This angle they are trying out is so trash compared to the chin/mouthpiece angle. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5EiYUd3S6s

Is it possible a breakaway mount made for a helmet mouthpiece is ever allowed? Or how about a helmet company making a helmet option with built in mount that is ' certified ' ? Sucks to not have a good first person perspective, and I don't see how a solution would be that complicated while still prioritizing rider safety.

It makes me nauseous. Bring back the helmet cam.

If I remember correctly, KTM Group said no helmet mounted cameras on any of their riders, so it’s not a Feld thing.

Its an AMA rule now. No additions to helmets in AMA sanctioned events. Last year it was just amateur races, I reckon due to contract obligations to GoPro in pro events.

I guess they just can’t risk the chance of the camera being pushed into the helmet from a crash. A break away mount or building the camera into the helmet doesn’t circumvent the issue.

The adhesive will break before the camera goes into the helmet. Has there ever been a case where someone was injured by a gopro on the top of their helmet?

I believe it was Brian Moreaus incident that made the TLD team change their own mount position, whether that also influenced the AMAs decision to change the rule I'm not sure but I believe they thought the GoPro might have worsened Brians crash and therefore contributed to his injuries in some way

Maybe chest mount? It may end up over some sponsors, but you could always put graphics/stickers on it?

Is that really the rule though???

Why is Carson Mumford allowed to affix half a pool noodle to his helmet and has now been permitted to race 2 pro AMA events?

Seems to me the powers-at-be only enforce the rule when it favors them. Minimize the amount and quality of GoPro footage available to control the media.....ban riders from wearing helmet mounts. A rider attaches something to the helmet that is not related to capturing footage.....no big deal, have a good race sir!

Enforce the rules consistently.

If foreign objects are not allowed to be attached to the helmet, per the "GoPro Rule", then Mumford should not be allowed to have the neck roll on his helmet.

The footage is garbage from that angle. If I see more of it, it will make me purchase a different brand of camera. (Not logical, I know, but that's how marketing gets measured.) Come up with something better, GoPro and Feld.

If you land directly on the camera it could push it into the helmet, regardless of how it’s mounted to the helmet

My favorite angle is , and will always be " Under the visor ". It's literally what these guys are seeing on the track. I don't buy into the "It's not safe " being on a helmet in that position.

Agreed, this position is shite!
If you didnt see so much of the fender it would be better. I wonder if it can be placed higher up, maybe up in front of the bar pad? And angled up just a touch.

Yeah it's crap. Is Gopro still a sponsor of the series?
1/16/2022 11:35pm
I don't mind it, it showcases how fast these guys are going a lot more I feel like the helmet ones make it feel slower but yeah the angle kinda sucks.

Agreed, it sucks. Isn't that the GoPro Session? Too bad they can't just get the lens of the new GoPro in that hole because I'm pretty sure the new one has that self leveling function..so it wouldn't be as nauseating. I could be totally wrong, but just a thought.

You can 'thank' Brian Moreau. You know, the kid with a bright future whom had a horrible crash in his first SX race and is still fighting for a life without a wheelchair and his inner demons as a consequence of that awful night. Man, can't people think before they say something? I think that GoPro as a listed company with 1,63 billion dollars can invent something in the near future.

It’s not a horrible view. Much better than chest mount in my opinion.

Only way it is going to happen is with combination of helmet with super thin outer shell (some helmet brands still believe it is the way to go) and extremely bad luck. Back in 2017 we tested this by dropping a car battery straight to helmet mounted GoPro, but despite multiply tries it always just sheared off.

Meanwhile the track is littered with rebar, rocks, other bikes you can fall on. Heck Sexton almost decapitated Kenny, but that's ok. Pretty sure if the rider is fine with it, let them run it.

This, it really is the best angle. I mount mine the same as well.

I miss watching it because you could see how the rider is moving on the bike.

All these years I thought video games had the sound and camera angles totally unrealistic. Turns out they had it right all along! That mounting spot SUCKS. Bike sounds like a chainsaw.

You know it has happened before right? I’d say your little battery test was a fail.

I don’t agree with the rule, I still wear a go pro from time to time, but in this day and age someone is always looking to sue someone when bad luck happens.
