How do you get parts and gear?

Do the majority of moto enthusiasts shop on the major sites and local dealers and pay MSRP less the random sale/black Friday? Are most of you hooked up with a "parts guy" who is selling stuff a little above cost? Is there a better way to get parts than just paying up for whatever you need? I miss the days of good coupon codes and now everything is pretty locked in, the only draw is customer service and your sticker of choice (usually).

I support my local dealer as much as possible and only use the online guys when local doesn’t have it/can’t get it soon enough. I’ve purchased parts/accessories and bikes from them for going on 10+ years now and they take care of me. I get about 15-20% off anything at the parts counter and I usually get some nice swag with bike purchases. But it wasn’t always like that, it was years of paying msrp and developing a good relationship to get treated well.

Had an insider that got me 50% off FXR, but he has since retired. Back to avg Joe pricing..

Last place I would go is the local dealer.

Well, the question is, did you even come out ahead or did you pay yesterday for today's prices? Of course, this doesn't matter if it is just a loving gesture to support your local industry. We don't have much here so I order everything anyways \:

Rocky Mountain for me. They have never done me wrong.
Ordered with them not long ago, they sent me junk and wanted to make the refund impossible so I won't use them unless it's a big savings. Revzilla and motosport are my go-to.

I pay the same or less than what Motosport costs. Depends on the item and how much markup is in it, especially once online retailers started having to charge sales tax, that really bridged that gap on savings.

For most of my life, had a deal with the local dealership. North County Yamaha, mostly. I was racing the B class back then, and the deal was pretty good, I think it was dealer cost + 5 percent.

Now, I have a small deal with Motosport.com, and I only go to the dealer to get new bikes.

Whatever you do, just be loyal to a place, develop a relationship, and it will work out for both you and the company. A local dealer will give you 20 percent off if you are spending thousands there a year.

Last time I went to local dealer, the parts guy didn’t have the oil I wanted, then shit talked Suzuki over and over again. I said well they’re getting E start and new rear shock, lighter weight. “THEYRE GONNA NEED MORE THAN THAT.”

Like dude, I’m a consumer, if I like Suzuki, you should like Suzuki too, just saying, so that I spend my money there. Dude wasn’t moto at all, asked me what bike Eli Tomac rode and I said Yamaha and he was confused but realized I knew my shit.

I just hate that the guy was trying to act all cool and like he knew his shit when he didn’t. Plus I wanted to look around at the gear and stuff they had for sale IN PEACE, but nope he followed me around making small talk and trying to “win” his little Suzuki sucks argument. So annoying. I’ll never go to that fucking place again. They can change my god damn tires though. Here’s my rim and tire I bought from EBay or Motosport, change it for $30 since you wanna be assholes.

Used to be a tech at a small independent shop, cost +10% on anything we could get from tucker, parts, wps. But the best was the “buddy deals” from the reps, make friends with the reps and that’s where you can get the big deals. But now I’m just a regular guy and get all my stuff from RMATV, they usually have the best prices and the shipping is always quick for me.

I am fortunate enough to still have connections. While I do not get any of the same deals that I used to (don't race much anymore,) I still get lots of products distributor-direct.

I bought a set of wheel and tires from a local dealership a few years ago(2019), paid full price for them, and that is Ok. Local dealer just trying to make their money. I understand. What I didnt appreciate was when I asked if they could just mount the tires really quick when I picked them up. The guy said sure!

I assumed(my bad, I know) that they would charge me $25-30 per wheel to mount the tire, but NO, they charged me a full labor hour per tire! I ended up having to pay $200 for them to mount 2 tires.........

That was the last time I spent a dollar at a local dealer.

Every goober ever thinks it’s like inside jargon to hate Suzuki’s when it’s not. It’s just stupid and astroturfing is even lamer. I also don’t care if it ever gets an electric start. Can’t remember the last time my YZ250 had a dead battery and I couldn’t ride. Also don’t like dealerships for this, plus the prices are usually kinda bad. R3 motoworx is the only “dealer” I’ve been to that had good stuff and good prices.

Like most things, gear and parts are based on the simple criteria of, "what do you have more of, time or money". And like most local shops, they're lacking in both. The one thing that has always puzzled me with the Ma & Pa's is why don't they promote more consignment sales with bikes. I'm sure space is the major reason, but with local shops traffic is what generates sales. Just my 2¢

If I have to buy something new I’m going to Ebay first. Same price or less than websites/ dealer and generally free shipping

I’m a college student so to stay riding a fair amount is still on my parents dime so I hustle pretty hard sending out sponsorship resumes and it’s worked out pretty good for me where I get 90% of my stuff at a deal. The rest I usually go to eBay or in a pinch I have a really good local parts shop about 20 minutes down the road I hit up. For oem parts though it’s usually rmatvmc but I can get oem stuff at dealer pricing, but for the majority of the stuff rmatvmc oem prices are cheaper than what the dealer pays for most oem stuff.

To be fair I also can't remember the last time either of my e-start CRFs had a dead battery and I couldn't ride Wink

I cannot understand why dealers don’t stock common wear items. I have tried too many times to get parts you would think they would have just for them to say they can order them for more than I can directly.

I have gone into dealers looking for things like sprockets, chain guides, brake pads, levers and other items that they will absolutely sell if they had in stock, but they never have them. I typically just look online first now, it just sucks when you need something with short notice and are willing to pay a premium.

This also shocks me. Riva Motorsports down south stocks alot of stuff, or at least they used to. Levers, pads, bars, all fluids. you name it.

I get parts from a mix of local dealer and RMATVMC (usually) depending on what it is. Gear (pants, jersey) I used to buy from Alias, to good a deal, or from eBay slightly used and a year old or so and therefore 1/4 of the price, I’m 52 and am not in a fashion competition. Boots and helmet from local dealer so I can try them on.

Can you drive to Chaparral?
2/2/2022 4:24pm
Pretty much everything gets bought from RM. My go to dealer is about over an hour drive from me and my preferred shop is completely across town from where I work and the opposite way of home. Unfortunately my only day to go to a shop would be Saturday and that’s filled with family stuff and house/yard work so I never get a chance to go by there. The owner is a fellow Vitard that pops in here often and someone I’ve known since high school. FactoryMX for anyone local.

I get my KTM/Husky/GasGas bikes &’parts at Fator’s (they’re Suzuki, too) in Redding, CA and sometimes at AEO PowerSports in Temecula.
Hondas & Honda parts at Donnell’s Motorcycles in Independence, MO (also Suzuki & Beta).
Kawasakis & Kawi parts at Lee’s Honda Kawasaki Polaris Beta in Redding.

I have “no such complaints” as those of you that have dealers that don’t stock what’cha need. Fator’s and Donnell’s…these shops are owned and operated by Bad Ass Off-Roaders! Lee’s is run Moto-family-types that have been selling me bikes, just like Fator’s has, since the 90s (when I moved to Redding).
AEO Has there own SX/MX TEAM.

Donnell’s? Met the owner at St Louis or ATL SX…some years ago…Vital member, too…btw. Made me a deal on a new Honda 450 in DECEMBER of 2020…remember trying to FIND dirt bikes back then…?

Fator’s sold me a MINT 2007 RM125 around that same time for $3500 and this thing was BETTER than new with over $2K in new aftermarket “very hard to get goodies”. Recently picked up a GasGas 300 at Fator’s, too.

Lee’s sold me the 1st 2022 KLR650 Adventure they got and gave me A DEAL on it! (People we’re paying mark-up on them all over the web/on forums). I went back and bought another as a Buddy Bike.

EVERYONE of these dealers gave me some great deals and excellent service DURING THIS COVID DEBACLE…
All of them.
Deals on “very hard to get bikes”.
OEM PARTS IN STOCK when most dealers and even RMATVMC didn’t have’em (yes, I get some stuff there, too!)
Hell, AEO had KTM 450 Complete Gasket Kits when NO ONE-else did (I bought 2…”just in case”/the spare kit is in my race-day parts box…someone will need it!)

My dealers are run by great people and they ALL ride.

I dig all of them.

I support our local dealer, the same shop my dad did most his dealings with through the 90s and on. They treat me amazingly well, I have no doubt they would let me take a new bike off the showroom floor and race it next day with out paying, if I promised to come back and pay for it in a reasonable amount of time. (To me that would be 30 days or less)

Also very fortunate that they (and other shops around here) do a great job at stocking parts. I'm talking thousands of oem and aftermarket parts in stock for the brands they sell, and a super knowledgeable staff that you can bs with when buying parts, watch sx with them on a Saturday and ride together on Sunday. Same with gear, there is a ton of options there, multiple brands ect. Just estimating from when I was there today, maybe 100+ sets of gear from the major brands, and a ton of boots/helmets ect too.

I think it's a shame when I hear that others don't have shops like that close to them, but it also makes me realize how fortunate I am to have a shop like that close to home. I picked up a new 350 and 300 recently, they treated me good as always. But I love brick and mortar shops and want them to make money.
