Word is Mike Brown could easily qualify for a national, makes me wonder could Bradshaw score points? He's younger than Brown ( I think ) apparently rides often and is still plenty fast ( very active with his fly deal ). How awesome would it be to see Damon Bradshaw on the line?
Poll
They're both 50 years old.
It's one thing putting in a fast lap to qualify, and it's an entirely different thing going fast for 30+2 and scoring points.
I don't think he'd score points.
The only points Bradshaw is scoring are the ones w/ his wife. 50 comes with it’s own risk management program that wants nothing to do with scoring points.
I don't think either score points... And it's questionable if they could qualify, but possibly. One lap is different than a whole moto.
I've ridden with Damon in the last two years at our local track. I was able to keep up with him on my smoker and even put a wheel in at times. We had a great time duking it out and it was so cool to ride with a legend like Damon. Unfortunately, I'm nowhere close to scoring points... Maybe able to qualify on the right day... He's still one fast SOB, quality dude as well!

I don't think Bradshaw could qualify for a national. Brown? Yes, I think he still could qualify on the right day. Points? Likely not.
Anyone know who is the oldest to qualify and score points? Dowd?
I know that Dowd podiumed at 43/44, but I don't know of he's the oldest to score points. I would assume that he is the oldest to have done so.
No offense, but he wouldn't even make the motos.
Remember a few years ago when Vital was insisting that Keefer would likely score a few points at Hangtown or Glen Helen? Yeah....
Mike Brown doesn't have to qualify. He can just show up for moto 1 if he wants. (Unless they have changed the rules about former champions.)
I don't think he'd score points, but he'd embarrass a lot of the backmarkers.
Bradshaw would have it tougher, but I think he'd qualify.
Like BroFoSho said, he’s not qualifying and sure a shit isn’t scoring points. That isn’t any disrespect to Damon, he’s decades past his prime and hasn’t been a professional racer in a long time. Thinking he’d score points is disrespecting the guys out there currently making the motos.
Bradshaw is closer to scoring points than Stewart is to beating Jett on his 17hp KX125.
Suck it Lenny.
Carson Brown scored points on a YZ250, maybe Damon could get one or two at High Point
I think they changed the past champions rule. Chuck Sun cashed it in a Washogal one year and it did not go well. It’s probably a within a few years post retirement or something like that rule now.
Didn't Keefer almost make the top 40 when he tried? Part of his issue was mental/getting too nervous/not riding like himself if I recall. I would think that would not be an issue for Bradshaw and he could at least make the motos. He would certainly need to have some dedicated training to think about cracking the top 20.
What year was that ? The most recent Sun is listed in the vault is 1983
I’m not sure on the year. We would need confirmation from someone else.
Maybe DC can chime in but I haven't seen him post here in awhile
I was actually there that day and it did not go well. I know he said it was mental and he felt like he could’ve qualified had he not let the pressure get to him but I personally don’t think so.
Keefer is awesome and amazing on a dirt bike but I think most people forget how incredible even the back markers at that level are.
Brown would probably come closer to making the field at a national, but scoring points would be hard. He is in awesome shape though and could do the 30 minute motos I feel, but to maintain top 20 speed would be a stretch.
Pit Row
I remember watching at Washougal…one year in the mid 90s Chuck raced a Husaberg. Didn’t have to qualify with the past Champ rule and I remember him having a crash or stall and having to come down the uphill backwards.
I think that Brown could qualify at the right tracks. One of the local pros in New England has been doing some of the bigger am races with his kids this year and has come in second and 3rd with Brown and Keefer both racing. He was close at Southwick this past year . 38th in times and not sure what happened in the LCQ race. Brown at the right track should be able to put down l a lap fast enough to make the motos. But who knows how he would do in the motos. 30=2 is a lot longer than the Vet motos run. If he could run the entire moto at speed then who knows. Its interesting that it is even a question. It would be cool to see Brown line up at one of his favorite Nationals and see what he could do.
Yeah , Chuck did try it a few years after he retired. I don't remember the exact year , maybe 85' - 87'? I don't think he finished both Moto's. I remember that he didn't really look slow out there , but got bad starts and got shuffled to the back even further.
I could be wrong on the years. I almost think it was later than that. Maybe 88' - 90'? It was a shock seeing him line up. I remember that much.
Hey Wes , yep I remember that too. Hell , now that I think of it , I think it happened mid 90's ? Kind of around the very beginning of when the 4 stroke nationals were becoming a thing.
Chuck's last full season was 1983 on a Maico. I did a pretty deep dive in the Vault but the older results only go to 23rd place overall.
I do not think Bradshaw would qualify.
Pretty sure it was ‘95 that Sun rode the 250 National on a a big Husaberg. I may have a program I could dig out later to confirm.
I think Sun was doing some PR/ development work for Husaberg back then, getting the brand some exposure. Also remember O”Mara maybe using the past national champion rule to get into the 1993 Southwick National on a PC CR125… I could be wrong… If Brown scored points, would that effect his LL vet class eligibility ?
I swear, some people have way too much time on their hands.
Brown wouldn't need to qualify, Bradshaw would.
Unless something has changed, I think that both would have to have medical clearance from a doctor as they are 50+. That might be a SX rule only, though, but I think it is for both.
What do you mean he wouldn't need to qualify?
Riders need to qualify in order to line up for the motos.
I think that past champions are admitted to the gate, but if they wanted a pick higher than 40 then they’d obviously have to earn that. But even if their times were outside the top 40, don’t they still get to line up in the motos?
Honestly can’t remember the last time the rule was even used.
Zero percent chance. There is absolutely no way a 50 year old former champion wants to put in the work necessary to train his way into points paying shape.
