In Tinton Falls it'll be called pork roll. You'd might get a weird look if you call it Taylor Ham around there, but you are sort of close to the cutoff latitude for the change from pork roll to Taylor Ham.

There is a ton of food options to like about NJ. It is one of the state's more redeeming qualities. You'll have a near inexhaustible number of pizzerias that are all better than the best pizzeria you had at any of your other locations.

There's actually a pretty stellar BBQ place not far from Tinton Falls as well called Jersey Shore Barbeque. I can vouch for the Point Pleasant location, I've never gone to the East Brunswick location.
I can speak to the East Brunswick one. Its pretty good as well.

Some sunoco stations may have race fuel at the pump, but your choices will be limited and chances are its been sitting in the tank for years. You can check using the”fuel finder” on their site, but its not guaranteed. Better off buying pails from a dealer. Field of dreams sells VP pails at the track for some of the more popular fuels. You can check out their website to see which ones.

Try pork roll (or taylor ham depending on who youre asking) while youre here. Dont ask whats in it or how its made. Just eat it with egg and cheese on a hard roll and be happy. And get it at an actual deli (wawa’s great, but you gotta go for the real deal when it comes to that).

Thanks for the gas tips!

Am I about to fall in love with yet another local food?
I already fell in love with the Chicago dog when living there, deep fried cheese curds of Wisconsin and good Cuban sandwiches in South Florida. Not to leave out all the authentic Asian food in Sydney or baked goods of Sweden arghhhh!

Moving around gets harder and harder for all the local foods and beers I now can't consume anymore Sad

Thanks for the pork roll heads up lol

My biggest concern is finding a place to stay. We were planning on renting a house during the winter and buy before the summer rental prices kick in but I've just been made aware that finding and actually buying a house can be quite difficult.
We might have to go for an apartment should the house hunting drag on.

Guys just skipping right over Sleepy Hollow, Happy Ramblers, Evansville, and Doublin Gap? and Pagoda, Dutchmen, and Hurricane Hills barely got a mention?

To be fair, you run about a 50/50 chance of getting shot at with Jersey plates at many of those.... Whistling

House hunting is brutal these days in this area, be prepared to waive all contingencies and offer 20 percent over asking.

You will love our wonderful governor and how good you feel paying high tax to take care of the less fortunate. And ez pass works on our toll roads so it doesn't hurt as much paying 2.00 for what used to be .35 . Joking aside there are a lot of good people that live here

I'm also in Cecil County right on the Delaware border. In Cecil County is Fair Hill NMRA which has tons of XC mountain biking trails, and you have White Clay Creek park just over the border in Delaware with plenty of flowy trails. There are tons of other places for MTB within a few hours as well.

If you want to ride local outlaw trails and pits, and possibly some private tracks/trails, you can hit me up and I'll show you around. The closest public MX tracks were already mentioned with the exception of Pagoda (in Birdsboro, PA) and The Landing (in Easton, MD).

I’m really looking forward to the summer and trying out some of the MX in this region of the good ol’ US of A!

All of the info in this thread is very helpful/useful to me as well and I’ll definitely try to catch up with you Vital guys when I get out there and I’m able to head for the MX tracks & MTB trails!
Thanks to Freddyfred for making the original inquiry and to all the fella’s that posted the great info! 😎👍❗️
You hit pay-dirt and will have countless options to MTB when you stay in Port Deposit:

1) Fair Hill was already mentioned and would likely be 1/2 hour or so away from Port Deposit
2) Susquehanna State park is very close to Port Deposit (about 10-15 minutes right across the Susquehanna and is an underrated- and fortunately is usually pretty underutilized and uncrowded back in the trails).
3) Palmer State Park in Street, Md (also about 15-20 minutes from Port Deposit) isn't very large- but is very picturesque. You get a fast run to the bottom to Deer Creek and get a nice workout back up the hill.
4) Also- check out the massive Gunpowder Falls State Park system that offers multiple areas and endless trails throughout the State. My recommendation that is actually fairly close to Port Deposit and has great trails and smaller crowds is the Sweet Air Area in Baldwin, Md... probably about 1/2 hour from you in Port Deposit.

I work not far from Port Deposit and these are my go-to's when I sneak a long lunch from work or catch on the way home.

As far as dual-sport- you have awesome roads for exploring easily accessible from Port Deposit. You are very close to Rt 222 which takes you up into Pennsylvania and through Amish County towards Lancaster. You have endless back roads, sights and stops to explore if you point your bike due north.
Good luck on your move and enjoy your stay! Feel free to contact me if you have any questions when you arrive!

Thanks Maicocd!
I’m pumped to hear about all that!
I’m planning to bring along a hardtail & full suspension XC MTB’s! Really looking forward to hitting these MX tracks in the surrounding states too!
I have ONE MX track 10 mins from my house in Okla but the owner is such a raging douche, most everyone prefers to drive 1.5 to 2 hours to other tracks with proper management anyway, so it’s not gonna be any big deal to continue that habit with the cool bonus of riding new tracks for a change!
Some excellent/helpful info in this thread! 😎👍

Hi!

Having spent a year in FL and a handful of years in the Midwest, my next journey is taking me to NJ.
I was interested to find out what the riding is like up there.
What tracks are worth going to within a 3-4 hour driving distance from Tinton Falls?
How long is the riding season and where does everyone go in winter?

Cheers/ Fred

Hey guys!
This thread definitely strikes a chord with me too!
The wife and I are tentatively/potentially planning to travel out to northeastern Maryland for an extended summer stay with our son & his wife’s family and I was wondering about MX tracks in that region as well!

We’ll be staying with them in Port Deposit Md and I was planning to take the MX bike & a dual sport hoping to do some fun riding while there!
I know that’s in close proximity to Delaware, New Jersey & Pennsylvania and was hoping there was some good moto to be enjoyed!
And for what its worth, planning to bring the XC mountainbike and hoping there is some good singletrack cross country MTB riding within close proximity too?!

I’m looking forward to riding some new tracks and seeing some of the incredible historic sites in that part of the country!
There isn’t much history here in the land of the redneck (Oklahoma, my home state and where I’ve lived every day of my 56 years!) thats much older than the mid-late 1800/early 1900’s so I’m looking forward to seeing some of the colonial, pre-civil & civil war era history in that part of our country!
Vital insight is always good and always appreciated!
For the Mx side off things you probably want to look up masters Mx and Mdra your closest public tracks will be snake creek , Feild off dreams in nj , and Easton Mx , if you want to do a winter series there is a good one down south va ,top off nc 4-5 hr ride where you are staying geographically is good to travel from 15 mins in pa or Deleware and 30 mins to nj look up Ama district 6 it’s a lot cooler in the mountains in the summer and a lot off single track parks up there . Sounds like you like civil war stuff also you are about 1.5 hours to Gettysburg pa one off the biggest reenactment s every year 10 k plus croud bring water something every one in there life time should see and enjoys the bay / ocean while you are out here

Great info Jack mehoff! 🤪
I really appreciate all the excellent info here and I’m really looking forward to making it out this summer!
Once I get out and get situated I’ll definitely be checking out these MX & MTB opportunities!
I’ll definitely want to try and meet up with some fellow VitalMX’ers and do some riding too!
It’s looking like its gonna be a great summer!

That’s a shame. I’ve been out of that scene for a little and can remember lining up between phill, barcia, Lawrence. The list goes on and on. Every single weekend was like a regional qualifier.

Hahaha yeah she will finish her veterinary radiation oncology specialty degree in July, something she has studied 15 years for and will make 2.5 times as much as I do so I figured her say would weigh a tad more than mine. NJ came back with the best offer and the hospital staff and owners were terrific.

Having scanned the house market and available rentals I do get a bit sad. Everything seems so dated and over priced. Most places seemed to have increased in value by about 200 grand since 2020.
I need a garage which limits the rental options.
We were pondering on doing a fully furnished winter rental just to get an idea of an area we like before we buy but that might be unrealistic.

Same boat wife makes 2X me and works out of NYC a couple of days a week which is why we live in NJ. The state is far from perfect but for MTB and MX it's better than you think.

For housing, good luck. We bought our house a year and half ago and it was really hard to even when an offer for a house let alone find one where you want and within your budget. Since we bought our house the value has increased $80K or so which is crazy.

Doubt Englishtown is closing, but it's not what it used to be. They still do a good job with prep, and the track is fun, but the dirt and layout is not as good as it was at the old location. Add in that they break up practice into 5 classes, so you really only get to ride 10 minutes on the hour, and I don't go there much.

I live near Pagoda MX in PA and we help Etown and FOD during some of their races and when D6 races there. Rich from Etown was saying outsiders want that whole Etown property bad.

Its not a track issue, its a property and development thing. Outsiders want the property that the complex sits on.

I live about an hour from both and 9 out of 10 times I drive 3.5 hours to budds or tomahawk instead.

Nj tracks make the waits between motos so insanely long. And you’re out there for 10-12 minutes.
