Just texted the wife, we may have to make a trip to Nara next month...

I recall last year he attributed some of his late season improvement during the outdoors to a suspension setting he discovered while testing the 450. So he's definitely comfortable on the bigger bike.

Considering the lack of success Japanese riders have had in the US historically and how much Japanese manufacturers have dominated this sport in the last 50 years, Jo really is on track to become one of the most decorated riders from his home country in history. Pretty cool we get to watch it unfold. I didn't think it was a big enough story when he became the first native born rider to win an AMA national this year, that's quite an accomplishment.

I'm confused on the "first native born rider to win an AMA nat this year?"

Yeah, kinda worded that bad. He is the first japanese born rider to win an ama national, which happened this year. (Red Bud)

Well, looks like the wife and I will be driving down to Nara on the 10th watching the race on the 11th and driving home on the 12th. Should be a good time. If I get the chance to meet Jo, I’ll see if I can get him to give Vital a shout out.

That'd be awesome, he's definitely and rightfully got some fans here.

Now he's back to his smooth and precise self, after the hectic supercross season, I'm sure he'll be great to watch on the 450 and he's really finding his feet now.

Also, one of our 86 Corollas came from fairly local to you originally I think, don't know the location any more specifically than Osaka, then it left the port over at Kawasaki for the UK.

Kai Oshiro has broken his collarbone. He would have been one of Shimoda's MXON teammates and also one of the guys wit the best shot of giving Jo a challenge at the Japan National this weekend. Now he'll miss both. Bummer.

Scratch my original post, I was thinking Akira Narita, not Watanabe.

The family and I are hitting the road for Nara tomorrow morning (Japan time). Depending on reception, I'll try and post a couple f updates from the track on Sunday.

Akira is a 1978 World Champion, and 1979 runner up to Harry Everts. Jo has not out performed Akira Watanabe, yet.

I think I found out how to watch this race. Track looks tight and will be interesting to see how quickly Jo can adapt.

The commentary was pretty funny. They kept talking about the big difference between AMA or World-level pace to their domestic Japan series. Jo was gone after a couple corners and was 3+ seconds faster per lap on a short track.

No timing but looked like Jo won by about 25-30 seconds.

Didn’t go watch qualifying, but I’ll be out there tomorrow for the race. Been threatening to rain most of the day in Nara (about an hour from the track), so hopefully it’s not a slopfest tomorrow.
