Please don’t misunderstand this topic. I’m just looking for a conversation. Carmichael has 9 LL championships. Reynolds has 9 LL championships. It’s so unfortunate how injuries affect a career. How does one guy have so few injuries and another can’t catch a break? Is it luck? Is it chance? What is it?

I know it’s way to early to know how Reynolds career ends up but that’s just an example. AC would be another example.

Some guys ride over their heads some don’t. Some guys make lots of saves (RC). Some guys roll like a ball when they crash (RC). I think RC only had the one ACL where he just landed from a jump without crashing. luck plays a part. Robbie Reynard could never not be injured.

It’s probably luck, bikes are faster too has A lot to do with it. At the pro level it’s the little that make or break a guy.

Look at herlings and gaiser. Gaiser can crash every week an rarely gets injured. Herlings can fall over in a rut an breaks a bone and out for 2 months.

Amateur results mean nothing once you get to the big game.

Facts. And than you got kids like Jett who was a nobody until he did 1 Loretta Lynn’s event and was off grid prior.

Or Dungey and RV2 who had riders take a lot of the glory through the amateur ranks

I mean Jett won the 65 world championship, had good showings on 85 and then won a EMX250 round at 14. People that follow international racing knew that he had huge talent. He was just overshadowed by Hunter since he was just the “little brother”.
In the US it’s easy to over hype kids with all the Instagram bangers!

RC was one of the toughest guys to ever sling a leg over a dirt bike. He bounced down the track several times during his career ,he was even landed on .He always got back up. I believe his knee injury wasnt crash related.
I hope Reynolds makes quick recovery, that leads to a long and prosperous career.

Don't take this the wrong way, but....

RC entered the pros against a crop of hard-partying Lake Havasu potheads who could run exactly one mile. OK, I'm exaggerating, but you know what I mean. That hasn't been the case ever since.

Sorry, I don't agree with the fitness statement.
If the old school riders fitness was so bad. How were they able to compete against the Euros so well at the MX des nations and USGP,s?
I just think Ricky was just one step above others in rider ability.

I have a little insight into that situation, I know them a bit.

He is a smaller kid, and went way to fast on a 250 way to early, he just didn’t have the body or strength to go that fast, and crashed a lot.

I think kids like Ferry who come off of super minis onto 125s will be much better off.

I still think that he will be a threat, eventually, but he needs to heal and get himself stronger. The problem with this, is that the factories don’t alway do what is best for the riders, and when a kid is getting 300k to ride amateurs, the team wants him to move up.

Jeffro would race 2 35mins motos in 100+ deg and all black gear. I don't think that qualifies as a pot head. More like the very best athlete in world at the time. A bit of toke doesnt mean party animal.

The thing about Jett is that hes not been 100 percent healthy in along time and most people dont really know how serious some of his injuries have been... Last year at Lorettas he was racing with a broken hand ..then its his pelvis and now his wrist again ..Jett would be way better off if he could just stay away from racing and riding for the rest of this year just to get his body completely healed up and his head strait .He is easily capable of having a great career but thats not going to happen if he keeps coming back so quickly ..Not to mention the pressure that hes under .Im not 100 percent sure but i have heard his contract is up at the end of the year also and if thats true that just adds to the pressure...Like i said I think he would be way better off to stay away and get 100 percent healthy and come back and be the old Jett .

The build of racers bodies has probably changed as well, muscle mass helps with injury prevention, but muscle weight will slow you down. Im not saying Ricky was jacked but I would imagine Jett is probably running pretty lean to get the best power to weight.

A degree of luck, a degree of being better built. But the real reason, as stated near the top of this thread, is that the greats (anyone with a major championship and certainly multiple), are able to go fast without riding over their heads. Ezra Lusk etc could match Jeremy on speed, but usually only at the expense of increased risk. Over a long season (sometimes just a handful of races) it just doesn't pan out.

To explain why some riders have this feeling and others don't (or have it less) requires one to enter into the vagaries of the metaphysical...

I'm currently learning to play the piano. Take myself and Mozart as kids (assuming I was born in the 18th century), give us the same attention, hell, give me way more - the best teachers, complete dedication etc. All and everything you can think of. Mozart's still going to end up the genius pianist he was. I will end up a good pianist but vastly limited in comparison.

MX, as per any other sport or skill, is no different. Chad's right when he says champions are born.

I wonder if it has a little bit to do with the body structure required to race at the highest level. Those guys are tiny and maybe they have to try and stay tiny. Is their bone mass not dense enough? Do they not have enough muscular padding to prevent injuries in a crash? What does staying so fir for so long do to their bodies when it starts so young?

I don’t know what I’m talking about……and full of shit (preemptive strike)

It's lean muscle mass. They are still very strong, but power to weight matters and tremendous flexibility is important. This helps them riding and injury prevention. The gym work they do is rowdy, but it isn't "maxing out" with weight, rather a lot of 8-12 rep sets and balance related along with explosive movements.

I agree with you. Plus saying the old school guys is way off base as RJ, Ward, Stanton, Bailey, O’Mara were ridiculously in shape. RC learned from O’Mara who coached him early on. Emig admits he was partying too much but he was all done when RC went into the 250 class. No one has ever won outdoors and not trained hard. SX you can get by without training real hard. When MC got serious outdoors and won a title and whooped everyone at the des Nations, he went and got himself way in shape. Two years earlier I saw Henry lap him at Southwick in the 125 class both motos.

But, a pot-head, that's 'towelie' right? If you puff a bit, that's not a 'pot-head'. Having a drink every so often doesn't mean you are a 'drunk'.

luck plays a role in everyones lives..its called probabilities

i am a big RC fan and he is one of the, if not the hardest working MX racer who ever lived who was also immensely talented but he had very, very good luck as well.
