When I think of whoops, I think of SX and skimming. Most tracks I ride (MI practice tracks) have rollers, but not legit whoops. They’re not an easy obstacle to properly build or maintain. I’m fine with not having to hit them lol
You can blitz ours, but after the recent rebuild they are pretty big and it's not easy. When they were beat down it was the fastest way thru, but it's not now. They will come around soon and then both jump and blitz options will be there again. They are not pro-level deep but they are difficult and will bite you bad.

We have more sketchy moments and crashes in the whoops than all other parts of the track combined. I knocked myself silly and damaged a shoulder in them last spring when I got the triple in wrong. Most public tracks aren't gonna take the risk of injuries, especially with pro-level whoops.

Ours are clay and really hold up well. The first build lasted 5 years with just minor repairs. I built them by starting with a 2' deep pad and then working from the far end backwards, piling and rolling each whoop as I went. The outside line has a bit of a tombstone jump to give you the pop to start the triple rhythm.

A few tracks around here have them. While good for most people they just wear me flat out lol.

No whoops in So Cal that I'm aware of.
If I'm wrong, someone clue me in so I can go ride them!

Whoops on an MX track make it NOT an MX track. Big rollers, sandy moguls, huge breaking bumps or acceleration chop yes...SX whoops...get outta here.

We get them on occasion at the tracks up here in NorCal. Usually just rollers or some variation. MMX will sometimes put some good clay ones on their main track.

I personally love whoops. Growing up, my parents owned a track and we had our supercross/arenacross pro track off to the side and we had huge whoops. I’d spend hours every day just filling in holes with shovels and taking the box blade off the tractor and packing them down. Then blitz. Rinse and repeat.

I fully understand the need for riders to learn and conquer whoops. If they plan on riding SX. If you only want to race MX on an MX track...get 'em outta here.

I ride sand tracks, so yes, proper MX whoops that form from the riders…not no man made ones that belong in SX

We used to have a practice track with smaller, not to deep, close together whoops, that you could blitz, it felt awesome as your bike skittered across the tops of them… the best method was to wheelie into them & then just hold throttle wide open…the tracks around me now have bigger rollers, almost small double/ triples… I think it is easier for the track owners to maintain the larger whoops, the smaller, tighter ones require more maintenance…we used to maintain our whoop section with hand shovels in between tractor rentals…… when you went into the section carrying a wheelie you had to be committed, if you let off the throttle too much you were going over the bars….

I couldn't disagree more. Those specifically you can skim, or turn into small doubles.

They're banned on tracks where I am and its insane. 95ft booter safe, whoops dangerous. I'd bring them back if I could.

One of the vet tracks had legit set of them. They were small and consistent, not like LACR's rollers. I wish I could remember where. Either way, you could absolutely hold the bike wide open and go Mach 5 through them. It was all good until the minis were sideways and upside down

My local sandpit has a loop that is all sandy whoops (as most NJ sandpits do). It has closer ones that are thigh deep and can only be skimmed, as well as wider spread rollers are probably waist+ deep. Totally uneven and exhausting. 5 laps and my heart rate is spiked 😂

Pictures from yesterday don’t really do them justice…

Not too common here in Minnesota. Having grown up in Iowa I would say the same thing. My practice track I built when I was teenager, we had a very small section. It took a lot of dirt & were difficult to maintain for an amateur track builder

Nothing better than a whoop section lined with 12" + diameter trees on both sides !!! Shocked

Funny that you bring that up. I lost a visor/cracked my helmet going through this section last year 🫣

We ride dirt bikes - we’re not the sharpest group 😂

Intermediate vet track at Elsinore has a short set..faster to jump though..

I love LACR's rollers..

Right? The tracks I used to ride here in d14 had plenty of naturally occurring whoops (many of them are very sandy or intermediate dirt).

The first photo reminds me of trail riding near Mio MI. Miles and miles of that stuff. Either you stand up and pin it or you slow waaaay down and suffer Smile

I never minded a place with an MX and an SX track. I know my skill level and I just didn't ride the SX track. When I go to places that incorporate SX whoops etc on the MX track...I'm out. I fully understand that the young guns that want to turn pro need to learn SX skills. But, us old fuggers still like to ride and go home in one piece. Balance fellas.

The International Track at Indian Dunes (my home track back in the day) always had some serious whoops!

The next set I build will be big and long (planning on 12) and there will be a bypass lane for us old guys. I like “semi-serious” whoops but the boy wants the real thing.

Refreshed our whoops Friday. Tilled lightly, then rolled them with my truck. Made them more consistent and took a little of the "peakiness" out. Now they can be both blitzed or jumped, as JB and Justin demonstrate:

Whenever I ride Washougal they take out the pro whoops and replace them with 6 little doubles right as I’m hitting the track. Happens every time.

You must not have ever noticed how many people have crashed over the Huffman Wright jump by mechanics area. That thing is sketchy AF..........

I do when I first rode my 03 yz250f there I pulled an unintentional whip nearly endo off it. I messed up the last whoop over jumped. Chopped throttle off the face which is a big no no on a 4 stroke. The engine braking nearly threw me over.

As the rear end tried to pass the front I pinned it bouncing off the rev limiter. Still don't know how I landed it. Bars swapped big time but I kept it pinned and it came out of it.

That was lap 2 of I'm gonna die on that bike lap 1 was after horse power hill. Make the left turn hit what I thought was the double jump that it had been for awhile. Surprise! It's a new whoop section and you just jumped 2 n a half into it on your new bike. Just remember my friend after practice what do you think of the new bike?

They put a long set of whoops in at Mountainview MX last week. 12 or so. PacWest raced there this weekend, and there were no shortage of crashes and injuries there, including my boy. IMHO not really a track issue. Also IMHO his Atlas neck brace broke the collar bone. Would have it been better or worse w/o it? Who knows.

You know, they could always do a split lane with whoops and no whoops. I personally would love real whoops considering i will never get to ride an sx track since you have to have a pro license. Plus I'm not trying to hit pro level whoops either, gotta learn somewhere, why not "the race track".

Everyone can get their fill with a little work believe it or not.

Most MX tracks have the rider carrying much more speed than an SX track. It's hard to deny that a good percentage of crashes (even for the pros) happen in a gnarly set of whoops. I just don't see a place for them on an MX track. I'd rather see an old fashioned creek crossing or mud hole than whoops outdoors. An alternate/bypass with a wall jump or deep sand would work as well.Wink

Yes sir...they did. Not only was maintaining them a pain but the number of ambulance rides increased greatly. If you can blitz the whoops like a mad man...I salute you. The average Joe can't or won't because medical bills suck.

I wish facilities could all have "pro" and "vet" tracks. That way the folks with skills could knock themselves out but the pussies like me could still have a little fun on a dirt bike.

Can't argue there, I feel the whoops are more so about liability than anything, multiple crashes will have someone lawyer screaming negligence and the track might be instructed by the insurance the need to modify the track, after getting sued of course.

A table top , even a big one is still safer than whoops for sure. The big jump will wreck one guy, big whoops id imagine will wreck rider after rider all day. Let me back track a little, if an owner has multiple tracks I would like to see them split up to an mx and novice sx track, and if a track is limited on space then I'd like a split lane with some safety measures of course so the guys trying the whoops don't dart off into the guys that are going around them. I think that could keep both parties happy.
