2006 Cr250 and 2000 Yz250. The Cr250 was the fastest 2 stroke I ever rode. It had great ergonomics and the engine would scream once up in the revs. However, it was a little sleepy off idle. For my type of woods riding, the yz has the better all around motor. So , that's the one I still have. Both great bikes though.

If you have a non yz250 from this 02-07 date range, you have a window into another time and own a small piece of moto history. Take care of those bikes, lots of important bits NLA. Somehow the YZ250 survives as a living fossil and still kicks ass (alibet with some updates) based on its form it reached in the mid 2000s.

02-04 cr250 was pretty solid. Suspension stock was unpredictable at times it would pogo stick you sideways huck a bucks. Kayaba is superior to the showa in that era of 250s anyways. 05-07 cr250 engine is smoother and doesnt fall off the pipe at all. I found fitting a 51 sprocket made bottom end real nice. Might need to grind chain guard a bit tho haha

things to help the case reed cr250 motor

--kehin pwk or lectron carb (some say the JD jetting kits work too)

--keeping the powervalve cables adjusted/fresh

-i believe some would use the airboot off the 05-07 on the older motors and it would help..i never did it personally but hopefully some else can chime in

--getting the head milled to fix the squish band

--using the older, heavier 00-01 crank or using an 05+ crank as the lobes were solid metal and i believe the 02-03 had some sort of plating/plates on them that could shear off

--extreme fix: using an 94-01 motor in the newer generation frame ..you can get custom made headstays and kits on ebay to do this

the good thing about hondas is you can interchange parts from most years and build the "perfect" bike.

you can fix the motor and use the forks off the 04+ or a newer crf (or use the kyb stuff off the 125) or swap in an 01 motor.

if the cr250 had the older motor or if honda had properly developed the case reed motor it would have won shootouts as the ergonomics and suspension are awesome and still good to this day. the stock suspension was very good.

if OP wants a project bike and doesnt mind fiddling around with setting a bike up to fix its flaws the CR250 is hard to beat

i lowered the cylinder and corrected the squish, jetted the mikuni properly and got a 51 sprocket on the back.

with that setup 3rd gear revved out really quick, so i installed a 10 oz or so steahly flywheel. man that bike was sweet.

Dude so spot on! And I honestly think these last gen bikes are advanced enough to not hold anyone back on any track long as the suspension is dialed

My '06 YZ250 is the finest motocross bike ever made. Great suspension, solid, usable power, passable brakes, predictable handling. And it braaaps.
EDIT: (Well, I suppose evey model since then is pretty good, too.)

Well, I only have a little first hand experience, but I just finished building my '03 YZ250
and as a proud papa, just thought this would be a good thread to show it off. Laughing
Tom Morgan big bore, WPC treated tranny, 49mm Showa conventionals, and other stuff.
Hope to finally ride it tomorrow! Smile

I will say, though, that I wanted a steel frame as I recall when I rode them back when, the aluminum frame just felt a little rigid and I want a little more cush at my age.

Had the same bike did close to the same mods but a little further lowered the crankcase volume modified V Force Reed cage rifled carburetor bike was a complete rocket ship sold it because parts were becoming hard to come by! Just bought a 22 KTM 250 had to do a lot of work to it just to get it faster than the Honda LOL chassis is nowhere near as close but we're getting there after a spring conversion in the front!

We grenaded a third gear lost the right side crankcase had 2 eBay an entire motor because nothing was available .Since then oem pistons and radiators are not available. Was also trying to reframe it because they stretch losing a little bit of handling!

Owned an 08 RM250 for 13 years, had 2 over that time - Great bikes, fantastic chassis that is nimble and just 'feels right' to me, responsive yet solid. Head shake is just from poor set up, easily cured with good chassis balance and spring rates. I never get head shake. Motor is great, fast and responsive, strong but not unrideable. Good jetting, a little flywheel weight and OEM length silencer helps make it more manageable. Reliability is good but they dont wear amazingly well. Gearboxes work well but aren't overly reliable and have had issues in the past. My current RM250 has around 50 hours on it but I don't want to hammer it too hard now due to rising running costs and it's the last of its kind.

YZ250 - Solid, reliable, great suspension which gives a nice active feel, aluminium frame but still very compliant. Good reliability, but feels a little chunky. Does take a bit of getting used to the 'feel'. But generally a great bike, I really like how broad and useable the motors are on them.

CR250 - Great build quality and general feel. Ride quality is nice but the motor is odd in stock form, however easily fixed with all the well known and talked about mods. Major negative about the CR's now is the extremely high purchase costs, however it seems likely the price will hold or continue to increase.

Unfortunately ive never ridden a KX250!

My 06 I built and owned for a year or two. It was fast but the bike felt like it wanted to slam me, too nervous feeling even with the 23mm offset clamps.

Had a similiar experience with a CR & SX. In the summer of 17 I was looking to upgrade my old but trusty 03 CR250r to a 250 SX or TC model. Had read & heard all the raves about the the new Euro 2 t's so I decided to go buy one. After test riding them I came away disappointed & wondering what all the hype was about. Although the SX was much better than the previous models ridden I felt it still wasn't up to par with the CR. The air foks IMHO holds it back as well as the TC model.
Even though they both have case reed engines the euro bikes signed off much sooner up top. I ended up keeping the 03 CR & still have it. Unless they get rid of the air forks on the Euro Bikes I'm staying on the Japanese brand. I don't see a need to change since I don't see it as an upgrade.

Been fortunate to have owned or ridden many 250 2t's dating back to the mid - late 80's. My personal favorites have been an 03 & 07 CR250r's. Exceptional chassis with a very good balance that is stable & turns extremely well. the 03 engine was done by PC & the 07 was done by Chad Watts. Both suspensions are done by FC with the 03 having an 07 Showa B-kit. Both engines have a healthy off idle to a phenomenal mid-top overrev unmatched by any other 250 2t ridden.

Would like to hear more about the Chad Watts 07. He also does a frame modification. Do you know anything about that ? Hrc pv adjustment on yt is for cr250,s. I set my 04 cr125 with that I used a socket with tape around it to fit perfectly in the exhaust port instead of a paint stick. I also adjusted it on the loose side to get it opened quicker to get into the upper mid quicker. coils are cheap a new coil makes a difference. IKat works great on a 04 125 I would think the 250 would also.

Here is my '03 that I sold last summer and will probably regret! It was a progressive project over four year span, and enjoyed riding/racing it. Razor sharp steering, great suspension and crazy powerful brakes...it was one of the best handling dirt bike I have ever owned! There are many that bag on the RC valve engine, but they put out plenty of HP that comes on in the mid-range with great top end rev. Pure MX engine, and not a torquey woods bike for sure. The only negative was like any 2-stroke...to make max power you had to play with jetting to keep it crisp when it gets hot and humid.

Suspension - Front: '06 forks with DCL coated lowers, anodized upper tubs and lugs. Factory Connection springs and re-valve. Rear: '05 CRF swingarm with stock '03 linkage. Shock had DCL coated shaft and Factory Connection Spring and re-valve. Triple Clamps: Ride Engineering 20mm offset and ProTaper bars.

Engine- FMF fatty pipe with shorty silencer. 38mm Keihin PWK Air Striker Carb with Boyesen RadValve. 13/49 gearing (13/48 stock).

Brakes: Front: 270mm MOTOstuff oversize blade rotor, braided stainless steel brake hose. Rear: Blade type brake rotor

I've heard about the frame modification, but he only built the engine for this bike. I believe the mod is supposed to help in the whoops from what I recall. Honestly at my level neither bike holds me back & feel I'm the weak link as I can't ride either bike to its full potential. Yup. The powervalves are set per the HRC specs..
I remember hearing about the ICat back in 04 going off memory. It was designed to help with the spark advance of the plug. What I found out worked really good was a JD ign.. The 03 has a programmed map by PC to compliment the cyl. & head mods.. The 07 has 2 maps programmed by JD the manufacturer in Italy. There is a noticeable difference from oem to the aftermarket ignitions. The low rpm range is enhanced with the mid being slightly better & the most noticeable being the topend overrev.

There’s nothing quite like the nostalgia of last gen Japanese two strokes.

2008 RM250 is an absolute blast to ride. Currently running '98 conventional forks and they are very, very good.

Just picked up a basket case 1994 KX250 and have some neat things planned for it. Updated front suspension, TMR big bore and a thorough going-thru. Hope to have it on track come fall!

Wow. This bike is perfect. Exactly what I have my eyes on doing this year. IMO the Stewart SR 250 is one of the best looking bikes from this era.
