Right at the very start Harris was saying the reasons about there being no way in hell would he even try to reproduce parts from it and had nothing to do with it...and the way he explains time/costs...they are all pretty compelling reasons why he wouldn't be putting up money for the bike.
And the way Harris and Brennon interviewed...they were totally off script and the way they explained their version of events was pretty telling it was all based of real actual memories....unless they are both really REALLY good at lying, you can see why so many are kindof siding with the kid being shafted.
Sounds like a deal.
Ooor….maybe you are full of shit 😂
So kid drops the claim and then his sponsor drops him. That just goes to show that you better fully commit once you decide to do something like this because you are losing your sponsor as soon as you put in that claim.
Have they not thought about the fact that if they "punish" the kid by stripping him of all of his sponsors and support he will have nothing to lose at that point?
Guess what happens next...
He goes to the next race and IMMEDIATELY claims the bike again and this time he doesn't back down because he has nothing to lose and the MX Mafia has no leverage.
But there are a few undeniable facts.
A kid tried to claim a bike, completely and 100% within the rules.
He had some meetings with a few “industry guys”
He didn’t end up claiming the bike.
Seems like industry guys steamrolled a 17 year old kid acting 100% within the rules.
A few of them no doubt should be fucking embarrassed and ashamed of themselves.
There is an old saying in the car racing world “there are no gentlemen in racing”
I would have hoped that was not true in amateur MX (no matter how serious it is these days)
But I guess the saying applies to amateur MX too.
Claim, don’t back down, threaten to publicize every detail frame down and internally if any action is taken against him.
Kid lost the bike AND got shafted.
Pit Row
My take:
Seems like this kid was pretty obviously intimidated and/or coerced out of claiming the bike; either directly, or indirectly (via actions) of the promoter, trainer, Brian Deegan, or Yamaha (or all of the above).
He may have denied that and dropped the claim, but it doesn't make sense to walk away from that bike for that price, especially when he would probably make recoup some cash via YouTube video monetization.
What Weege said does make sense with what I've heard on other podcasts (the Whiskey Throttle Show). Mitch Payton talked pretty extensively a year or two ago about how PC supplies parts for big name teams where they wouldn't want that info getting out. I'm not saying PC was supplying parts to Star, only that I'm sure that's common.
I doubt Star was running a full factory motor, given they're not running factory fork coatings, and the bike would likely sound audibly different to the trained ear.
If the part about the agreement is true, I hope Yamaha follows through and gets the kid a ride on a factory bike/a couple of motors.
Complete s*** show.
Some local Honda or KTM dealership should swoop in for the PR win. It's not like the kid is slow if he's racing with Deegan.
Looks like the dealership is Rallye Motoplex per past instagram postings.
