Love my 02-YZ 250. Have owned it for eight years and it's been probably the best bike I've ever owned and raced. Bought a new 4-stroke and rode it for six years and just couldn't get into it, actually hated it. Back to the 2-strokes for me.

My 03 that I picked up to rebuild right before bike prices skyrocketed in 2020. Only things I didn’t replace on the bike were the frame and cases. Best part of the Yz’s is the abundance of cheap parts.

Just rebuilt my 2003 YZ250 this past winter. It has 2015 YZ450f forks, updated plastics, and plenty of other goodies.

These pictures were taken at Hatfield McCoy trails and after this trip I had to go through the engine and do a whole rebuild. New crank, bearings, piston, everything. So while I had the engine torn apart, I had it vapor blasted and now the bike looks brand new.

Pic of me riding my Dad's 1999 YZ250 at Carnegie Cycle Park. I love my Hondas but they were Red Stickered and not allowed out there during this time of year. Those steel framed YZs kicked ass! He also had a stock 1997 WR250 that easily had the best stock motor I've ever rode, couldn't imagine what power it would put out if it had all the mods our race bikes did. I think MC used that motor when he first rode for Yamaha if I remember correctly.

Depending on the year of YZ and year of SSS you’re using, you might now have to change it. There is a write up on here where a guy went through everything on what’s needed and what years transfer over best.

Nice rebuild! My friend might be interested in that kind of setup! We'll work on his new YZ250 project after we finish installing the new tires and ion wheels on his truck this weekend.

I rode that 95 on Wednesday at njmp, it was an absolute riot. The engines amazing, so smooth and easy to ride. And it rips! Handling was predictable, brakes absolutely sucked but I got them figured out now lol.

It was scary at times with 20 year old bald tires and no brakes lol. Aim for the inside and hope to make the outside lmao.

2001 that @GE217 is just about finished up building for me.

I started off planning on a Mcgrath build, until I came across the PC front end on eBay, and decided to go for something a bit different. Couldn’t be happier with the way it turned out!

2014 Pro Circuit Showa A-kit forks and clamps
2009 Enzo built rear shock
Fully cerkoted and rebuilt engine
Polished swingarm and Subframe
Candy metallic powder coated frame
Bronze cerkoted Brembo front brake system. (Just waiting on the Luxon hanger)
And a ton of other fine details, everything on the bike has been worked on.

I have never felt so comfortable on a bike in 30 plus years of riding. Bike was completely stock. I was also 19 years old at the time so maybe that had something to do with it.

Fast forward to 2016 and I picked up a new YZ250 (aluminum frame obviously) and could never get as comfortable on it as I did with the 04 (steel framed) model. The bike was awesome but that cornering, compliance, and general ability to forgive mistakes was not on par with the 04.


I agree, the aluminum frame Yz 250's lose front wheel traction on me and then they would randomly knife in corners. Usually it wasn't something where I couldn't save it, my steel framed '00 to '04 didn't do that.
