I was pretty surprised myself. I refuse to ride at any tracks that dont run split sessions for youth & then further split adults on ability. The sport is dangerous enough without that added risk

It’s a free country fella’s. If pro’s want to ride on a open practice day they should be able to and vice versa. Track operators are capable of splitting up the sessions if they need too

I agree it’s a free country. That’s why I won’t ride at a track that doesn’t have the little bikes separate from the big. Even an 85 out there the same time as me I will stop jumping when I get close. I don’t really like the 85s with the 50 and 65s. It is capitalism. So just stop going there! Boom. Take away capitalism and guess how many options you’ll have

As for the practice tracks I think it was roughly 20 years ago in the UK we stopped the free for all, now split into kids, adult novice & adult experts. Sometimes they will allow really fast kids into the adult classes. Remember when I first started riding dad's following their little ones around the track so people could clearly see little jr on his 50.

I think it’s crazy the days I ride GH and there’s 65s/80s doing a training class. I’m respectful and keep an eye out, but the bikes that are riding pinned wide open through traffic are the ones I worry about.

I don’t know what the answer is, riding in Oregon with broken up classes kinda sucks sometimes. So I don’t think it would work in California.

Perris has a mini night for small bikes.

I just watched that. Something’s not right about watching Cairoli slalom thru 80’s and triple digit vet practice pros at chicken licks. No disrespect to Perris, it’s better than ever…..but… but. I don’t know good on him for giving it a go. Could you imagine living under a rock the last few weeks and watching some Cairoli poser passing you then when he comes around to lap you, you notice he’s wearing a yellow flo RedBull helmet

I don’t understand that either. I live up here in NorCal and every track here separates bikes by size and skill. They have 20 minutes for little bikes, 20 for slower big bikes, and then a fast practice and then they repeat till close. If it’s a slow practice day they will still separate the kids and then add in the big bikes combined for the rest of the 40 minutes then keep repeating. Seems pretty simple

This is what got a track shutdown a few years back iirc, Coastline MX. Kid got really badly injured too which was the most unfortunate part.

Do we know for sure they’re just doing a full open practice? I’ve seen some days where pros will practice at full pace with the big bikes and then do some slow laps with the kids to hype them up. I just kind of assumed that was the case here cause having pros putting heaters down next to 65s is stupid.

Fast kids on minis should have the option to ride an adult/big bike class. That does not preclude having a class dedicated to the non-fast smaller bikes.

It's a "run what you brung" situation and it is not cool. Kids on 65's and 50's should absolutely have separate practices. 85's and up should be fine together and parents need to manage if their kids are too slow. The tracks have a catch 22 though because it takes people there to manage that, which costs $......and everyone already complains about track prep, gate fees, practice fees etc. If Glen Helen could charge $75 to practice, they could afford someone there to run practice like a race day.

I'll say one thing...TC looked a little freaked out in his Perris video by the novices that wouldn't pull over and get out of the race line. He almost ran over several. I can't believe KTM didn't have him on a private track.

I am always surprised by this as well, even my local Southern OH MX track divides up classes for open practice, but the most populated riding areas don't?

Sometimes they will allow really fast kids into the adult classes. I remember the dads out covering the little guys, they used to also have sidecars and quads out with the solos plowing the berms 😆

I still don’t see what you are all describing. You describe 4 year olds on PW50s riding with the fastest 450 riders in the world, yet nobody has provided any evidence this happens. This is exactly how overstepping and unnecessary legislation is approved, by using irrational fear for support.

The video I watched had one 85 rider that probably rides with the A/B group and most the triple digit riders were holding their own well enough to not be a big problem

Only if they are on an 85 or Supermini. No kid on a 65 is fast enough to ride with B class and above big bikes.

I am 38 and still ride the fastest practice and I almost always see an 85 or two in it and I am okay with that. To be that fast on any bike, you’ve put in enough hours to make me feel comfortable. Plus it’s 1 or 2 at most and I trust my skill around them as well.

I almost find it more scary when they have combined big bike practice and all the vets and novice riders are out there at once on giant bikes with minimal skill. Like a giant game of frogger.
