I don't know what current happenings in Moto made Roeder pop into my mind, but I wonder whatever happened to him and if he still follows moto.

I hope I got the spelling correct.

Wouldn't it be cool if he and Marty Tripes meant up once a year and had a beer and talked about old times?

I believe you have it right. He claimed Tripes bike I think and raced it a few times. Wonder if he still owns it? Good question.

If I remember right, cycle magazine disassembled it and shot pictures of every single piece on it comparing it to stock pieces.

it was some outstanding machine work.

Cycle magazine had the best, full scoop at the time. Shit was pretty detailed and is still available on the interwebs.

1979 was a pretty cool year for works bikes, and the RC250 was probably the one that most of us ‘younguns’ lusted after the most, with Hannah’s OW a very close second.

If I'm not mistaken Terry Goode ended up with that bike. And as faint memory recalls, the guys at Cycle magazine decided the name on the tank was the same as the stocker. And that was about it.

I've got one of those clutch baskets. Smile Cut from one piece of steel and uses the stock insert. I think it's about 10 oz less than the stocker.

He did. I'm not sure if Terry Good made the original contact or its was Scott Stegar, but there was a pic at the time of Roeder pulling the bike out of a shipping container in storage.

At the time the 79 RC was a double down tube frame center port engine, while the 79 stocker still had had the single center spar and offset exhaust port, so there were big differences just there between the 79 RC and stock CR. Hubs, suspension, swingers, etc all factory and different. The CR got the twin spar frame/center port in 80.

My recollection without rereading the article is that the port timing was modestly changed, and the bike ran a stock E ignition (not the 80 model).

Yeah, that Cycle magazine had a separate article just about the claim events and subsequent rule revisions.

I have the swing arm from a Honda Factory RC250. It's painted red from when they were still trying to disguise them to look like stockers. It's made from really thick aluminum with beautiful welds. Got it in a box, in storage, for probably 25 years!

Scott Stegar had posted somewhere asking for information on the bike. I raced and knew that one of our local Nor Cal pros, Jerome Hieberger had raced it a couple of times locally so I got Scott Jerome's contact info and Scott was able to contact John Roeder through Jerome and buy the bike.

Terry Good in Chicago owns the bike now. It will be displayed at the international motocross museum fund raiser on Wednesday September 21st at Pinstripes in Chicago right before the MXON at redbud.
