This may be dumb, but would modifying the claiming rule so that the person claiming the bike had the option to stay anonymous have helped prevent all this mess?

Of course the factories would never go for it and of course if Brennan were to make youtube videos on the bike like he said he would, it would have come out that it was he who claimed the bike and maybe Yamaha would have had to follow through with their alleged threat...Or would they? And Brennan would have still gotten that Star bike at the end of the day. Just a thought.

The idea of being blackballed in the moto industry for doing something that is allowed in the rulebook is ridiculous.

Not a chance I could change your mind.

Once people have made up their mind on something, no amount of evidence usually changes it.

Personally I think that would only add to the cloud that hangs over the rule. It would reinforce the fact that the claimer is doing something that requires protection.

I think for things to change, the culture of mini parents has to change. And that wont happen.

The culture of the race teams has to change, and that wont happen either. They're fiercely competitive, that's at the root of all this.

I dont expect the moto parents to start claiming more often to de-stigmatize things. They're all hypocrites in this arena.

The people that care the most with the biggest moral high ground are the fans here. We could start a go-fund-me so claims happen every year. And we sponsor some kid to get a free PC or Star bike. And I bet you most would turn the offer down because they dont want the trouble.

The party in the middle of this that I think needs to just do their damn jobs is the AMA. Everyone else involved did what we'd expect them to do, and was even overzealous in their approach. There's one party that did the bare minimum and they're largely responsible for letting this get out of hand, and that is the sanctioning body. I also think if the claiming rule is amended, never again is a parent allowed to let their 17 year old "kid" handle the situation. Dad must be brought in. And impound cannot be some makeshift on the fly decision to store the bike in a promoter's personal toy hauler - what a total shit show.

As far as keeping it anon.
Only so many riders in a class - I'm sure there would be accusations and finger pointing especially accusing their rivals. Could lead to more drama who knows.

MX Sports/The AMA needs to attend to the issue and put their foot down rather than sweep it under the rug or try to down play it. Until then nothing will change and we will see the same drama again. There's a lot they could do as far as setting an example to make sure something like this doesn't ever happen again. They wont though.

You're right, it is irrelevant, unless he is caught lying about it.

Because then I question how the Donnie/Walker meeting went down. Because that is the core incident in who/when/why the claim was dropped.

The KIDS story may be called into question…but doesn’t change who called who.

His story has always been conjecture by nature. His supposition is that external pressures were placed on his dealer, and he’s surmising the chain of communication. That has always been speculation on his part. I doubt that the dealer told him that person X called person Y, who called their counterpart person Z…. He just said, buddy I’m getting heat over here and it’s from the top.

How do we know it wasnt Matt Walker whom was making the threat on behalf of Yamaha, without ANY direction from Yamaha. Wouldnt that absolve Yamaha in all of this? Or have the mob already sold their blue bikes in protest?

The most critical junction in all of this is that meeting. It didnt have Star involved or Deegan or Cotter. Possibly not even Brennan's dad. And it's this meeting we know the least about.
The meeting we know the least amount is when Yamaha made him the offer to go away. Who made the offer? Walker?

People see what they want to see. Case in point, you think you've seen me call Brennan's dad a "shitty parent". When in fact those words have never come out of my mouth nor have I personally felt that way about the guy.

We dont know. Not even Brennan's account is clear.

He states that Walker was texting his sponsor. Then he lists how he thinks it went down between Yamaha and his sponsor.

He never states that he spoke directly to his dealership. He never even explains how he knew the contents of Walker's text exchange. Did Walker show him the text messages? If so, why not say so.

I mean, he point blank claims a Yamaha employee admits to him (and a group of people) that the bike is a works motor. That's a heck of a thing to leak. But cannot say how he knows Yamaha was pressuring his sponsor. In fact, he never clarifies if his sponsor actually pressured Brennan directly on behest of Yamaha. It was all "I think" and so I didnt want my sponsor in trouble. Coulda been Walker passing the message, coulda been the dealership, coulda been Donnie Yamaha. Heck, it coulda been someone going rogue. It's not clear at all.

Everyone is upset that the kid dropped the claim. And yet we still dont really know how that came about.

Mob mentality indeed… Don, for the past four days you’ve been firing heavy toward anyone who dared have a different opinion to you.

So yeah, ‘Mob mentality’ fits… but for sure there’s more than one mob.

Star won’t be that silly- they nearly got stung once already. There will be a ‘stock’ (ish) motor in that bike until he turns pro now.
their stock (ish) motor and suspension im sure are much better then you and i can buy. or most likely cant buy which brings in a another rule- the production rule which isnt obviously followed either

Which is why Im asking the questions I am.

Because if Deegan was allowed in that meeting per rules of the custody exchange, that changes things. And if Cotter was asked to handle the situation by the AMA, that changes things also, especially if that was the protocol.

Both policies need serious amending.

And if the dad purposefully wanted his son to go thru the fire alone to learn some sort of life lesson, that also greatly changes the optics of all this. Im still blown away at how little it appears the dad was involved.
You're ridiculous. You obviously haven't watched the interviews or you would know why the father wasn't initially around.

I can’t say really, I don’t watch YouTube or know anyone in the nascar world. I have just heard some of my buddies that are into it and know I am into moto that have told me about the drivers and also watch the races and announcers have chimed in a few times about various situations.

I don’t have anything against the Deegan family and am not jumping on any bandwagon hate clubs on here. Brian use to irritate me with his Mulisha BS attitude and didn’t carry himself well, IMO.
But he seems to be a good father and has changed his ways as far as I can tell.

Brian has changed his ways alright. Went from hating on "the man" to being "the man", and his attitude now is "its good to be the king". Ironic how he has gone the total opposite of what put him on the map in the first place. As I put in another thread, the saddest part is Deegan doesn't even realize how hypocritical his behavior is based on what got him to where he is. Personally, I think he needs to stop being the moto-mini dad to Haiden. And Haiden needs to drop the whole Dangerboy schtick and start focusing on being a "professional" racer.
That is a really, REALLY good point.

Definitely not any ghost rides in the near future for the Deegan clan...

No. Deegan didn't race the Limited class. But the bike had parts on it that other racers don't have access to, And Star didn't want anyone else to have. And it potentially had an advantage over the other modified bikes. Hence the existence of the claiming rule.

just seeing this topic (yes, been away for a minute).

Anybody mind posting a basic summary?? With this many pages I'm sure there are several pieces of info peppered throughout this thread and I'd like to understand the basics without having to read 25+ pages.

Thanks in advance.

Typical world we live in today. Follow the rules and get fucked while all others cheating and protecting “the system” win.

Sad look for many “professional” adults in this situation

Don’t hate the player, hate the game! Give the kid his bike and STFU.

Minor "Brennan" tried to claim "Haiden's" bike.

Heads started to roll, adults acting like children. "Think little league coaches/dads"

Claim was retracted under "_______" circumstances.

A bunch of interviews and no accountability from either side.

I'm guessing the dad was smart enough to know EXACTLY how this would go....

You don't go to Loretta's and not know HOW the game is played within the industry, and he probably didn't want to be dragged through the mud and do interviews post-incident to clear his name.

Or maybe it should be just normal to be able to claim a bike.

I would be a top 10, or top 40 amateurs trying to make my way, I would just be so pissed off about this whole fiasco.

Some kids are just robbed their career because there are some twats coming in with 50k bikes, which is not how the amateur racing is. The rules are for everybody otherwise what is the point to even race ? Let us remove these factory bikes and we might see other talented kids coming up, kids that have the talent to make it instead of cheating their whole amateur career then do nothing and get the boot after a couple seasons.
