ET3's bike almost blow up?

they commented that it was dumping smoke in the last couple of laps....and then he wins, and does his burnout and the hose let go on the right side and was throwing smoke. I thought for sure it was going to POP.

One more lap and he might have been pushing it back to the pits.

Nah, he had until it ran out of coolant and then a couple of laps at least. I think he could have done 7-10 more minutes. The burnout obviously exasperated the overheating.

My buddy said his radiators were all packed with sand and dirt. Anyone got a picture of that?

Steam not smoke. Hose didn’t let go, the engine was hot and venting excess pressure. As long as there was steam, engine was fine.

That's the vent hose, where steam/coolant are vented. It's routed down to the bottom of the frame from the radiator.

Well, all we know is that Eli finally made the YZ smoke/steam in a race.

They are probably a little disappointed because they thought this wouldn't happen...they even talked about how Eli was having no clutch overheat issues on the bike.

Could have been sand in the radiators...Eli did get blasted a lot in that race. Look at his goggles and front number plate at the end.

But it shows he can and will make any bike smoke.

It's like there's a cap on the radiator that has a pressure rated spring seal that when the pressure reaches a certain point the excess is vented through a dedicated tube to keep the seals/gaskets on the engine from blowing out!

I would bet this is what happened. He was following Webb through the sand every time. It seemed like it got better after he got passed Webb and some of the sand probably fell off.

I recall Dylan having at least one moto last year outdoors where the bike was steaming. Maybe Star/Yamaha will have to add some additional cooling to the 450’s. Still, in my opinion a testament to the base durability built into Yamaha engines. They have two of the most aggressive riders hammering the piss out of the bikes and still winning and contending for championships…

They probably could have let the bike cool off, topped off the fluids and run another race no problem.

The hose didn’t “let go”, thats the overflow/vent hose and it’s doing what it’s supposed to do.

Such a badass scene. Getting #6 while coming from behind and making his factory YZ blow steam like a rocket ship and smoking the rear for the fans... so sick. That bike shoulda been unwashed and kept as is on display either at Daytona or at Tomac's house.

Modern 4 strokes are much more durable and can take way more abuse than 2T designs so I can see why you would think it was about to give up

I’m sure those radiators were filled with sand, creating a strain on the cooling system… good on Yamaha for holding up for the Win! A blown engine late in the race would have sucked….great racing!

But there are some truths..

*We havent yet this year seen a Kawasaki 'steaming' (Apart from the obvious loose rad cap issue- human error)
*AC9 never experienced the 'steaming greenie' issue.
*We've never as I recall seen a steaming blue bike. (In 'normal' track conditions)
*We've now seen Eli's blue bike steaming.
*Eli will admit he is hard on the clutch & Clutch abuse = heat generation.

What you said is very fair.

Not sure if you guys noticed, but he had that bike wide open a lot when he was behind Coop. I wasn’t surprised to see it steaming after that and him being sand blasted for as long as he was. It cleaned up a lot after he got into the lead

2nd moto Southwick. His bike was smoking like 5 minutes into the race.
