Hello,
Had an awesome incident this weekend where after 20 minutes of total use, my brand new Fly Formula Carbon fell off my bike in the gravel pits at Rt 62 mx. I guess a it landed on a stone just perfectly to damage the shell (eps and all that is fine).
That said, I’m guessing helmet is toast now. My question is what am I giving up by going to a Formula CC? The carbon was the most comfy helmet I’d ever worn and the weight was awesome (coming from a moto 9 flex). So Ideally I don’t want to give up any comfort, venting, etc. But would the weight gain be significant? Safety the exact same?
Trying to minimize the heartache of burning hundreds and hundreds of dollars but don’t want to compromise safety…
I think it is about 50 grams heavier but for me they fit a little different so make sure to try it on first. I wear a large in the carbon and a medium in the CC and they feel almost identical on my head with the medium CC feeling just a tiny bit tighter than the large carbon.
From your picture it is hard to tell but did it crack the shell or just mark it up?
Don’t even know what I’d describe it as. It’s like a gouge, with a few strands of the carbon overhanging. Never actually dropped a helmet but crazy to think the angle it must have hit the pebble at to do this, considering it fell from seat height. Sucks, very expensive ride it was lol
Neither do I ever normally. It was on handle bars. I had never been to Rt 62, didn’t realize there was just gravel pits and nowhere to gear up or put anything (unlike RamJam). I put it on handlebars instead of ground so I could go to my trailer and grab my gear bag to put it in. Someone bumped the bars and it fell off. Didn’t want it on the ground since parents were letting their kids jump all around out stuff playing football…

I may get burned for asking but why is it toast? I mean a rock of the back of a 450 could do the same?
I’m not completely sure it’s toast, since interior is 100% good. Waiting to hear back. Just preparing myself in case I need a replacement.
I really think it’s fine but I’m curious now as well, personally I wouldn’t worry but I could also be way off lol
maybe JT could settle it
email fly and send them a few pictures and ask them what they think.
The polystyrene wasn't compromised so the energy management part of the helmet is fine, That is basically cosmetic Damage. I used to rep for Fly, HJC and Arai. Run it! I did the same thing with a brand new Arai road race helmet and still use it to this day.
I'd still ride it. helmet drop 'gets the first crash out' for the superstitious types right...
Sizing shouldnt change from the Carbon to the CC. Medium and Large use the same shell, and pads are only $20 I believe, so regardless you will be dialed.
I play with these helmets everyday in shops, and if I put on a carbon and CC blind folded it would be a total guess which one is which. The CC is just that good. IMO, its the best helmet for the price.
Ordered one!
I am erring on the side of caution as recommended by Fly, don’t want to take the risk if the helmet is at all compromised. I spent years chasing a boxing career and hit my noggin too many times.
thanks for the help everyone
It it where me I would ride it. If you’re really worried about it you could maybe do an epoxy job on it to make sure it can’t delaminate anymore.
not to mention any repair job would be covered by the goggle strap. The shell alone isn’t going to dictate whether it’s safe or ready to go. Unless you plan to push that shell to its limit I would run it.
I’d run it with no worries. In a crash hard enough for that chip to make a difference, you have bigger problems.
I don’t think the cc will do that if dropped. It might get scratched but that is it.
I'd say buff it out, it's fine.
By the way , why is your location shown as California when your talking about riding at Ohio tracks?
Haven't seen it in person but from the photos I'm pretty sure the helmet is fine

But I also live in Florida and California depending on the time of year. But why is this relevant lol
If you still want to use it as a backup, get some fiberglass resin, use foil tape to surround the damage and fill the area with just enough epoxy to patch the hole.
It will, at a minimum, bond all those loose fibers with the shell again and reduce the likelihood that crack acts as a stress riser.
If it's a large I'd buy it off ya cheap.. lol.. I'm only an hour from 62 or ramjam..
I would run it. Will Fly help you out on a replacement at a deal? Might be worth asking
I might be an irresponsible, but I would not even considere that there can be an actually dowgrade to the protection that the helmet will offer because of that..... I would use it without questioning it
Fly can't tell you it's fine, too much liability man...but I bet whoever you talked to wanted to say run it.
Yeah the weave is a little compromised, but not really in a structural way. I would take the advice of the other guy and epoxy it to make sure there are no stress risers, and run it or at least keep it as a backup.
It doesn't hurt to ask...just be kind about it. I sent my Bell helmet to them for an inspection after a crash....they wound up sending me a new helmet. I thought that was way above and beyond what would be expected. I've been wearing Bell ever since (at least until i got the Moto 10 and the thing won't fit my head).
Just got a CC and had it custom painted.
Some helmet companies do offer prorated crash replacement discounts. I can not recall which ones ,or one. But I have seen it offered so it's worth asking . Even if you already ordered another helmet ,worst case they say no.
