Edit* RC doesn’t quad but does the same thing as stew. It looks a little sketchier on Saturday?

Slight topic change; those throwback yellow YZs Reed and DV were riding that year looked so freaking cool.

Terrible analogy. Two strokes are no longer “modern”. In 2005, they were. James’ KX was fast. He’s not pulling these kind of starts if he’s on something that slow. Was he at a disadvantage? For sure. 18 seconds of a disadvantage? No.

A 2022 KTM husky or Gas Gas for that matter 250 two stroke is as modern as they come in regards to two strokes. Much much better than what was available in 2005. You still wouldn’t be able to hold a candle to a modern 450. I don’t think anyone on a 2005 KX250 would be able to hang with a 2005 CRF450r. Just simple math.

How much more did the 05 450 weigh over the 05 250? idk..
we must include that in our equation..

True. But that heavier weight disadvantage with more horsepower just means more power to the ground in my eyes.

Before fuel pumps and electric start 450's were actually pretty light. I bet RC's 04 Honda was close to a 250 in weight. Copper is heavy...

You’re right. JS should’ve been beating everyone no problem on that bike. He just isn’t that good.

Think about that haha. As fast as James looks there, RC was yarding him everywhere else

Can’t blame giving up an 18 second gap entirely on the bike.
If James had had an equal bike RC wouldn’t have seen him that day.

Even though it looks like RC was catching him, he must have gained 1sec alone in that section.

while he had a better line, with the long big hills his 250 was getting eaten up. at one point in the race he was 13+ on RC and got caught

Put ET on a modern 2 stroke and Kenny on a modern four stroke. I bet Kenny wins by a little more than 18 seconds. Bike has tons to do with it. They race 250t against 250fs in Europe for a reason.
The competitive difference between a 250 2t and a 450 in 2005 was much much closer than now.

In 2005 the majority of pros were still choosing to ride two strokes in SX because they were lighter and sharper. Outdoors that slight edge was reversed in favour of the four stroke, mainly due to better tractability.

Move forward to 2021 and 450s have had another 16 years of development focus; lighter, efi and programable ignitions etc etc. 2t development in the same period? Not so much.

Yep, we used to camp out on the hill for the duration of the days motos. During practice we would stand against the fence on the hill leading up to that section and the amount of speed all those dudes would carry up it was mind boggling.

God damn I miss Stew. Grateful that I was able to watch him race in person so many times. Even though he lapped me the one time we lined up as kids. Laughing

450’s gained weight when they went EFI.

My man. Did you happen to see Ryan Hughes at Loretta Lynn's this year? A 1986 Honda CR250 against everything modern. I don't care if it had some 'trick' parts on it. It's still archaic compared to modern motorcycles, and he still served up an ass whoopin' on it.

Looks like he's lost some weight. I'm really glad he enjoyed himself after retiring and being a dad, but it is always cool to see people lose weight in general. Awesome to see him smilin.

in 2005 a 250 two stroke is no match for RC's 450. I love watching footage of Stew ride the crap out of that bike but at that level, especially RC, you need every advantage you can get. It's still amazing to think how many legends Stew was able to beat on his Kawasaki SR 250.

“In 20XX a _______ was no match for RC”. Any MX combo of year/bike/rider works…

So it's a better look to beat them to the punch by posting this nonsense? Good for you.

You can be a fan of Stewart AND RC, they respect the hell out of each other these days, so simmer down.
