.
Xochimilco’s is about the best I've had in the city but if you want the best in the area in my opinion you gotta hit ElCharros on the east side. When we go home my wife will make me stop there before we visit relatives. Hahaha

If you're a White Stripes fan, go visit the Hotel Yorba. Didn't know it was real until we went to the race a few years ago and drove past it. And FYI, I think you need a passport to even drive across the border now don't you? Or did that get pushed back again? Or maybe only if flying or on a boat, not driving. I don't remember. But check before going, may get in to Canada but not back.
Buddys pizza shouldn’t even be called pizza.
you mid west guys are crazy
Buddys is Detroit style and delicious. Being a New Yawker I understand your bias though. I'm not a Chicago style fan myself. We have a place here in Holly MI called the Red Devil that makes the best traditional pie you will ever run across
Another cuisine style we have in the D can be had at one of the old school polish restaurants. Best perogies and dill pickle soup you will find anywhere!
The best. I was raised on that stuff. But be warned, Polish Village Cafe in Hamtramck only takes cash and there isn’t an ATM inside.
Polonus is about 15 minutes south of downtown in the suburb of Wyandotte and is just as good, if not better.
Hotel is kind of in the hood and is a residence for transients. It’s worth stopping for a picture though.
Passport, passport card, or enhanced ID needed to cross border now. The card or ID are acceptable for border crossings by land and (I believe sea).
Gone are the days of just shooting over to Windsor for a few hours without being hassled. YMMV though.
There is a Joe’s in Ann Arbor now, it tastes just like the Manhattan ones I’ve grabbed slices at!
Supinos is also solid for NYC style.
Haha, honestly NY pizza is ok. I understand the Chicago Shepards pie called pizza and I’ve had it near soldier field. It’s alright. I just haven’t cared for really any pizza I’ve had in Michigan. I’d rather eat gas station pie than buddies. Hoping to find one as good as the real deal in Italy at some point in the states
I can get down with the conies though, those suckers are good.
never been up to Holly, always A2-Pontiac - Dearborn areas. Will certainly check it out if I’m in town!
