To the OP: I just saw a Husqvarna e-bike in person the other day at a motorcycle shop. (Several of them, in fact.) They look good, with decent componentry, but I think the bicycle brands are ahead of the curve a little bit. Here are some brands I think will give you pretty good bang for the buck, and will likely outperform the Husky:
-Commencal
-YT
-Canyon

I've had a Levo for about 4 years now and every time I ride it, I'm happy I bought it. They are so much fun!

I have a Specialized Turbo Levo. Love it. It allows me to push the envelope further than I would on a non-ebike, since if I get carried away and find myself too far away from home/truck and totally exhausted, I can use max e-assist to get back.
The Turbo Levo is a good compromise, price wise. Around $6K when I bought it a couple of years ago. Zero issues so far, although I'm more of a casual trial rider than a ripper.

Go for the specialized. Having local dealer and warranty support is huge for ebikes.

YT has sort of a bad rap in the MTB world with them being awful when it comes to warranties. It sounds great to save money but when they can't provide warranty parts for months and month at a time, its a real kick in the nuts.

Me and my wife both have Orbea’s. She has a rise and I have a wild. hers is the ep8 rs motor and smaller battery which I’ve come to enjoy riding more than the wild recently. You can adjust the power settings and it still gives plenty of juice. Although the wild is so much better going downhill, the Bosch motor on the wild is also much louder.

Thing I like about the rise is I can ride it like an acoustic with my buddy who doesn’t have an ebike...yet.

That's the exact wrong way to think about it. My idiot buddy would just consistently drop me until I got pissed off and bought an e-bike. Problem is I bought his used bike and he still has a faster bike than me...... and is in better shape. lol

YT had supply chain issues before having supply chain issues was cool.

Take a look at the Giant Trance 29er E pro. A lot of bike for the money. Absolutely love mine. But no way I’m gonna miss a day of twisting a throttle to ride an E bike. Like so many others have said- it’s a great training tool but IMO will never take the place of a motorcycle.

Not understanding that but ok. I’m saying I ride it without any assistance (powered off) with him no problem.

I would ride with a friend, and I was on an analog bike while he was on a Turbo Levo. He would ride it in assist and drop me when we would ride together. It aggravated me enough that I said screw the analog bike and got the Turbo Levo.

What I'm saying is if you ride it with assistance maybe you will give him the nudge to head to the dealer. lol

It’s absolutely amazing how much knowledge is available on Vital. This thread is one of many examples. Filter out the BS, and all is well.

Demo or try as many as you can. Even riding around the dealer's parking lot. I would try 29" and 27.5" wheels to feel the difference.

I wouldn't buy anything that isn't supported through a local dealer. One day the electronics will need repairs or replacing and if you can't, the whole bike will be salvage.

I was able to demo a Kenevo SL, Levo, Trek Rail, and Cannondale Moterra Neo; I bought a Kenevo and love it. I have two riding buddies that grew up riding moto and we all have a version of the Kenevo with 27.5" wheels.

Enjoy!

So what’s the deal with riding an e-mtb on mtb trails where you’re not technically allowed to? It seems like the general consensus is that they don’t “harm” the trails anymore than a regular bike but governments haven’t caught up on changing regulations yet? I want to get an e-mtb but don’t want to have to worry about where I can and can’t ride. Do you just get dirty looks from traditionalists every once in a while? Are there people deep in the woods wearing high vis vests and writing tickets to e-bikes that ride by?

I bought a Santa Cruz Bullit and love it! The bike rips. I bought it used on Pinkbike.com and saved thousands. Good source for used bikes.

I would ride anyway and not even give a second thought. A 750 watt ebike isn't going to damage anything, period. My Luna X2 you could raise the argument because I can break the rear wheel loose if I really wanted to (2500 watts) but I don't have mtb trails near me so it doesn't matter in my case. Even still, with a 2500 watt ebike you would have to try like hell to leave any sort of imprint on a trail so a normal ebike, no freakin' way.

I got a Luna Cycles X2 last winter with the Ludacris option and that bike is amazing!! I have just as much fun on it as my dirtbike. I believe the motor is capable of 2500 watts vs the 750 that the other ebikes are restricted to and on a 50lb mountain bike it is so much fun. You can basically go anywhere/climb anything on it. I find the extra oomph it can put out makes it fun to jump stuff that you'd never be able to on the restricted bikes but for normal trail riding I have it in the lower power modes. Kinda nice to have that extra power for when you get a bug up your ass and want to get sendy.

I researched for months before buying it and it was between the Luna and the Intense Tazer MX Pro. I'm glad I went with the Luna.

Thank you for posting this. I was possibly going to start a new thread as the Luna looks like a really good option. I have really been eying the X2. Did you get the RockShock addition? I have knee issues and I like the "throttle" option it has, it looks like you can just use that and not have to pedal if you need to. For the price and build it looks like a really good bike.
It's a fantastic bike. I upgraded it to handle the riding that I do so I put really good wheels and suspension on it as well as a right hand twist throttle which I use in situations that I would normally ratchet pedal. With the Ludi V2 option which I opted for, they recommend you don't just rely on throttle only as you will overheat the motor eventually. I've never came close to an overheating issues but I also am always pedaling along and only ever use the throttle if I'm dicking around doing wheelies or really slow techy stuff where I would normally be ratchet pedaling. This bike, in my opinion, truly bridges the gap between mx bike and mtb bike. The power to weight ratio is perfect. I have never felt the need for any more power while riding this bike. You can loop it out from a stand still if you crack the throttle haha. Coincidentally I've yet to have any drivetrain issues whatsoever. Still riding stock chain and gears with no sign of wear.

I have a blast on this thing jumping stuff and just straight riding through the woods (no trail, just right through the woods) like hard enduro but on a mtb. I'll go on Google Earth and find something that looks interesting and just take off through the woods to get to it. You can literally go anywhere on this thing and the battery lasts forever.

Also an advantage I found to having a twist throttle is when jumping if you're a little nose down you can panic rev it and it'll lift the front end a bit so jumping this bike will feel way more familiar to someone coming from a motocross back ground which is what I wanted. I get why the Specialized bikes are so expensive. It's because they use top shelf components throughout. I did that with my X2 (upgrades) and I'm right around the cost I would have had into a Specialized bike but the X2 is 4 times as fast haha.

Best advice in this thread. Buy from a local dealer. At some point you'll need them.

Also may want to look into events like Outerbike where you'd be able to demo bikes of all kinds. They have an event upcoming in Bentonville....

Here's mine for reference.. Base 2022 Alloy Turbo Levo ($5500) with quite a few upgrades. I like building my bikes frame up with components i like, so the base alloy model was my cheapest option. I'd definitely recommend the Alloy comp at $7500 for anyone else. The Comp build is bullet proof!

Also, do your research on these Super Light (SL) e-bike models and form your own opinion. With a motor the weight isn't as important. I'll take Torque and Range over weight savings on the e-bike all day long.

Bang on - If you suffer from a terminal case of upgradyitis then this is usually the best way to go.

I just built up an Orbea Wild FS HS20 - Swapped out shock and forks for DVO coil and Oynx 170mm with Vorsrpung Smashpot, Swapped brakes for Magura MT7's with a 220mm rotor out front and ditched the 12 speed - for my old mint condition 10-spd XT Dr's (with Rad cage) - and an 11-42 cassestte. Then usual personal stuff like bars, stem - angle set for 1 degree slacker (and better sealing from stock).
I just gotta wait for the rainpocolypse to finish so I can ride it.

Get the best base bike with the best motor and battery you can get. Everything else is just wankery

I'm sure not many on this forum give 2 shits about my opinion but I backpack in CO a lot and I've seen that bikes have a huge impact on the trails where they're allowed and e-bikes only makes that impact larger. If you think for even a second you can understand that any mechanical advantage on top of human power will translate to damage on the trail. I'm fine with having bike and e-bike trails vs no bike areas, but keep the bikes where they belong and stay off the hike only trails.

How does an ebike create more damage to trails than a non e-bike?? There is no real difference - the power is minimal as hell, it's not ripping up trails with it. One could argue that you can get braking bumps on uphill trails due to increased speed and the trail not being designed for such speed. As for the weight difference - Ummm, do you also advocate for only light weight people being allowed to ride - sorry - over 75kg, you'll do to much damage to the trail.

*i do agree with staying off hike only trails tho.

Never been on a MTB e-bike.

Would you say the speed you can maintain everywhere is much higher (due to the e-motor), so even 'boring' trails become fun, small bumps that didn't do anything are suddenly small launch pads due to 50% higher speed?

Or is the above wishful thinking? Is it really about easier to climb and same fun on the way down?

When were they ever not allowed? I don’t understand why this is even relevant.

Trek Rail or Specialized Levo. Pick a color.
8/21/2022 7:58am
Alright bros, heres my dilemma. The local dealer will do a straight trade for a Levo comp alloy. In all honesty I’d rather have the cash but feel like I’ll be sitting on this bike tryin to sell it for awhile. The bike I’m lookin to sell/trade is a 2020 Tx300i. Put an FC tank on it with factory husky wheels (19” rear). Has 6.8 hours on it. With knee replacement comin up, how realistic is having a mountain bike? I look at it as good PT. I’m thinkin if I can straight trade but keep the factory wheelset I might do it. Should be able to sell those. What would y’all do in this situation?

I have been eying this cnc machined finish brand.
Currently on a Orbea WILD Fs but this thing with 190mm suspension looks like my next one : https://polebicycles.com/voima/
Good value for money and great looks!
