Johnny and Bailey were the reason I bought a CR250 in 1982, they both made riding look so smooth, fast and stylish.
I should have bought a RM250, I got my ass handed to me all year by guys on Suzuki’s, lol! Probably because I was slow as hell, but at least I looked like the fast guys (in my mind!)
This is the stuff that makes Vitalmx great!
All those sandy laps at Indian Dunes really paid off . . . !

I’ve never heard that before; Johnny O’s first pro race on a 500 was at MXdN and the US’s first win?
If that’s correct, that’s an amazing fact. You can’t even imagine that happening these days.
His house in Simi off of 1st Street.
One of the best moto photos….
What race was it that he had a broken foot/leg, took the cast off, put his Scott boots on and raced?
Does anyone know how the boot gaiters came about? O’Mara basically invented, or at least popularized, a product that nobody really needed but everyone bought. He must have made a fortune! Or at least somebody did.
This thread is so full of winning.....
...and man, the works era....what can I say.....that was the coolest era to have personally witnessed.
Not hondaland but very close to his house in simi valley......1989
End of 1st street long before they developed it and it became Long Canyon.
Pit Row
Man, I miss those days. I grew up in Calabasas off Mulholland HWY....the Santa Monica MTNs were our playground. Fire roads, single track trails, hidden tracks all over the place. I could ride out of my driveway thru the meadows into the mountains. Used to be able to ride from Mulholland to overlook the 101 going over the pass.....all of that is now high end neighborhoods.
Back then, most of the neighbors were cool with us riding too. Especially the horse owners....the motorcycle gang kept the trails "smoothed" out. Of course we were respectful of the horse riders and always shut down coming upon them.
These days....I imagine you'd be arrested and bike impounded for what we enjoyed back then. Man, I had a great childhood/young adult time.
They were built into the Mugen outfit when they got them.

what ever happened to "boot savers" LOL
I don’t care what anyone says that is a full on huge triple and this has to be 85 or earlier as Johnny ‘O is still on a works bike. imagine being in this group that truly pioneered all of this. the first on bikes that could do it.
Nice picture, and great thread!
I had one of those Toyota longbed trucks back in the day. Thats where the similarities with me and O'Show end though. LOL!
